In 2017, 19-year-old Cayley Mandadi chose a crowded music festival to break up with her boyfriend — she feared being alone with him. Hours later, he rushed her to a rural hospital, unconscious, no pulse, and covered in bruises. When police photographed him, both of his knuckles were red and scabbed.

He’s obviously going to Hell. How could a jury deem him not guilty when she went there to be in public with him because she was scared of him. That they thought there could be any other plausible cause at all is so far beyond me.. I can’t understand it.
This guy will do this again because he believes he got away with it. Hopefully he actually does have an accident before he’s released.

I know of two friends, both women, who have been turned down from being on the jury for serial assault cases. They seem to purposely avoid having any plausibly literate and articulate women on the jury for these cases, for exactly this reason.

I left my abuser at a party after he smashed my new phone.
His mom screamed at me over the phone asking how I could do this.
His dad hugged me and apologized, "I thought I raised him better than this".
I had called the police on him at least 4 times. Every time, they asked him if I deserved it. They only asked me if i was being emotional.
3
u/zzyul 21h ago
He was sentenced to 20 years.
9
u/Raebrooke4 16h ago
The first time it was tried, it was a mistrial because the jury couldn’t agree. “A second panel of 12 jurors decided Howerton’s fate. The jury found him not guilty of murder. It did convict him of aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison, the maximum, a term that Cayley’s family felt was not nearly enough.”
My point is that he was still found not guilty of murder. I don’t understand the mental gymnastics of providing all that evidence, the jury agrees he beat her but not that it was a murder.. even though she told people she was breaking up with him, at the event because she was scared. What else would they want to deem it murder? It’s absurd that he will be out soon if he behaves well in prison.

For all the young women out there, you don't owe these guys a break up in person. Honestly, some men are not lonely enough.
125
u/Clevergirluk 1d ago
Thanks for the awards folks! As other posters have commented, I did mean "these guys" and not all men. She was frightened enough to want a huge crowd present so he wouldn't hurt her. He still did. Women are trained to be polite and not listen to our fears and it gets us killed. So one more time, if he frightens you, or if you get a bad feeling, you don't need to break up in person. I'd rather another man have a bad breakup story and hurt feelings than see another beautiful young life stolen.
20
u/functional_moron 22h ago
Hard agree. If you have any reason to feel like you might be unsafe dont even bother trying to find a "safe space" to breakup. Just ghost or maybe send a text. Sometimes you hear things like "i would never have believed he'd do something like that" well he did. He just didn't display the warning signs. Don't gamble with your safety.
Also, as a man if a woman is really like breaks up with me im gonna just as hurt if she does it in a face to face conversation as I would if it were a text message. The only difference is you didn't put yourself in a potentially dangerous situation. If he's a good man he'll understand even if he is a bit offended.

It's enough men to make it all men.
Every man in the comments saying "not all men" is part of the problem.
They felt called out - because they know who they are.
We shouldn't give them a free pass because it might get a comment downvoted.
Downvote away rapist protectors!

I got my jaw broke in 2016 because I stepped in against a man assaulting a woman, while ALL the women nearby just watched. I recently moved into my workplace (hotel staff accommodation) so my friend could temporarily stay in my studio apartment and immediately get away from her abusive boyfriend. I've walked drunk friends home going miles out of my way to make sure they got home safe. I don't think I have a single friend who would consider me a bad person.
You can tell a character of a person by the company they keep, if you can sit there and say there is not a single positive male in your whole social circle, well then you're either extremely unfortunate and have my sympathies, or, a part of your own problem.

I don’t understand how acknowledging that this is a prevalent problem makes it reasonable to describe this as a universal problem. Saying “all men” do this means you are saying I, as a man, must do this. That is obviously offensive to any decent person who would never act in such a way. I don’t get offended by the idea that women are cautious around men because many men are heinous. I don’t get offended that woman may be cautious around me because many men are heinous. But I do get offended if you tacitly call me a rapist. I think that is entirely apart from the issue of ally-ship.
5
u/Interesting_Worth745 23h ago
First off: rapists and abusers must be punished with the utmost severity.
But how does framing systemic violence as 'all men' protect women?
It just alienates people who want to be part of the solution. What does that framing actually achieve, other than pushing away allies?

