We need better officiating in CFB considering the amount of money it generates.

Every conference needs to adopt the live review ACC games have at least

195

u/CarlSteezer Baylor Bears • Army Black Knights 6d ago

B12 has it too. Everyone needs to

I wish the broadcasts would actually show it. I think I've seen it like once

70

u/AthenaQ Alabama • Valdosta State 6d ago

You know what, that’s a great idea.  I just want them to have some accountability.

62

u/FireMike_PleaseGod Florida State Seminoles 6d ago

It’s actually really cool. You can appreciate how quick they are trying to make decisions and the logic they use.

Just a back and forth of “did you see it like this, if so we need to do this. If not what did you see to make the other thing true”. Makes you have more faith in the call even if you disagree.

4

u/Odd-Power3779 6d ago

You hit the nail on the head.. Accountability! That might help the 'perception' of ref-bias on many calls/no calls! Damn, I hate feeling so jaded watching a sport I usually enjoy.

6

u/hokiesean Virginia Tech Hokies 6d ago

Even with that, ACC still gets it wrong and the officiatting is still trash

9

u/SuitableAd3509 6d ago

The ACC has the worst ref crew in the P4 lmfaoooo

52

u/Huge_Employment_6424 Alabama • Northwestern 6d ago

You can watch the incompetence play out and hold the individuals accountable when they make incorrect calls. Transparency is pretty much always a good thing when you entrust decision-making power to a single person/group.

17

u/Laney20 Alabama Crimson Tide • Marching Band 6d ago

The accountability is the relevant step. We watched all the bs happen on the screens today. We know it was bad. That won't make them accountable...

-2

u/SuitableAd3509 6d ago

No because it actually just pisses you off more when you can listen to how fucking stupid everyone involved in officiating this sport is. "Oh great they just spend 2 minutes looking at his knee but didn't even notice he bobbled the ball and i heard it all live on air."

20

u/sneakyxxrocket Florida State • Georgia 6d ago

u/Gottatrytho Notre Dame • Illinois State 6d ago

Bro, B1G

1

u/zypo88 Alabama Crimson Tide 6d ago

If there's one thing all fans can "agree" on it's that their own conference has the worst refs in the league

0

u/SuitableAd3509 6d ago

It's not even close to the incompetence of the ACC.

4

u/Gottatrytho Notre Dame • Illinois State 6d ago

We put extra seconds on the clock for no reason.

3

u/SuitableAd3509 6d ago

play took under 6 seconds. Blame the tv clock crew

2

u/Maverick1091 Paper Bag • Florida Gators 6d ago

Since the B1G adopted it all it’s done is show the incompetence of the review booth. Hasn’t helped with perception honestly.

2

u/BiggsDiesAtTheEnd 6d ago

The rule needs to fundamentally change. Too much deference is given to calls on the field. Just make the right call either way.

There are some calls where there's a grainy view but it's still definitive and a better crisp view but inconclusive due to angle and they will just say inconclusive because the crisper camera shot wasn't conclusive.

u/Bornlastnight Wisconsin Badgers 6d ago

It was nowhere close to as bad as the NFC championship game

47

u/Always_Chubb-y Georgia Bulldogs • Transfer Portal 6d ago

Ok this is 100% revisionist history

The NFCCG game one was so bad they changed the rules to allow for challenging DPIs for a whole season

36

u/Callsign_Psycopath Georgia Bulldogs • Sickos 6d ago

Then the Refs never overturned a PI call because they didn't like having their feelings hurt.

7

u/DwightKPoop Mississippi State Bulldogs 6d ago edited 6d ago

Not true, and a not so fun fact to go with it: The very first overturned PI call went against the Saints.

Edit: AI told me I’m wrong. First overturned call was apparently Tampa vs SF. Sherman was called for a PI after Arians challenged the play. Saints were never successful in challenging and got eliminated from playoffs on a TD with a clear OPI by Kyle Rudolph. And now I’m sad and going to sleep.

