Discussion Can new rivalries be made

Georgia and Alabama have had some crazy games over the past 20 years or so. We've had some of the craziest games. They had our fucking number but we're finally turning the tide on them(no pun intended lol) We won our first national championship in 40 years against a team that shut our shit down time and time again.

Yet people keep telling me this is not a true rivalry. But it's the team and game I look forward to the most now fuck florida. So I want other people's opinion, is this not the biggest rivalry in the SEC at this point or what

yup, I view UGA kinda the same way I viewed clemson ten years ago, or LSU. in no way do I hate them as much as tennessee or auburn.

I think that's perfect, rivalries based on both being really good at the same time don't really stand up. Look at Alabama/ Clemson.

Florida and LSU werent really rivals till the 2000s but it got as toxic as any other rivalry we have

Especially the hurricane game

21

u/jdinkalage_moorgoone LSU Tigers • UAB Blazers 6h ago

I’d consider the 2007 game where the lsu students got tebows number and the 5 4th down conversions on that last drive to be the real tipping point where everyone on both sides decided “I fucking hate those guys”

11

u/SoutieNaaier Florida Gators • Columbia Lions 6h ago

True, and then hurricane game brought up a lot of collective trauma in both states which put it over the top

Same with Georgia and Tennessee before the division split in 1992.

No, I think the Alabama Georgia match up has become a competitive match up because it usually has national championships implications. Georgia and Alabama don’t usually play in the regular season, that’s been a more recent development. They went many years without playing at all. A lot of people talked about how Georgia hadnt beat Bama in Bryant-Denny since 2007 but they had only played twice there since then. In that same time, they have played in the SEC championship 5 times.

So it’s more akin to how Alabama and Florida were back in the 90s and 2000s. They mostly only played in the SEC championship so it became more of a battle for who is the best, not a true rivalry.

Kentucky’s a good example of the fluidity of it I think. We have always had and will always have Tennessee, but the Louisville rivalry only started in the 90’s.

Indiana we have more history with in basketball with 57 games, but in football we only have 36 games and none in 20+ years. We might have more of a nasty football rivalry between coaches/players/fans online with USCjr than IU these days.

6

u/randomthrowaway9796 Georgia Bulldogs 6h ago

Yes. You could also make arguments for Tennessee, Clemson, and South Carolina being rivals, but theyre all significantly weaker arguments than the main 3. Then Bama and Texas are the modern epic SEC matchups, but not rivals with Georgia.

3

u/AndrewMcIlroy Georgia Bulldogs • Rose Bowl 6h ago

Yea South Carolina considers us a big rival. Clemson was huge but was lost. I'd really say Tennessee isnt one.

For me Clemson and USC make the cut.

1

u/randomthrowaway9796 Georgia Bulldogs 6h ago

The issue with South Carolina is that they really dont have a lot of history with most SEC teams, so you throw in geography and a few big upsets over the years, and thats how a rivalry is born.

Clemson 100% is a lost rivalry. The fact that we didnt once play them during their late 2010s peak is asinine. And now with the 9 conference game schedule, 4 games with them have been canceled, and idk when we'll encounter them next. Very unfortunate, they are literally the closest P4 school to Athens.

Tennessee feels like a rivalry. That game last year was one of my favorites from college. They've been a big team that we've played a ton through the SEC east days. Im a younger fan, so maybe I'm just not aware of the lack of history with them.

1

u/HBTFD1785 Georgia Bulldogs 3h ago

SC makes up for it with 11 years of Hatin' Ass Spurrier as their coach.

As a Braves fan, SC reminds me of the Washington Nationals. Despite being in the same division as us, I didn't ever truly hate them. I just indirectly hated them through my hate for Harper/Spurrier. After those people were gone, I was cool with them again.

Prior to going to divisions in 1992 Clemson and UGA played a ton due to the proximity. Outside of Ga Tech, they are our closest p4 school and there’s a book about the history of the rivalry called “fighting like cats and dogs.”

At 1992, we had played Clemson more than we had played

Tennessee
South Carolina

LSU

3

u/Dr_Lizardo11 Georgia • Florida State 3h ago

Clemson was a big rival back when I was there (early 80s)

2

u/Late-Application-47 Georgia Tech • Brewton-Parker 5h ago

It wasn't even that long ago that UGA v Clemson was a fairly frequent early season game; I recall it being played several times during the Richt era.

