News [Chris Hummer] It’s trending toward Oregon starting Brock Thomas at QB tomorrow against Nebraska, sources tell @mzenitz and me. Thomas began the year as the Ducks’ 3rd-string QB but replaced Dylan Raiola late in Oregon’s game vs. UCLA.

Even as a hater, I’m kinda stunned how vulnerable Oregon is this year.
Losing one coordinator is one thing. You adjust. Losing both…well…

u/BroadbentBum Oregon Ducks 21h ago
Lanning didn't go out and find real coordinators. We've earned this through our hubris. Let this be a lesson to any head coach who's feeling himself!
45
u/Temassi Oregon Ducks 21h ago
I hope it's a lesson he carries with him moving forward. It's just crazy because it's not the first time he's had to find new coordinators.
I bet he did it to try to keep things the same a last year. Don't upset the apple cart for Moore's final year. That strategy has not worked out though.

u/BroadbentBum Oregon Ducks 21h ago

I want the Duke's Mayo Bowl. So when we win Dan can get a bunch of mayo dumped on him as a humiliation ritual so he doesn't promote from within again.

Hampton is fine, maybe even good. He did very well against UCLA and against USC the defense did well. He is hopefully just getting into a groove.

I thought even the Boise State game was pretty good. They converted short yardage and we made a couple errors, but otherwise we held them in check pretty well, they just played a good game. The Oklahoma State game is the only one that was really bad and I'm not gonna throw Hampton in the same boat as whatever the fuck is happening on offense for one bad game out of five

u/Revolutionary_Elk791 Oregon Ducks • Linfield Wildcats 19h ago
Hampton at least seems to be improving, let's see how the rest of the season plays out on that side of the ball. Purely in terms of defense I thought we did good against the LA schools. This OC so far is......oof. On one hand, sure it's difficult to adjust when you go a whole off-season planning on Moore being the guy. But I dunno, we were very unimaginative when we had him healthy.....zero urgency against Oklahoma State for example.....and it's a big steamy mess without him. Raiola shitting the bed so badly......to a legendary degree against UCLA that it put him so firmly in the doghouse despite how admirably he played against USC....it's very bad. We really need to go in another direction with OC at minimum.
3
u/BroadbentBum Oregon Ducks 19h ago
Totally agree. A different fan also said Hampton seems to be improving and I agree. The offense is inexcusable imo. I feel like some position coaches should also be in the hot seat. QB, OL, maybe even DL and LB. LB has never been a strength, and the DL has not performed at the level most expected by a long shot

This is something people don't appreciate enough with the more consistent programs. It's hard to replace good assistants. At some point there is a fuckup and it's a question of how quickly your head coach fixes it.

It’s not just the coordinators. The O Line is the bigger problem. We’ve gotten worse there very year under the current O Line coach, and parched a hole last year with three transfers. This year it’s all guys he recruited and developed and it’s been a disaster.
Add that to a bad offensive coordinator, a QB injury, and a schedule that’s a lot tougher than it looked going into the year and this is what you get

Brock Thomas is also Oregons walk on QB who went to Sheldon High school before walking on at Oregon: the same high school Justin Herbert went to
200
u/Vocen Oregon Ducks 21h ago edited 21h ago
To be clear to unfamiliar onlookers, the similarities to Herbert end there. Brock Thomas is 5'10", not particularly fast, and an adequate arm would probably be the most charitable thing to say. He's a local Eugene walk on that looks like a local walk on.

He is better than how Raiola played vs UCLA and worse than how Raiola played vs USC. I'd probably think of him as like, the starter on a decent FCS team who is competent but no big teams would be recruiting as a transfer

u/LithHarborGymLeader USC Trojans 21h ago
I feel like this is going to tank Raiola's confidence. Im just barely getting caught up on CFB news for the week, this is a performance related benching right?
60
u/AkfurAshkenzic Oregon Ducks • Michigan Wolverines 21h ago

I mean, UCLA changed up how they were playing defense, and seemed to be barely trying against Stewart on that TD reception.
33
u/Vocen Oregon Ducks 21h ago
Raiola's confidence isn't of particular concern now. If he doesn't start tomorrow, it indicates he is probably never going to play a meaningful snap for Oregon again. Certainly he's not going to be on the roster next year if he's getting benched for the walk-on.
Yes, performance based, he played a truly atrocious game last week. He was unplayable.

u/fazelenin02 Nebraska Cornhuskers 18h ago
Yeah I'm not sure I've ever seen such a career derailing performance, in the span of less than one game, he went from a guy waiting for the keys of a team that has been nothing short of an NFL factory who was a potential first round pick in 2028, to probably hitting the portal again, landing at some low level P4 or maybe even G6, and having very questionable NFL QB potential.

This is a huge must win for both programs. Oregon is extremely unlikely to make the playoffs now, but they still have an outside chance if they can get Moore healthy until Ohio State and play to their potential. Nebraska is facing a 3rd string QB after a disappointing close loss to the defending national champions. Nebraska can prove they are legit by going into Austen and handling an Oregon team that is now on their last legs.

u/AbsurdOwl Nebraska Cornhuskers 21h ago
I know it might seem silly, given preseason expectations, but this is Nebraska's chance to prove they're not just good, but that they're a real contender for a playoff spot. If we can win this and give OSU a good run, we can be playing for a bid against Iowa on Black Friday.

Sadly that’s not true. You can call the best game you want but if the defense can get pressure with three or four guys quickly, no offense can succeed. Not even Tom Brady could overcome that, see the 2007 Super Bowl. We can’t run the ball and we can’t protect the QB at all.

But Oregon has been mostly successful with that. First with Bo Nix from who was a disappointment at Auburn to success at Oregon and first round pick then Dante Moore was benched during his first year at UCLA and then had success with Oregon and was a projected 1st round pick last year and this year. But that was probably about Dillingham and Will Stein. I still think the Ducks should start Raiola and give him at least a few possessions to see if he can play l more like he did against USC.
8
u/balzun Oregon Ducks 20h ago
This. Went from Stein and Dilly coaching QBS to the ice cream guy who basically has admitted to being just as surprised as we all were when he got the job.
All joking aside, I don't know the slightest bit about QB coaching but I sorta feel that as the most important position in the game it should have a slightly more tenured coach or at least someone who played the position.
Koa could be he next coming or Chip Kelly but the this was not the team or time to give him a go.

Having watched every single snap of Raiola's at Nebraska, he wasn't BAD. He did about as good as you can realistically expect a true freshman to do on a bad team in the Big10.
But then his sophomore year he didn't take the huge jump you'd expect a 5* guy with experience to take. The wonder was if it was because of Nebraska's terrible OLine or if Raiola just isn't that dude. Turns out it was a little bit of both.

It's kinda ironic that last season, Dylan had almost identical stats to Moore up until he broke his leg. With way less talent.

Why didn't Oregon's coaches just make Raiola not shit the bed? Are they stupid?
(they might be, but the meme still applies)

Tbf he did do very well against USC on the road.
Then he did a complete 180 at home against UCLA.

He genuinely looked like he forgot how to throw a football.

Idk. I feel like I need some sources from these guys saying this. Lanning wouldn’t put Brock in unless Raiola came into practice this past week looking like hot ass. They laid a couple million minimum on the gamble this guy would start next year. So why would you not just play him to get more data and reps so you know wtf you need to do in the offseason?
With this year going down the drain, I have very little faith in 2027. We lose so many starters to the draft this year or being seniors. Then what we have no QB plan for 2027 now? Gamble on a portal transfer? Yikes

Maybe they feel Nebraska knows him too well. And the mind game within this game doesn’t favor Dylan.