13

u/Always_Chubb-y Georgia Bulldogs • Transfer Portal 6d ago

1

u/doormatt26 USC Trojans • Michigan Wolverines 6d ago

-5

u/KlingoftheCastle Alabama Crimson Tide • Thomas More Saints 6d ago

The biggest difference is that they didn't throw a flag and then decide to not call it in the NFC Champ. The refs saw the penalty and made a decision to not penalize Georgia

1

u/whatevernevermind2 5d ago

They didn’t throw a flag in the Georgia game either. That was the broadcast anticipating a flag. But no flag was actually thrown. And I really think that’s why it’s such a big controversy because I can show dozens of end zone shots where they let it go in big games and let the players play. Half the world thinks they picked a flag up cause of broadcast. They also called Lawson Luckie for a phantom holding that took 7 off the board. You can play the blame the refs game every game but anyone who’s played football knows you can’t leave it in the refs hands. And that’s not even relevant here lmao it was still 2nd down and bama was in fg range. Keelon got lit up the next play

1

u/KlingoftheCastle Alabama Crimson Tide • Thomas More Saints 5d ago

It’s controversial because it’s the most obvious missed call since the NFC Championship game lol. If you think that was Phantom then I hope you enjoyed your first football game lol

199

u/CodyRCantrell Oklahoma • Red River Shootout 6d ago

OU/Texas and UK/LSU games were equally bad. Both had catches called out of bounds with a ref being within 10 yards of the reception with nothing obstructing their views.

It also gets really irritating when a crew will let them play for 50 minutes then call everything by the book for the last 10 minutes with a flag on nearly every play.

11

u/GrassFedFi Oklahoma Sooners • Colorado Buffaloes 6d ago

catches called out of bounds with a ref being within 10 yards of the reception with nothing obstructing their views.

The first on the left sideline was a bona fide NFL catch by a mile, clear as day. Absolutely zero movement from the ball, secure catch from the start...zero excuse to get that wrong.

Glad it was corrected after review but it shouldn't have been necessary.

5

u/CodyRCantrell Oklahoma • Red River Shootout 6d ago

What hurts the most for those is that it is essentially giving the defense free timeouts to regroup, rest a bit, and plan for the next play when they're worn out at end of reg.

1

u/DIKS_OUT_4_HARAMBE Oklahoma Sooners • SEC 5d ago

In that case, as Gabe Ikard pointed out, it was more beneficial to us because it gave us a free time out to scheme a must-need play with only seconds left. If we were marching down the field, yeah it would’ve benefitted Texas, but we weren’t lol.

15

Gross. I hope people don’t actually do that when training their puppies. Dogs naturally don’t want to soil their home and if they’re having accidents, that’s on the owner for not giving them an outlet

Years ago I heard a story of somebody who literally rubbed his dogs nose it it's own shit and then would put it in it's crate.

Did it so much that the dog had an accident, rubbed his own nose in it, and then went into the crate while the owner was away.

He literally unintentionally trained his dog to do that. Genuinely some people shouldn't have pets.

17

u/Crims0ntied Alabama Crimson Tide 6d ago

The targeting was what really pissed me off because that's player safety. I get that it's controversial, but come on. PI gets missed here and there. You CANNOT miss a direct forceful blow with the crown of the helmet against a defenseless player.

8

u/bleepblorp Georgia Bulldogs • College Football Playoff 6d ago

The weird thing about the targeting is that it wasn't even targeting on the Alabama WR, but the UGA player straight domed his teammate.

2

u/hearthebeard Alabama • Kennesaw State 6d ago

I mean it was both. The concussion didn’t come from nowhere.

9

On the replay it looked like his head bounced pretty hard off the ground.

2

u/mostlycharmless9 UAB Blazers • Alabama Crimson Tide 6d ago

watch it again, he gets drilled in the side of the head first. Hard to say which impact causes the concussion obviously, but he was definitely hit helmet to helmet.

-5

Yeah wonder what made his head hit the ground that hard 🤦‍♂️

5

u/bleepblorp Georgia Bulldogs • College Football Playoff 6d ago

I'm not excusing it, but I think the tackle is what made his head hit the ground, not the fact that a UGA player missled another UGA player's head.

