dropping 7 spots for losing by 1 against a ranked opponent

It’s not just the loss to Iowa, it’s that Oklahoma and Western Michigan both looked horrendous this weekend, that makes Michigan’s resume look much worse.

u/Rockerblocker Michigan State Spartans • Great West 20d ago

There's nothing redeeming on their resume at all. Loss to WMU, struggled to beat a dog-shit Oklahoma, couldn't separate from UTEP until 3rd quarter, and then lost to Iowa. The voters that are still ranking them need to be investigated

A win over ISU and two shutout wins over G6 teams is astronomically better than Michigan's resume

u/Righteousrob1 Michigan Wolverines 20d ago

You can’t have your cake and eat it too. Either Michigan is a decent team and quality win. Or a shit team and Iowa should drop for barely beating them.

We've looked suspect all year so the first loss was always going to be a big drop. Ironic that it happened after a game against a ranked team where we looked like the better team but I can't say it's not fair given the four games worth of data we have. Other teams in the 20-25 range and some unranked teams have looked better overall.

u/fskier1 Michigan Wolverines • College Football Playoff 20d ago edited 20d ago

Yeah I don’t really get it, we were even the better team for most of the game

E: tbf I guess our best win keeps looking worse and worse

u/meyer_33_09 Michigan Wolverines • Miami (OH) RedHawks 20d ago

It makes complete sense if you just look at how mediocre we’ve been all year.

21

u/MostYolked Iowa Hawkeyes • Sweden National Team 20d ago

You don’t get a break for being the better team for most of the game. You lost at home.

13

u/DeadEye662 Michigan Wolverines 20d ago edited 20d ago

By 1 point. To a ranked team. Unless you’re trying to say your own team isn’t actually that good

0

u/pickrunner18 Ohio State Buckeyes 20d ago

Did you watch the game? Iowa isn’t actually that good.

Please Kirk, give my liver the strength to endure next week's hate watch. My body is ready and my heart is willing...

Edit: PAIN 😭

2

u/Righteousrob1 Michigan Wolverines 20d ago

So why do they go up in ranking? To help osu next week?

12

u/AssManKramerCosmo Michigan Wolverines • UCLA Bruins 20d ago

You’ll get downvoted because facts aren’t considered in this sub. However, you’re actually underselling it. Michigan was the FAR better team for the vast majority of the game.

14

u/Our-Gardian-Angel Wisconsin Badgers • Sickos 20d ago

Yes you were, but a loss is a loss just like the WMU win still counted as a win. And a home loss is always going to be dinged more. Plus your best win has lost all of its luster with how incompetent OU is looking.

4

u/TacticalDesire Michigan • Ferris State 20d ago

You can say a win is a win and a loss is a loss but that’s not how it’s been treated. We still dropped out of the poll after the WMU game.

The voters have been really punitive toward Michigan this year and a handful of other teams. The polls don’t matter right now and Michigan isn’t great but it’s clear the voting has been inconsistent at best.

17

u/Our-Gardian-Angel Wisconsin Badgers • Sickos 20d ago

I mean, yeah? Do you think you're the first team to be dinged in voters' minds because of an underwhelming performance? You were 27.5-point favorites who needed a Hail Mary under dubious circumstances to escape. It's going to still be held against you. You still got "credit" for the win by still getting some votes in the following week's AP poll and being the equivalent of 28th. No way that's the case with an actual loss.

In a vacuum, losing by 1 to Iowa on a last-second TD in a game where you guys looked like the better team shouldn't be that costly. But combine it with that horrid WMU performance and the OU win losing all its luster? Hard to argue that voters are being overly punative to Michigan. They've looked underwhelming and it's hard to make a case for them deserving to be ranked. They've gotten deserved treatment.

3

u/Breakfast-Burrito Michigan • San Diego State 20d ago

If what you are saying were true, Iowa shouldn’t have jumped 4 spots for beating us the same way we beat WMU.

2

u/Our-Gardian-Angel Wisconsin Badgers • Sickos 19d ago

I'm perfectly fine with the argument that Iowa rose more than they should have. But I don't really agree with the idea that Iowa's win and Michigan's win over WMU are all that equivalent other than last-second endings. A narrow escape on the road in a Big Ten game is just not fundamentally close to barely escaping at home as a 27.5-point favorite. They should not be treated the same.