Women talking how "its all men" are part of the problem. Dont you see that talling like that justifies wrong behaviour of those monsters? Like real good person will not start to act bad because he thinks "it makes no sense to be good because women will still think Im bad" but its something that bad people will think. They will use it as a way to justify hating on women and also see it as and opportunity. If some women still think all men are bad then they have upper side on the rest - good guys are viewed as bad ones anyway but real bad ones have lack of remorse so they can use it to their advantage.

If someone feels unsafe, they don’t owe that person anything full stop. Don’t talk to them ever again and get a restraining order.
To try and suggest all men, or almost all men, are violent creatures that would do this is insane.

As someone who has had his eyes opened in the last few years to how prevalent “these guys” are - I’m perfectly happy for the term “all men” to be used.
If this offends you, become an advocate and speak out on behalf of women. Keep doing it. Challenge your own beliefs. And maybe one day the default will be to trust us.
Edit: I’m speaking to the men who might be offended - I’m saying they should learn and become advocates for women.
3
2
u/dontyouflap 22h ago
About what percent is "how prevalent"? Half? A quarter? 10%? 1%?
Predators hunt. They go out of their way to blend in, to look safe, and most deliberately victimize multiple people. A predator will often look safer than a normal guy. They will hide what they do around normal guys. Most offenders of serious crimes aren't people who simply need to be reminded that hurting women is wrong. They're not going to listen to calls for change any more than a drug addict is going to stop using because someone told them drugs are bad.
→ More replies (1)2
u/Ginger510 21h ago
I’m not sure I understand the hostility - I’m agreeing with you.
I didn’t think I knew anyone who was affected - turns out I know loads and it’s very sad.
Sure, they blend in - but it’s easier to blend in when the other people actually learn and call it out.
2
u/dontyouflap 21h ago
No hostility here. I agree that people should call out abusive behavior when they see it.
I'm pushing back on the idea that this is primarily a problem of ordinary men failing to recognize or challenge it. Predators are often very deliberate about who sees what. They can and often are charming and completely normal around other men and women while behaving very differently with their victims.
And this is also why I think the "all men" framing is counterproductive. If the problem is a dangerous minority who deliberately hide what they're doing, telling the much larger group that they're all part of the problem just alienates people who would otherwise agree with you. Then the conversation becomes about whether men as a class are guilty instead of about identifying and prosecuting predators, protecting women, and rooting out those who are evil.
So yes, teach people what warning signs look like and call things out when they're visible. I just don't think pushing that men need to hold other men accountable explains nearly as much of the problem as this thread implies. And it instead works against their best interests in favor of spreading divisiveness.

Straight up, then you’re not doing enough. If your personal actions don’t make the women in your life, implicitly feel like you’re an exception to the norm. A norm which puts them in constant harm and danger and anxiety, whether or not they acknowledge it. Then it’s really just on you, man. And you know it’s not literally all men, but it’s enough men for that to be fair to say. And enough men defend those men and equivocate and sit on fences like you. So maybe just get with the positive program and try to fix something rather than bitch about the system for fixing things not being perfect.

The logic behind that statement landed more for me as “you have to assume it’s all men, because it’s enough of them to make every one a liable threat.” It’s an extreme take and lacking nuance, but sadly, the sentiment rings true for many women and girls.
3
u/Delicious_Aside_9310 12h ago
I mean, I think that take is defensible. You have to act like anyone could be a threat. Totally reasonable, you acknowledge not everyone Is but also that those who are can be hard to recognise. But that’s not the same as saying everybody is a threat, which is what a lot of the comments are doing. I think it’s pretty fair to take offense to being tacitly called a rapist and abuser.

They literally feel entitled to interactions. When they're lonely they make it everyone's problem. Loneliness rates are actually pretty similar between men and women, it's just that for women they might get a cat and get called a crazy cat lady but for men they might end up a family anihilator.

"Why don't women in abusive relationships just leave?"
THIS is why. This issue is far more complex than people assume it is. it's easier to blame the victim rather than consider the nuance of how difficult/dangerous it is to leave.
The vast majority of abusers do not start out abusive. In most cases it is a slow burn after a period of love-bombing, manipulation, and isolation. People do not CHOOSE to date an abuser. This can happen to anyone.
Edit: thanks for the awards! I'm really glad this is resonating with people. I'll leave some resources.

