In May 2020, 24-year-old Andre Rebelo, a crypto trader, took his mother’s life to claim over $1 million from life insurance policies in her name to maintain his social media influencer lifestyle.

Disgusting
Also, why is everyone here arguing with each other? We should be united in condemnation of the asshole who off killed his own mother to collect on her life insurance policy. Whether it was because he was just an ass or because his girl wanted the latest lip fillers is immaterial in the grand scheme.

Horrible person. But can investigators really just leave recording devices in your home after a search?

In the US they'd need a warrant for a wiretap. They'd have to show a lot of evidence to a judge to show they had cause to do it.
This was in Australia though, they may have different rules, might be easier to do.

Wasnt the whole thing in the US that they actually dont give a fuck and spy on their own citizens whenever they want?

It's the difference between the local cops who investigate crimes like murder and the Feds who investigate terrorism and shit.
The people who get to spy on everyone are the Feds.

I always wondered why/how it’s so easy to get life insurance policies on adults who are unaware of said policies. I understand in some circumstances where the adult with then policy can’t do it on their own.
But in cases like this story, the adult with the policy was fully capable of doing the policy themselves. So how can someone else get a policy for another person and that person has no idea they have a life insurance policy for themselves?

If someone cant do it on their own what type of payment are you expecting. They cant be earning anything to insure and are likely already much higher risk of death. There is no legitimate reason for a policy to exist in that case.

My point is why does it seem so easy for person A to get an insurance policy on person B, with person B having no knowledge of said policy?

Yes I understand and agree with that. I just dont think there is any single circumstance where its necessary for someone to be able to take out a life insurance policy without the life being insured consent.

Yeah that makes sense.
It also baffles me that people like this guy don’t think it’s suspicious to buy a policy for someone and then that someone mysteriously dies shortly after said policy is created. I’d imagine that’s the first thing investigators would look into?

What a piece of shit.
And for the record, I don't buy that his wife has nothing to do with this.

He is responsible for his own actions here. It's weird that you are even assuming a girlfriend has anything to do with his decision to murder

His wife was the only one who was bringing in money.

Well then the title mislead me, said he did it to keep his lifestyle up

From what I gather from the article, he wasn’t buying her anything. She brought in all the money and he earned nothing. If anything, he was a kept man.

So hes even dumber for doing something he didnt even need to do, he didnt even need the money.

Yeah HE is a little betch who, as her “manager” did this because he’s a lazy moron.
SHE was the only one bringing in money “thousands per post and brand deals”
Absent any proof that is not in this article, your comment is giving off “it’s all a woman’s fault - even when there’s no proof and a man perpetrated the crime” incel vibes.

May 25, 2020 started like any normal day. That morning at 10 o'clock, Colleen drove Fabian to his job at a supermarket. She was supposed to pick him up when his shift ended at 2 in the afternoon.
That same morning, Andre had plans to get lunch with Gracie and some of her cousins who were visiting. But sometime in the late morning, he just disappeared. He did not tell anyone where he was going. Between 11:10 and 11:34, Gracie tried calling him twelve times. She sent him a bunch of angry text messages asking where he was. He did not answer any of them.
