No better way to inaugurate a stadium than running through Penn State's ass like shit through a tin horn.

Is 365 the largest rushing yards difference between two teams on the season? Maybe decade? It sounds like a record that could be 60 years old or 60 days old, I have no idea.

Edit: According to Google AI Overview (which I obviously trust fully, it would never lie to me) the record is 696 in a 1988 game between Oklahoma and Kansas State

Houston was coached by Major Applewhite, and he was fired after that loss.

5

u/Alone_Advantage_961 Maryland • Notre Dame 14d ago

Wasnt this game a mutiny by the team on him?

3

u/Mother_Frame6669 14d ago

Applewhite never had control of that 2018 team. Ed Oliver belittling him on the sideline during their win over Tulane was just the canary in the coal mine.

What a beautiful game that was. Triple Option executed to perfection!

2015 bowl game between BU and UNC. Baylor outrushed UNC 651 to 244. First one that came to my mind.

1

u/QB1- Texas A&M Aggies • Baylor Bears 14d ago

Baylor went through like 6 QBs that season and started a WR at QB in the bowl. They absolutely steamrolled through UNCs D that game. 84 rushing attempts.

33

u/theexile14 Pittsburgh • Notre Dame 14d ago

Paul Johnson must have had some game like that, but that would have been a decade ago or more I guess.

8

u/ATL2AKLoneway Georgia Tech • Canterbury (NZ) 14d ago

Georgia Tech could never produce a defense that good to pair with his offenses. Because for some reason, great defense and having to take calculus just don't mix at all.

4

u/FastPerformer4240 Michigan State Spartans 14d ago

That's very strange to me - I had to take through Calc 4 I got very good at slamming my head into a wall.

3

u/BoogerSugarSovereign Indiana Hoosiers • College Football Playoff 14d ago

It feels like the triple option would help a defense perform because it boosts time of possession so the defense can get more rest from series to series

5

u/badgerfan650 Wisconsin Badgers • Stanford Cardinal 14d ago

I’d like to give a shoutout to Wisconsin rushing for 581 against #16 Nebraska in 2014, they had 118. Can’t remember the exact stats but they had something like a top 15 rushing d going into the game. Melvin would have gone for that alone if he played the 4th.

According to Gemini for all time:

  • 1. Oklahoma vs. Kansas State (1988) — [+696 yards]
    • Sooners rushed for 768 yards (NCAA FBS record) to K-State's 72 yards.
  • 2. Oklahoma vs. Kansas State (1971) — [~+671 yards]
    • Oklahoma ran for 711 yards on the ground behind their famous Wishbone offense while holding Kansas State to roughly 40 yards.
  • 3. Rice vs. Louisiana Tech (2003) — [+609 yards]
    • Rice ran for 672 yards on the ground while limiting La Tech to just 63 rushing yards.
  • 4. Georgia Tech vs. Cumberland (1916) — [+529 yards]
    • In the infamous 222–0 game, GT ran for 501 yards while holding Cumberland to -28 yards.
  • 5. Nebraska vs. Iowa State (1988) — [+501 yards]
    • Nebraska's Option attack rushed for 604 yards while holding Iowa State to 103 rushing yards.

From what else I could find, it seems like the most recent example is:

Air Force vs. Northern Iowa (2022) — [+463 Yards]

  • Rush Yards: Air Force 582 | UNI 119

So close to half a decade if you wanna make it sound cool.

Pretty sure it's the most expensive one in the sport?

Much to the chagrin of the people in the neighborhood who voted against it being built. Also we were informed of it's price tag as the administration started slashing support jobs on the research side and paused raises for faculty.

But yeah, it is pretty.

10

u/intothemidwest Northwestern Wildcats 14d ago

Bad optics and really unfortunate trend with academia aside it largely wasn’t the school’s money from what I understand?

13

u/The_Saddest_Boner Northwestern • Notre Dame 14d ago edited 14d ago

Yeah this guy is spouting nonsense. New Ryan field was 100% funded through private donations. The school administration didn’t spend a dime, nor did local taxpayers

-1

u/RagePoop Florida Gators 14d ago

Yes the claim is zero tax money went to it which I’m sure is true.

