Casual [Marcello] Arkansas super booster John Tyson when asked why he can't do for Arkansas football what Cody Campbell is doing for Texas Tech: "He's got oil, I've got chickens."

Kind of ridiculous that someone actually gets asked ‘why don’t you spend your money where Arkansas football fans want you to spend it rather than how you want to spend it?’

u/olduvai_man Arkansas Razorbacks 12d ago

Yeah, it was a stupid question.

This guy is paying for both Coach Cal and the army of 5*'s this year so I don't care if he gives a single cent to football. Make someone else pay for us to be mediocre there.

Yep, and from what I understand the Walmart family has spent a ton on improving NW Arkansas, including charities in the area, etc.

Mostly just Alice. And uh there’s a reason it’s the Walton College of Business. The money just doesn’t make it to athletics.

67

u/meta_irl Vanderbilt Commodores 12d ago edited 11d ago

No, not just Alice. The Waltons set up four $100MM funds for restaurants and nightlife venues in each of the four cities in NWA. One of the kids was really into mountain biking, so he hired the best trail builder in the PNW to build incredible trails in the Ozarks.

Once Walmart decided a few years ago to keep the HQ in NWA instead of moving to Dallas or KC, they decided to make the area attractive enough to compete with Amazon for talent. They've made a ton of investments. There are a lot of things to criticize Walmart for, but the Waltons, from Sam on down, have used their money to lift up that entire region.

24

u/swellfie Georgia Bulldogs 11d ago

The education system there is actually insanely good, too, and there are free museums funded by the family. That area is insanely high QOL.

8

u/GhostOfDrTobaggan Arkansas Razorbacks 11d ago

The Waltons are absolutely not to thank for the education system of Northwest Arkansas (at least not public education). They routinely advocate for voucher systems for private schools to take money away from public schooling and give it to private (Christian) schools. In Arkansas, over 90% of the vouchers went to kids who were already in private school.

Walmart's success as a company has created a biproduct of increasing property value in the area which helps education transitively through property taxes and increasing funding for education; however, their advocacy is directly contrary to public education in the state. They believe a significant portion of the increased tax revenue in Northwest Arkansas should be funneled back to schools that really only help the children of their upper management. That cannot be overlooked.

8

u/meta_irl Vanderbilt Commodores 11d ago

Yeah, a friend of mine almost moved there for a fantastic-sounding job working for Crystal Bridges. I consulted with her a bit. It has a surprisingly high amount of amenities, but it would probably be difficult for her to find the sort of community that she typically surrounds herself with.

They have more people on food stamps than any other private employer in the country. It is an enormous propaganda machine that convinces people that money doesn’t work when poor people spend it, but any money spent by a billionaire is the hand of god showing favor on the wretched, poor, working class.

I'm glad someone else said this. I get Cody Campbell wants to blow cash on Tech, but it also just looks dumb to single-handedly prop up a program like that.

The only one that ever made sense was Phil Knight dropping donations here and there, largely because Oregon’s high level track, football, and basketball teams would go out and actually act as marketing arms through the AD’s partnership. He basically got a massive return off of it

Although that doesn’t really stop most of rich people from doing whatever the hell they want these days.

31

u/thisonesnottaken Georgia Bulldogs 12d ago

Does anyone know the stated basis for the rule? I assume the real reason is something like “donating that much money would kill our bargaining positions against the NFLPA and state/local entities for stadium deals”, but I don’t see how it’s competitively unfair to the NFL owners if they have to draft players anyway.

90

u/PolloMagnifico Texas A&M • North Texas 12d ago

I would assume it's out of concern that the NFL would start recruiting high schoolers. "Hey Kid, I'm Barry McThrowenrun-Handofferson with the Dallas Cowboys. I know you don't want to play for Arkansas/TCU/SMU/Baylor/North Texas, but if you do play for one of them, we'll give you [dollar amount] and instead of declaring for the draft we'll give you a place with the Cowboys in free agency".

But I'm not a lawyer. Hell I'm barely a football fan. I don't know what all the rules are.

26

u/iwearatophat Ohio State • Grand Valley State 12d ago edited 12d ago

Isn't it a rule that they have to go through the draft? Otherwise the draft would be pointless because players would bypass it because who the hell wants to go to the Jets or Browns or something like that. I don't know if it is possible to funnel a player to a certain team.

I think it is just anti-trust stuff and not bypassing it.

My guess is that it's related to the NFL's cross-ownership rule that prevents owners from having teams in other sports outside of their home market. It's why the Nuggets and Avalanche are technically owned by Ann Walton Kroenke and not Stan.