The most deadly time for an abuse victim is when they try to leave, by the way. As a rebuttal against "why didn't she just leave?"
E:And most abusers don't become fully abusive until they have their victim trapped. "Red flags" are ways individuals have tried to notice behavior patterns that can be abusive, but guess what? They're as imperfect as the humans who notice them.

I agree this is very complicated but I think there are signs. I know its anecdotal one of my good friends started dating a guy. I met him and within 10 minutes my wife said, "he's not a good guy" it took me a couple hours but then when we share with her that he is dangerous she wouldnt hear it. Fast forward a year or so and she has to call out of work because he beat her up to the point that she was in the hospital. I know she didnt choose to date an abuser but her entire friend group could see the signs.
Before my wife and I started dating I met one of her exes and only spent a few minutes with him and had him flagged. I told her after we got together that I bet he was a wall puncher and she asked how I knew. Idk but its a type. She then told me how other got into an arguement and he destroyed their living room.

I agree, its one of the reasons I am suspicious of age gap relationships. I think older guys tend to be smarter about their manipulation.
8
u/Strict-Profit7624 1d ago
I agree. Obviously it depends on the age gap, like if it's 27 and 33 it's totally fine but yeah, younger people tend to be more easily manipulated. But again, it can happen to anyone really.
12
u/Bitter-Picture5394 1d ago
Right, the gap matters less the older the younger partner is, and even starts reversing. If a 19 year old is dating a 27 year old, I'm concerned for the 19 year old. If a 35 year old is dating a 50 year old I'm not worried for either even though their gap is larger because the 35 year old has had well over a decade of being an adult. But if a 40 year old is dating a 90 year old, I'm concerned for the 90 year old.

I think the fact he drove her to get medical help was enough to provide reasonable doubt that he intended to kill her, which makes murder significantly harder to prove than manslaughter. He did get convicted of a lesser charge and the judge gave him 20 years for it at least
34
u/BorgQuingus67 1d ago
Unfortunately, the big difference is intent, if he only intended to beat her senseless and not kill her it's just manslaughter. It's fucked up, but he still got 20 years for it.

10
u/Disastrous_tea_555 1d ago
What did he mean to do? Paralyse her? Traumatise her for life? Make her live in fear for her physical safety? Teach her a lesson for rejecting him?
What was the intent? It wasn’t to kill her so then what was it?
7
u/SmileParticular9396 1d ago
I can only speculate as I’m not an abusive piece of shit, but my guess is he wanted to teach her a lesson? Punish her? Hurt her? There are a million reasons why humans beat on other humans and murder isn’t always the intent.
5
u/Disastrous_tea_555 23h ago
My point is the intent to cause harm can ruin someone’s life so much that they are not really living anyway. A head injury that means someone now requires round the clock care to feed themselves or go to the toilet should be treated the same as a murder imo

The amount of mental gymnastics to act like in this very prevalent and documented epidemic of violence against women, the real victims are "innocent" men being grouped with perpetrators, because even though it's highly likely that they're friends with or know men that spew casual harmful rhetoric and/or abuse against women, they shouldn't be shamed for that because it's just the way he is, and calling him out would put them in an uncomfortable position, and instead when he commits sexual assault or domestic violence, women will be in the wrong for acting like they're part of the problem because all they did was stand on the sidelines and it wasn't their fault.

Women make false rape claims. Even one is too many. Women need to hold each other accountable.
See i did it too

u/Ok_Tank5977 1d ago
And yet the number of rapes perpetrated by men against women, other men and children far exceeds that of false rape allegations.

Ok dude Jesus Christ. If you want us to hold each other accountable then I need you to understand that your comment IS a false rape claim and it’s being used to fuel a divide and animosity.
I have no idea why you thought to say that or what you’re trying to prove but, my guy, we need to think before we speak

You do realise this kind of rhetoric really turns men against the cause. I’m a man, a decent man, never stole, never got violent, I support women and equal rights for all. So when you say even one is too fucking many why do single out men as a group here? Isn’t a violent person of any gender or race or group bad? If you frame it like that you get everyone to come with you. If you frame it as all men are monsters you alienate the good guys out there and it really backfires.