The university forked over hundreds of millions though. They are private, and constitute a private contribution.

3

u/The_Saddest_Boner Northwestern • Notre Dame 14d ago

Nope. The university spent nothing. It was all the Ryan family and other private donations

1

u/RagePoop Florida Gators 14d ago edited 14d ago

It is very easy to google whether or not the University contributed funds.

They did.

https://lifestylesmagazine.com/latest-news/480-million-ryan-family-gift-becomes-the-875-million-ryan-field-opening-a-century-to-the-day/

First hit on google.

Northwestern had expected to spend about $300 million renovating the old stadium. Building a new one was first priced at $830 million.

The elder Ryan agreed to cover most of that gap.

I was working there at the time it's not any kinda secret that NU put forward a few hundred million. Not sure why you're framing it that way. The Daily Northwestern talked about it plenty, with figures around 300ish million being reported from NU when the plan was first put forth alongside push back from Evanston.

EDIT: second hit: https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/42461968/northwestern-reveals-plans-new-850-million-ryan-field

The cost for new Ryan Field far surpasses the most for a new stadium built in college football, San Diego State's Snapdragon Stadium at $310 million, or the biggest renovation, Texas A&M's Kyle Field at $450 million. Northwestern, which had put aside funds in anticipation of a stadium renovation, will support part of the rebuild, but most will come from the Ryan family.

EDIT: Just realized you're the same guy I responded to below

1

u/RagePoop Florida Gators 14d ago

About 50/50 with the local oligarch family.

5

u/Particular-Carry7626 Florida Gators 14d ago

Ryan Family funded the whole fucking thing dude. Go away

1

u/RagePoop Florida Gators 14d ago

They did not.

They contributed 480 or so of the 900ish million dollar bill. The rest was the university. I taught there while it was being built. Don’t know what’s got your panties in a wad.

2

u/The_Saddest_Boner Northwestern • Notre Dame 14d ago

Give me a single source stating that the university spent its own administrative money on this project

1

u/RagePoop Florida Gators 14d ago edited 14d ago

Yeah none of that suggests the school spent any money on the new stadium. You can easily google this, your sources just state that they were were willing to.

The newly opened $875 million Ryan Field at Northwestern University was entirely privately funded, anchored by a historic $480 million gift from the Patrick and Shirley Ryan family. [1, 2]
📊 Funding Overview

Total Cost: $875 million
Public Investment: $0 (100% privately funded)
Primary Donor: The Ryan Family ($480 million lead contribution)
Additional Sources: University philanthropic fundraising and private capital campaigns [1, 3]

Private capital includes Northwestern. No one is arguing that the public paid for it. I'm baffled by your reticence in imagining the University paid for it's own stadium.

Your top two sources literally say NU contributed lol. The next 3 don't say much of anything at all.

1

u/The_Saddest_Boner Northwestern • Notre Dame 14d ago

None of my sources say northwestern paid for it.

The stadium was 100% paid for by private donations. Zero university budget was used.

Northwestern has a very experienced offensive line, their youngest player is redshirt sophomore LG Dennis Rahouskie, who filled in because Ezomo Oratokhai is out for the season. LT Frant Seagren is a RS junior, center Jackson Carsello is a grad student, RG Anthony Birsa is a RS junior, and RT Deuce McGuire is a grad student. So you have fourth year, third year, fifth year, fourth year, and fifth year going left to right.

You take a veteran experienced offensive line, combined it with the institutional knowledge of a football historian like Chip Kelly, and put it up against a 36 yr old defensive coordinator like D'Anton Lynn, who probably hasn't seen the wing-T offense since he played youth football in Celina, TX in the '90s, and it spells disaster for the Nittany Lions. Lynn cut his teeth coming up as a coach in the NFL, he's literally never coached against some of the concepts that he saw on the field today.

u/TMWNN Ivy League • Hateful 8 3d ago

Lynn cut his teeth coming up as a coach in the NFL, he's literally never coached against some of the concepts that he saw on the field today.

But Lynn was defensive coordinator under Kelly in 2023. If anyone is familiar with Kelly's schemes, it's Lynn.