Historically, Clemson and Auburn are rivals of both UGA and Tech. Should we combine our hate against them...🤔

Sorry for even entertaining that blasphemy. It is tradition that we take a yearly rivalry-week beating out of pure spite with a side of self-masochism, celebrating our once-per decade victory (the two victories from the 2010s will cover us for this pathetic decade). 😂

On our side, I'd like to see one of our historic SEC rivalries renewed. To me, Vanderbilt is the obvious choice; the location is good fit, the series has a trophy attached to it, and, unless things change for either program, it would be a consistently competitive game.

8

u/Free-Eights Michigan Wolverines • Columbia Lions 5h ago

Every rivalry has to start from somewhere. Most of the classic rivalries you think of usually involve a component of playing the other every season, key moments where one team spoiled the others' hopes and aspirations, and over the course of a few years have considerable winner take all type stakes (in a localized context).

I don't know if I'd call Georgia-Bama a rivalry by that standard but I think it's a high-stakes competitive game that's meaningful in the national landscape. The real test would be if that feeling holds when one or both schools is just mediocre

If this series continues to be toxic and competitive once both programs are mid (or at least not at the top of the SEC) for a decade or 2, it could morph into more of a rivalry. As of now, its more like Ohio State - Oregon than a true rivalry. More of a "theyre the other top SEC team that we have the opportunity to beat" than a true rivalry.

No, it is not the biggest rivalry in the SEC. Doesn’t even crack the top 10.

The closest comparison I can think of is Tennessee-Florida. We weren’t rivals, then started playing annually in the 90s and usually the game decided the SEC East. There was something on the line. Sure, Georgia and Bama played for a natty in 22 and Alabama made the 4 team CFP over Georgia in 23 by winning the SEC CG, but now, you’re just playing for seeding in a playoff and nothing more.

There are different levels and flavors of rivalries, but I'd say yes.

For UCLA basketball, Arizona is a newish rivalry (like 30-40 years) and Gonzaga is quickly becoming a rival as well.

If you play enough big games against each other, with high stakes or emotions, naturally you start circling those games on your calendar.

I think the really strong rivalries have to start outside the game. Like UM-OSU - the states fought a freaking war, or Saints/Falcons which piggybacks on the Atlanta/New Orleans city rivalry going back a century or more or a bigoted anti-Catholic fucking over a small private Catholic school.

1

u/Scuterius_Floridae 5h ago

They can, but there needs to be proximity, high stakes games, or a mixture of both.

If fsu went to the sec, it would be rather easy to build up rivalries with programs like Auburn, LSU, Bama, and UGA because of our location, where I alumni rub elbows with their alums, and the ability to play in high stakes games.

But if we went into the big 10, it either would take longer or wouldn’t happen because of the geographic distance

1

I think new rivals will become more common with the conferences changing, Oregon or Indiana might become a rival for some big 10 teams now they are a contender.

Indiana v Ohio St is starting to turn into a proper rivalry. 2 years ago, IUs only regular season loss was @ OSU. OSU went on to win the natty. Last year OSU's first loss was in the B1G championship game to IU. IU went on to win the natty. They're playing a scrappy game right now both in the top 5.

Of both teams are consistently high level and play regularly, a rivalry will form. It's natural.

New rivalries can be made, but they aren't born overnight or even over a couple of decades. I do look forward to Georgia vs. Alabama games with a sense of dread and excitement, so it feels like a rivalry, but it's going to be harder to establish them no playing every year. These conference expansions have really dampened the possibility of new rivalries emerging IMO

1

u/RockitDanger Georgia Southern Eagles 3h ago

I think a good rivalry should come from the students shit talking the better school itself, not just the football program. The football should be more of an "and" than anything else to have a whole school rivalry. "Our school creates 6 figure graduates AND we run the ball down your throats every time we meet".

I think a fun idea would be a random rivalry. Like at the beginning of the year there's a shuffle and your annual rival is chosen. So you get an historical rivalry game and an extra hate game.

1

u/dbelcher17 Alabama Crimson Tide • Tulane Green Wave 2h ago

I want to beat UGA when they're on the schedule, and I want them to lose to the extent it will help Bama in the rankings or standings. This is how I feel about LSU, Texas, Ohio State, etc.