Why? Really think hard about what you are saying.
You want every man to blame themselves when any man around the world does somethign wrong.
You are being ridiculouys.

“I feel so violent violent fuckin with that ecstasy”
- bone thugs n harmony
MDMA can have the opposite reaction in some scenarios. This dude was already violent. Breaking up with him while rolling was a bad idea. He lacked even more control than he already lacked.
Do not upset someone while they are rolling and think the drug will keep them happy. It wont. I personally have experienced this while rolling when I got locked in a room. It drove me crazy and what resulted was ummm bad. They thought it was funny. I uncontrollably attacked after breaking free. I was happy until they locked me in a room.
ETA: im not trying to victim blame. Dude sounds unhinged. Im trying to educate people that MDMA will NOT pacify an enraged person. It will do the opposite.

u/InternationalSpace59 1d ago
YES! I had an opposite reaction with drugs too and nobody believes me when I say that it can have opposite effects.

It is also exactly the type of “argument” racists would use when bringing up their “crime statistics”
How they don’t see that is ridiculous. Literally just substitute the word “man” with anything else and you can easily see how flaws that argument is unless you’re straight up just a misandrist

Infant babies could say this very thing… but about women.
FBI stats show that women, mothers, commit 75.9% of neonaticide. A lot of women are baby-killers. And not just any babies. Their own babies.
Maybe men should also constantly bring this up against yall misandrist baby-killers.
3
u/Living_Ad_7143 1d ago
Ok. What’s the percentage though? Like, it 1 in 4 women are victims of rape/abuse. Specifically for neonaticide, the numbers are anywhere from 0.7-9 in 100,000. Then we have infanticide and filicide, which men commit in larger numbers.

u/Junior_Book7332 1d ago

Why are people making this men vs women and who’s the worst. This is the first time I even heard of this particular case and it’s horrific to read about it. Murderers are murderers regardless of gender. Victims are victims regardless of gender.
I wish Birchum would have called the police or intervened after seeing Howerton force her in the car.
If you see something, say something.

Because some people just enjoy division
Here I thought expecting everyone to unite and agree that this person is a piece of human garbage. Instead it’s now a platform for “all men bad”
It’s lost on some people that misandry is just as bad as misogyny. And I’m sure that’s a controversial take to some people 🙄
4
u/hellraiserxhellghost 1d ago
Misandry doesn't exist lmao. Misogyny actually kills women like in this story, misandry is just men crying online about hurt feelings. This thread and you aren't helping.

Your point-blank dismissal only proves him correct.
Let’s find your double standards. Did you know…
75% of murdered babies are killed by women. Usually their very own mother. Women are baby killers.
Babies choose the bear.
“Not all moms, but it’s always a mom.” - say the dead voiceless babies
2
u/Proper-Raise-1450 18h ago
75% of murdered babies are killed by women.
Murders are always disproportionately committed by the people most likely to be around the victim, women do more care of babies means women do more murders of babies.
5
u/Astralglamour 1d ago edited 1d ago
It’s ‘not all men’ but 90% of all violence is perpetrated by men. Men are women’s greatest threat. It’s not about sowing division it’s straight facts. If you have a problem with that as a man then start confronting other men instead of blaming women for what men choose to do to them.
If women were taught to walk away at the first sign of disrespect/controlling behavior rather than being told “it’s because he cares” and men were taught they don’t own women they’re attracted to or have the right to harm them- perhaps the statistics would change.

Women are five times more likely to be murdered by a domestic or intimate partner.
Every 10 minutes, a woman is murdered by her domestic partner
But tell me again, how miSaNdry is the real issue and modern feminism has gone too far lol

Paramedic Cheryl Lane was driving an ambulance up to the hospital in Luling when a black car appeared behind her, honking and flashing its lights. Before she stepped out, she saw a man hollering and screaming. When she opened the door, he told her that his girlfriend was not breathing and that he needed help.
Looking inside the car, Lane saw Cayley exposed, with her pants and other clothing on the floorboard near her feet. Cayley had multiple bruises, and Lane began CPR. Other emergency medical workers told investigators that they realized immediately how serious the situation was, noting that Cayley was nearly naked and had no pulse.