2

u/mostlycharmless9 UAB Blazers • Alabama Crimson Tide 6d ago

1

u/bleepblorp Georgia Bulldogs • College Football Playoff 6d ago

It was bad on both sides. There was an absolutely egregious hold missed on the first bama TD. Like a UGA defender in the QBs lap with a bama OLineman holding him around the neck.

6

u/LocalGeographer 6d ago

It is entertaining to watch Bama fans whine about bad calls when they have such a history of benefiting from them. That first half TD pass holding call was obvious as were other holding calls. Bama did not lose because of the refs.

1

u/Fells Alabama Crimson Tide 6d ago

I think its relevant in context to the massive amount of poor reffing during the game.

5

u/GoldandBlue Notre Dame Fighting Irish 6d ago

that was egregious but there were some terrible calls and no calls. Its a weekly thing. We used to joke about Pac-12 refs, i guess they permeated every conference now.

u/phaskellhall 6d ago

There was a face mask on the next sac play too right? No one even mentioned it.

Then to have the Kirbstreet bring up the interception again. There was about 6” of daylight between the ball and the ground on that replay. How did the booth reverse it without actually reviewing it?

4

u/terribliz Alabama Crimson Tide 6d ago

Unless they had a secret angle they refused to show the public, there was absolutely nothing definitive to say it bounced off the ground and not his body.

1

6

u/qotsabama Alabama Crimson Tide 6d ago

It’s the fact they didn’t call that PI but called a worse example of same play on us earlier.

2

u/viper2369 Georgia Bulldogs 6d ago

And the lack of holding not called on their first TD was the same. Absolute arm bar across the chest (can’t post the screen capture here). They have gotten away with so many BS calls over the years, no one is gonna feel pity for them.

2

u/LocalGeographer 6d ago

What about the obvious hold on a Georgia player on Bama's touchdown in the first half? That was more obvious than the PI but Kirk and Fowler didn't whine about that missed call.

1

u/Both_Language_1219 6d ago

You put it so.......elegantly. Crazy. Safety just trucked the receiver with no intention of making a play on the ball. Ref seemed to freeze for a sec or two debating his next move

I think SEC refs are notoriously atrocious. I hate auburn with my soul but against Oklahoma and Georgia last year they got screwed

7

u/MerryGoWrong Auburn Tigers 6d ago

I'm still salty about that, they gave Georgia an extra bonus time out with no explanation at all.

u/Adam_Silver_Is_Bald South Alabama • Alabama 6d ago

And screwed up the fumble call that could’ve set auburn up with a free TD

I had forgotten about this!  It was so bad I was texting Barners to express sympathy.

Pay them more and hold them to a higher standard

4

u/Seasonedpro86 Alabama Crimson Tide 6d ago

Aren’t they making $150,000 a year to work maybe 14 days a year?

3

u/InspectorRack Georgia Bulldogs 6d ago

lol it's like $3k/game

-4

u/y3llowed Alabama Crimson Tide 6d ago

That’s $42k a year for 2 weeks of work. You think they need to be paid more to be held to a higher standard?!

12

u/InspectorRack Georgia Bulldogs 6d ago

With how much money the sport generates and how important they are to games running smoothly? Yes.

2

u/y3llowed Alabama Crimson Tide 6d ago

What’s preventing them from being held to a higher standard for $600/hr?

And you really think there are better people that are passing up on the job because of pay?

1

u/FootballAndPornAcct Georgia Bulldogs • College Football Playoff 6d ago

I don't know what they get paid but it's probably enough

u/onesneakymofo Alabama • Jacksonville State 6d ago

Oh my god .. r/cfb is on Bama's side? Harambe really changed the universe

7

u/Ok-Drag-5929 Alabama Crimson Tide • Oklahoma Sooners 6d ago

That's how I know the refs screwed us. CFB is never on our side.

u/Hilldawg4president Georgia Bulldogs 6d ago

Everyone agrees they were shit, missed holding calls on bama all night. Your first td should have been a 10yd sack, if not for the holding

There are times I really wish coaches would have the balls to go to the refs and tell them they are protesting the game and refuse to send their players back out after something horrifically bad. That call would be one of the very few I think you justify doing it for.

