A principal in Nepal received a warning about an approaching flood, canceled classes and evacuated around 900 students to higher ground. The flood swept away the school just minutes later.

An absolute hero! That must’ve been a tough call, knowing he could get backlash.

A hero indeed—risking backlash to do the right thing.

A hero, truly—brave enough to face the storm he helped create.

Wonder if there’s a way to donate to recovery for his school (or reconstructing one)

Charity navigator has several recommendations. The center for disaster philanthropy focuses on long term rebuilding which is the closest thing to what you described. There’s also the rebuild Nepal education foundation but I have no idea how effective they are. They’re completely volunteer run so any money donated goes to the cause.

On a Wednesday morning in August 2026, Rajendra Dawadi was teaching at Tribhuvan Trishuli School in Nuwakot, Nepal, when a staff member warned him that floodwaters were approaching. With about 900 of the school’s 1,643 students present, Dawadi ordered them to run to higher ground. The students were between 11 and 18 years old, while younger children had not yet started classes.
Students who had arrived by bus were told to board again, and Dawadi instructed the drivers to leave quickly. Some students became traumatized and fainted, so teachers transported them to safety on motorbikes. Dawadi later said he believed it was better to lose one day of school than risk hundreds of lives.
About 13 minutes after the first warning, around 9:23 a.m., a surge of water, mud and debris swept through the area. The school was destroyed within seconds, and at least one teacher was missing. The disaster devastated communities across Nepal, with hundreds killed and thousands reported missing. Dawadi, who had once attended the school previously, was devastated to see it destroyed. Although he and his staff saved hundreds of students, he was left wondering how they would rebuild the school and resume classes.
