Discussion The media's fandom for Arch Manning is insufferable.

Their lust for this kid makes Texas games borderline unwatchable. Is it as bad as Bill Belichick's Tarheels or Shaduer Sanders? Debatable.

Yeah, this narrative of the media loving Arch is dead and gone. Anyone claiming otherwise isn't paying any sort of attention.

It's about time. He's fucking 44th in the country in QBR right now and going to drop and they sometimes still talk about him like he's getting drafted 1st overall.

11

u/CodyRCantrell Oklahoma • Red River Shootout 2h ago

After the end of last season he was the least accurate QB in the SEC on passes 10 yards or less. He ranked beyond 100 nationally.

Ryen Russillo had a guest on his show just last Monday who said the WRs and coaches are letting down Arch and that he isn't the problem.

Let’s be honest. This comes with a caveat. He’s still getting projected as a first rounder by some draftniks (the rest are saying he should return next season but just because they assume he’ll be draftable for 2028), he’s still in national TV commercials, and the same people critiquing his play will come around next offseason proclaiming “this is the year, he’s gonna be the top overall QB”. Literally just like this past offseason where the media willingly ignored some of the same red flags. They are the last to be honest about anything they’re wrong about.

For as much as people complain about media, it does confuse me how people will still take the media at their word based on the current thing they’re saying. Like any of this overwrites or changes anything they’ve said or will be saying. Just wait for the next good game he has. Anyone who’s watched sports long enough should know what happens when there’s a disappointing media darling. Criticism only lasts as long as the talking heads have to endure it. They’re as committed to consistency as McDonald’s is to the McRib. They don’t think we’re that stupid, but they also don’t think we’re all that smart. It shows long term.

u/HonoluluMaizeandBlue Michigan Wolverines 2h ago

From what I've seen in the post game chats by the media, they are saying that he has big ups and big downs and needs to fix it. I don't think he's had big ups, so that's how much they are still glazing him

4

u/TheNastyCasty Texas Longhorns • Red River Shootout 2h ago

I mean, did you see the 4th down throw on the late TD drive? He absolutely has highs, and shit like that is what they’re talking about. The problem is he does it once or twice per game and then has the awareness of a blind and deaf toddler on every other play.

3

u/HonoluluMaizeandBlue Michigan Wolverines 1h ago

To me, ups and downs fluctuate more than just a few good plays a game, but I take your point

0

u/PersepolisBullseye Texas A&M Aggies 2h ago

I think the issue is that the rare times he makes a not-terrible play, the broadcasts tend to act like that’s what he is, instead of those rare good plays being views as aberrations since his sample is large enough to know he just not good.

I want him benched. Literally stared down an open receiver and held on to the ball and fumbled. Cost us 2 weeks in a row.

11

u/jk137jk Penn State Nittany Lions • Texas Longhorns 2h ago

He needs to be. But I also want to highlight that the offense came back on the field and didn’t have 2 plays planned before the 2 minute warning. You’re facing the clock and instead of prepping the offense with 2-3 plays to get in before the TMW, Manning is waiting for a play call and rushing to snap the ball. Just poor play all around.

5

u/WhoElseButMe_ Texas Longhorns 2h ago

Yeah Sark thinks he’s so smart hiking the ball before the 2 min warning.. he’s not

Let the 2 min warning come and regroup the offense and let’s get some good play calls. Worst case we just need a FG

I have conflicted feelings about Arch. He’s clearly a nepo baby with no business starting at Texas, but I can’t blame him for going to the team he felt gave him the best chance to develop as a quarterback. I also haven’t heard anything bad about his personality.

u/FloggingJonna Arkansas Razorbacks • Miami Hurricanes 2h ago

The training bit I’ll definitely grant. But if you really dig into the weeds a shit ton of D1 kids played at highschools that just thrashed most of their competition. Kids with parents with far less means than Arch will get their kid at the best school with the best team in the area.

4

u/Proverbial_Progress Alabama • North Alabama 1h ago

In my experience this is true even of parents who's children have no higher ability or aspiration than a scholarship to a D2 school.

1

u/FloggingJonna Arkansas Razorbacks • Miami Hurricanes 1h ago

Yeah realistically if they’re a D1 talent a localish high school will somehow make sure the kid has the means to get an apartment in their district. At least that’s how it is where I’ve lived. The big high schools will have middle school “camps” that are essentially city wide recruiting efforts.

But he needs to transfer. It isn’t going to happen at Texas.

2

u/flaginorout 2h ago

Hard to say. He’s certainly had a lot of advantages that got him where he is.

If his name was John Smith and went to a decent 6A public school, he’d probably still play in college. He’s not terrible when compared to the pool of college QBs. He has the tangibles in terms of size and arm strength.

I was watch the JMU game today, and Arch is better than their guy. So he’d be competitive in the Sun Belt. Maybe eventually transfer to a bigger school.

He’s over hyped and his name definitely made a difference. But he’s not god awful like people are making him out to be.

3

u/AutographedSnorkel 2h ago

LMAO, UT will probably pay him $5 million to go away once the Longhorns are eliminated from playoff contention. If he plays next year, it will be at Western Kentucky

Arch Manning is a product manufactured for TV since HS. They chose money over truth, and no one is brave enough to speak up because they would bite the hand that feeds

11

u/Sytherus Texas Longhorns 2h ago edited 2h ago

Texas played like a top 10 offense over the back half of 2025 (6.55 yards per play over last 5 P5 games) without a true #1 receiver and a bad running back room.

Arch isn't the elite NFL prospect we were told, but we have seen him head an effective college offense. Instead of building on that (quick spread passing) offense, we are running the Sark grab bag joystick offense again.

3

u/flaginorout 2h ago

True. I kind feel bad for him. He’s a young man with outrageous expectations placed on him.

But- he’s getting paid and will never have to work again if he doesn’t want to.

13

u/Sytherus Texas Longhorns 2h ago

Sark has been the coach of Texas for 6 years now and has had a top 10 offense once (#6 in 2023 per SP+).

Arch is playing terribly right now, but he's not the reason Texas has gotten to this point. Texas is here because our QB whisperer is unable to develop QBs or coordinate an offense that maximizes it's talent.

2

My experience as a ND fan has taught me that thinking of the media as fans is a category error. They are in the take business. Any topic has a built-in audience and they can tap into it with new takes. Extreme takes get extreme reactions, including expanding the reach for a period of time. The Manning family is just a piñata for them. Notre Dame is a piñata. The Cowboys are a piñata. Just take a swing and the audience shows up.

I've never seen a quarterback so criticized, yet people are so convinced that a cabal is unirghtfully pushing him forward. He is famous. The media talks about famous people. Especially when you are watching a game with him. Duh, they're gonna talk about the quarterback. Y'know, the guy who touches the ball every snap.