Force the refs and the conference to justify what happened. Don't give everyone the satisfaction of a real ending. Take your ball and go home.

3

u/stopthemeyham Alabama • Mississippi State 6d ago

You know it's bad when both teams aren't mad at each other, but at the refs. Like do I think that any specific penalty would have given us the win? Who can say. What I can say though, is that it's sad when even the winning team is pissed at the refs.

5

u/Charming_Cucumber_15 Auburn Tigers 6d ago

The SEC has had tons of issues over the last few years, look at the Auburn vs Oklahoma and Auburn vs Georgia games last year

Blatant cheating and bias, some of those refs are now banned for life. More of the same today

u/Skidda24 Ohio State Buckeyes • Illibuck 6d ago

The NFL makes more money yet still has officiating just as bad. Officiating is awful across football

2

u/Ok_Passage_7151 USC Trojans • Pac-10 6d ago

Or.  Hear me out… we spend all that extra money on betting ads and pay everyone but the refs more money.

2

u/imbaylee 6d ago

it’s crazy, this is a problem in almost every single sport i watch. football, basketball, soccer, men, women, doesn’t matter.

2

u/Kaoticzer0 Georgia Bulldogs 6d ago

I’m starting to think 90% of people turned the game on in the 4th quarter. Was that PI, sure. Did Alabama get a single offensive holding call the entire game? I don’t think so, saw at least 4-5 blatant ones. Especially on the free DT up the middle when the QB scrambled for 40 yards. UGA was also called for 2-3 phantom holds and an offensive PI where the linebacker trucked the WR.

u/ErraticSiren 6d ago

Refs job being taken over by AI is the one instance I think is ok.

1

u/Greedygiddy8 6d ago

CFB was robbing kids for decades now you say this, it should’ve been had better officiating

The powers that be care way more about a 24 team playoff to protect their investment into their football programs by way of handouts

SEC officials had a day today

u/nerd_with_anxiety 6d ago

well, sir, unfortunately for us, sports gambling makes more so that takes precedent over the quality of the product 🫩

1

u/KlingoftheCastle Alabama Crimson Tide • Thomas More Saints 6d ago

What are you talking about? This is exactly the officiating that keeps the gambling money coming in

u/Party_Size_ North Dakota State Bison 6d ago

But, that would go against what Greg wants, why would that happen?????

Make players, schools, and fanbases responsible for it.

Each team should have a dedicated staff at each game doing nothing but calling penalties on themselves.

People who support ref-coddled teams should be disallowed from social media until they can convince their teams to stop cheating.

1

u/Prudent_Craft_7461 6d ago

It is quite infuriating that the refs are part time employees with as much money the conferences have. The main reason the refs are so bad is that this isn’t even their day job

1

u/mbh223 Texas • Arizona State 6d ago

What if the powers in the room see sometimes poor officiating as a feature and not a bug?

1

u/MikeyRocks757 Virginia Tech Hokies 6d ago

Tell me about it

1

u/Narrow-Paramedic4051 LSU Tigers • Tulane Green Wave 6d ago

Can't help but notice that with the increase in gambling that the refs have declined in quality.

That missed call will go down as one of the worst in recent memory. This is not like a missed hold in the 2nd quarter that resulted in four yards. Everything was on the line; you have to get that right.

On that note, while I'm never happy about my alma mater losing a game, I am quite pleased that Kiffin is getting another black eye. I won't be donating or watching games until he is gone.

We need the XFL 2.0 “you can challenge anything” rule .. I don’t know if the UFL adopted this since their product on the field was never at the caliber of the XFL

1

u/FrostTroll69 Ohio State Buckeyes 6d ago

Ask western Michigan how they feel too

0

u/qotsabama Alabama Crimson Tide 6d ago

Hope Georgia fans realize we’re not mad at them or the Georgia team. I for one feel like I completely wasted my time watching that game. Just an awful product from the sport.