Jerry cares. His name is on a facility or two. (And a cowboys star ugh). The Hunts (JB Hunt Trucking) and Stephens (private investment bank) are also boosters. Here’s the rub there’s talk that Chad Morris was Jerry’s guy so that soured some stuff. It’s also seemingly been impossible to get them all on the same page for the same coach which NEEDS to happen. The elephant in the room is always Jim and Rob Walton who both went to Arkansas and getting them to pitch in. They’re both worth around 150 billion.

Also Tyson is being flippant he’s worth more than Campbell. Or at worst close.

29

u/putsch80 Oklahoma Sooners • Arkansas Razorbacks 12d ago

John Tyson spent like a total of 2 years at the U of A, and doesn't hold a degree from there. The money he's donated to basketball is because he's from Springdale and likes the hogs. I don't think it's even in the realm of fairness for the media to imply he should be doing more than he already has.

I’d imagine some business owners just don’t see the return as worth it.

Like with the Cowboys he has arguably one of the best assets in the country, much less in sports.

Donating to NIL basically gives you bragging rights and pride for your Alma mater at the end of the day? Don’t get me wrong I’m very glad the Ryan’s for instance have been willing and able to help build up this program at NU little by little but I can totally see why not all rich guys get into this.

I’m a LR born Arkansas grad and even I know it’s hurting us to play there at this point.

6

u/blotsfan Missouri Tigers 12d ago edited 12d ago

Maybe I’m wrong, but my understanding is that you have a ton of major boosters who have made it clear they won’t give a penny if you get rid of the Little Rock game.

Edit: actually it looks like you aren’t playing a game there this year. Did the University actually stop?

5

u/Smoocci-Mane Arkansas Razorbacks 12d ago edited 12d ago

That’s partially true but at some point we needed to call their bluff. We can’t bring recruits there, the stadium is an absolute dump, and it creates an extra road game every year in terms of travel and impact on the players and coaches. Before A&M moved to home and home we essentially lost two home games every year from these stupid agreements.

I think if the city of Little Rock was interested in investing more in the stadium we could have that discussion, but they seem content to let it fall into the ground eventually. Plus, the money’s shifting. There’s old money in LR but the more NWA grows the less sense it makes and the less impact those old money boosters have.

Saw your edit - agreement ended last year and we have no new plans to go back, though they haven’t formally said we’re not doing it again.

I read that Bud Walton donated a lot of the money used to build the basketball arena (hence the name Bud Walton Arena). Is it just the younger Walton generations that don’t care about Arkansas athletics?

7

u/PBurns20 Arkansas Razorbacks 12d ago

The part of the family that likes sports donates to Mizzou or is involved in pro-sports ownership.

The “Arkansas” portion of the family is 3rd generation billionaires that don’t care about college sports. The grandparents are building museums and doing pet projects, the parents sending grandkids to Ivies and the families have zero interest in college football and little connection to the university of Arkansas at this point

Jerry Jones can give to the school, which is why his name is on a practice facility there, but the NFL bylaws prevent him from contributing to NIL funds. The Waltons either own pro sports teams they care way more about or went to Purdue. They’ve invested in the business school, but don’t have any interest in the athletic program

Arkansas’ two wealthiest alumni by a mile are both precluded from donating to Arkansas’ NIL collective by the NFL’s moratorium on any owners with a stake larger than something like 20% donating to collegiate NIL (although NFL owners are going to talk about killing that rule after this season).

Jerry Jones is worth a cool ~$8B, so approximately double Cody Campbell, and then Rob Walton is worth between ~$145B. Neither of them is allowed to donate to Arkansas’ NIL unless they want to sell off the Cowboys and the Broncos, respectively.

Arkansas is, bar none, the college program most hampered by that rule, although I imagine that SMU would sure like the Hunts (the kids are all prohibited from donating because of how they structured the family ownership in the Chiefs) and Carlie Irsay (not an SMU alum, but her dad played there and she’s a fan) be donating to the ponies.

3

u/ValleyNoticer Sam Houston Bearkats 11d ago

(although NFL owners are going to talk about killing that rule after this season).

My guess is they keep it. They want to avoid the idea that an NFL franchise can bankroll a collegiate team.

u/Smoocci-Mane Arkansas Razorbacks 12d ago

Also, Walmarts so big they just bring in people from other companies with no ties to Arkansas to run the budgets that could go towards NIL.

Plenty of Arkansas grads at Walmart, very few with any clout or ability to control how the real money’s spent.

I just want to vent that in mid 2000s, Tyson was great. They had these tequila lime frozen wings that were still some of the best wing I ever had.

Cant find them now and every bag of chicken I get from then is 30% less than the bag size and price would allow you to assume. A buffalo tenders bag is like 5 actual tenders, 6 nubs, and 20 chunks of just breading.

I boycotted them long ago.

Last year aside, they haven’t won fewer than 4 or more than 9 since 1983, with a median of just over 7 wins.