2

u/Breakfast-Burrito Michigan • San Diego State 19d ago

You were making the case that Michigan has not had an impressive enough season to be ranked. What I am saying is that, if Michigan is not that good relative to Iowa, beating them by 1 point should drop them just like the WMU win dropped Michigan.

You’re relying a lot on pre-season gambling odds for a team who didn’t even play a snap with their new staff yet.

You got beat by a MAC school, barely beat a very bad Oklahoma team, and somehow managed to lose while still outperforming a mediocre Iowa team. Unranked seems pretty fair

6

u/DeadEye662 Michigan Wolverines 20d ago

Then explain why Iowa is ranked in the top 15 when they can barely squeeze past a below average Michigan team. You can’t. It makes no sense

8

u/TacticalDesire Michigan • Ferris State 20d ago

That goes against the hivemind circlejerk.

Using the same logic as the diatribe above, Iowa should have dropped for needing a last second TD to beat a struggling Michigan that team needs miracles to win and only beats other bad teams.

Michigan is a quality win for everyone that beats us, but Michigan isn’t allowed to have quality loss.

1

u/MrConceited California • Michigan 15d ago edited 15d ago

It highlights the bad process that the voters use. It was Michigan's best performance by far. This was a loss where I came out of it much more positive about the season than going into the game.

If ranking Michigan was appropriate after Oklahoma, it is appropriate now. If the idea is that Iowa is so bad that Michigan should be unranked as a result of that loss, then it was inexcusable to have them ranked after the Oklahoma win, and Iowa should be unranked now too.

Edit:

After week 1 I'd have set an over/under of 5 wins. After week 2, 5.5 wins. After week 4, 9 wins.

u/AssManKramerCosmo Michigan Wolverines • UCLA Bruins 20d ago

Agreed.

1

u/IrishMosaic Notre Dame • Michigan State 20d ago

Iowa not being good doesn’t mean Michigan should be ranked for almost beating them.

1

u/AssManKramerCosmo Michigan Wolverines • UCLA Bruins 20d ago

Agreed. I never said Michigan should be ranked. Michigan will have plenty of opportunities against good opponents throughout the season to prove they should be ranked.

6

u/Confident_Delay5805 LIU Sharks 20d ago

A loss is a loss. And they treated your “win” against WMU as a loss. And they don’t value your Oklahoma win that much anymore.

Michigan is a two loss team and Michigan's best win just got skull dragged by UGA. Michigan should not be ranked.

0

u/TacticalDesire Michigan • Ferris State 20d ago

There’s 5 maybe 8 teams in the entire country that UGA wouldn’t skull drag.

-6

u/KneeDeepInRagu Alabama • Middle Tennessee 20d ago

How many teams are there in the entire country that would lose at home to Western Michigan?

-14

u/perczerc 20d ago

u guys got a cheeky win against western michigan and then 2 weeks later lose to Iowa of all teams thats why

21

u/fskier1 Michigan Wolverines • College Football Playoff 20d ago

Idk what “Iowa of all teams” is supposed to mean when they are ranked top 15

14

u/MaximusStirner Michigan Wolverines • Cornell Big Red 20d ago

"You lost to the #14 ranked team in the country"

10

u/goofyskatelb1 20d ago

So then why is Iowa above Oregon? Surely Oregon’s big win over ranked USC should be valued higher than a 1 point win over terrible unranked Michigan

8

u/StrangelyOnPoint Michigan • Grand Valley State 20d ago

Michigan is a quality win for whoever beats them

But Michigan is never allowed to have a quality loss

5

u/TacticalDesire Michigan • Ferris State 20d ago

Also if Michigan beat them, they weren’t a good team.

-8

u/RosstaMSU Michigan State Spartans 20d ago edited 19d ago

Plus, the 1 “quality win” against Oklahoma doesn’t look so great anymore

Edit: lol at all the downvotes for me stating the obvious truth. Oh Michigan fans, never change.