I want Auburn and Tennessee to fail miserably at everything they attempt to do.

1

u/Kodyaufan2 Auburn • Jacksonville State 1h ago

I think you can make new short-term rivals, but not rivals that last for generations.

Alabama-Georgia is now what Alabama-LSU was for the last decade plus. It’s a rivalry in that those are the two best teams in the conference more often than not, so you know you’ve gotta go through them to accomplish your goals for the season. But it’s not the kinda game where if both teams finish 7-5 you’d go “well at least we beat Alabama.”

You look forward to the game right now because that’s the team you’ve gotta beat to win the SEC. Not because of rivalry hatred. There’s a difference.

1

u/Sunday_Schoolz Georgia Bulldogs 45m ago

Absolutely. I consider Boise State a rival of Oregon since that 2009 game. And Texas is a new rival of Georgia as they have tried to attain the heights of the SEC since joining.

1

u/AliceOtsuFan 6h ago edited 6h ago

Yes, college football fans are sometimes stingy about what is and isn’t a rivalry. Just because it’s not a traditional rivalry doesn’t mean it doesn’t have its merits. All rivalries had to start from somewhere. A general rule of thumb is that if the fans of two teams have to insist to neutrals/casuals that they don’t have a rivalry; then 9/10 times they do have a rivalry. Also the average age of a member of this sub tends to skew older and as someone from Georgia, Bama is among the top 3 hated teams from the Gen Z/Alpha age of UGA fans. Also fans should acknowledge that two teams can be rivals without being their A-tier rivalry. For example, Georgia has 3 A tier rivals in Tech, Florida, and Auburn; Similarly South Carolina has one in Clemson. However I consider Georgia and South Carolina rivals too, just not either’s A tier rivals.

1

u/KosmoKanyon Georgia Bulldogs 6h ago

I slick root for bama when we're not playing each other so that's it. I kinda get why it's not a true rivalry.

1

u/New-Disaster-2061 Texas Longhorns 6h ago

Rivalries are built on hate. Not just oh I hate those guys but a deep rooted generational hate that is deep seeded in the bones and soul. A feeling of something is wrong when you see certain colors. A feeling desperation when seeing a child in rival gear on how you can save him from a life time of being them. There is still time for them to see the light. I was told if I went to Texas A&M I would not be disowned fully but I would have to watch the game through the window. Alabama Georgia is just a game.

Oregon-UW is a Twitter rivalry. Never knew how many issues duck fans had until they start harassing every husky on twitter.

1

u/KCCO1987 NC State Wolfpack 3h ago

Penn State has been in the B1G, South Carolina and Arkansas in the SEC, and FSU in the ACC since the early 90s. Penn State is "unrivaled" and the other three don't have any new rivalries they didn't already have. Nebraska has a contrived rivalry with Iowa.

In short, no. If your school is old your rivalries are old. You can't make new ones. Even if you do, it's based on periods of sustained success on both sides. Not genuine hate. You can have a competitive rivalry with anyone, but you can't have a wake up and hope the school craters in rivalry with anyone.

I would argue FSU and Clemson consider each other newer rivals, but it's not an intense, hate filled rivalry. The other two, correct.

It's definitely a rivalry from Georgia's perspective. Georgia is like that kid who has no originality about him. That kid in school who copied all the cool kids and took credit for other people's work. There's no real tradition between the teams. It only became a popular game because Kirby used to coach at Alabama, and when he left he decided to try and carbon copy what he learned from Saban.

They're called "Alabama Light" for a reason lol. Georgia is a pretty decent, respectable program. But that G on their helmets literally stands for "Generic" lol.

Oh fuck off

We have four natties, second most SEC championships and are top ten overall in wins in cfb history.

This superiority and entitlement is why people don’t like your program and fans

And yet Saban’s successor was not nearly as successful at copying him. Funny how that happens.

I mean sure, but they have to come up organically not be some manufactured BS.

Like we can't just say have UMass and Sac State be Rivals.

The only reason why Georgia and Alabama aren't "rivals" is because of the lack of games played better 1960 and 2017. With how much the fanbases cross over, if the two teams played annually, it would be one of the most notable rivalries in the country. With the new SEC schedule rules, we'll probably see both schools unanimously consider each other to be rivals
