We know that conversations about immigration whether about immigrants, refugees, or people who are here without official documentation can spark a wide range of opinions. Whatever your personal views may be, everyone is a human being first, and in the United States all people have fundamental constitutional rights and deserve to be treated with dignity and respect.
This thread exists to share resources, information, and support for immigrants and their families living in the Chicago suburbs. Whether you’re directly affected, you have friends or loved ones who are, or you simply want to stay informed and help others, you’re welcome here.
Below you’ll find know-your-rights guidance, legal and community resources, and links to trusted organizations. Please use this space to share updates, ask questions, or contribute additional resources that may help our neighbors.
If you have questions, updates, or local referrals (legal aid, outreach groups, clinics, “know your rights” workshops) please reply below or message the mods, and we’ll integrate them into this post.
1. Know Your Rights (Basics)
This is not legal advice. Always consult with a qualified immigration attorney when possible.
You have certain constitutional rights regardless of status — e.g. the right to remain silent, the right to legal counsel (though in immigration courts, the government does not provide a lawyer)
Ask for an attorney, don’t sign anything you don’t understand, and try to have someone present if interacting with authorities
Keep critical documents (ID, immigration papers, birth certificates, etc.) in a safe but accessible place
Prepare a “what to do if detained” plan in advance (emergency contacts, power of attorney, who to call)
Train yourself and your family on responses to ICE, CBP, or other raids or check-ins
Below is a curated list of organizations offering low-cost or pro bono legal services, referrals, or community support in or around the Chicago suburbs. (If your suburb or county has others, please comment/reply so we can add them.)
Because each suburb or county may have different offerings:
Check your county’s “Health & Human Services / Social Services” department website for immigrant or refugee services
Local nonprofits, faith-based groups, community centers often host “legal clinics” or immigration workshops
Libraries and adult education centers sometimes host “Know Your Rights / immigration clinics” with pro bono attorneys
School districts: Some districts have protocols or contacts for immigrant families — it can help to ask school social workers or parent liaison offices
Coalitions & networks: Community navigators or organizers often help connect people across municipalities
If you’re a resident of Suburb X (for example, Naperville, Schaumburg, Aurora, Waukegan, Joliet, etc.), and know of any support offerings comment below and we can add them to this section.
4 Emergency / Special Situations
Detention / deportation emergencies: OCAD has a support hotline: 1-855-435-7693 (also used by ICIRR’s Family Support Network) Organized Communities
Rapid response / legal standby networks: Some coalitions maintain volunteer legal “on call” teams
When someone is detained: Try to document as much as possible (name, detention facility, date, time) and connect with legal counsel immediately
“Know Your Rights” training workshops: Many community groups periodically hold trainings; tracking them (via social media, local nonprofits) is helpful
Consular & national resources: E.g. for some nationalities, “ConsulApp Contigo” is a useful tool (Mexico, etc.) Illinois Head Start Association
5. Moderation/Posting Guidelines & Disclaimers
This post is intended as a community resource, not legal counsel
Please do not post legal advice that can’t be verified by a licensed attorney
Users commenting/posting with the intent to troll, insult, create panic/harm, or be a nuisance to others will be permanently banned
Any added resources should be public, reputable groups (non-discrimination, proven track record)
If you know of an organization that has changed status, ceased services, or is not trustworthy, please message the mods/comment below so we can keep updates accurate
Users seeking urgent legal aid should prioritize contacting established legal service providers as listed above
I had a really funny moment (I'm laughing about it) outside Trader Joe's in Downers Grove off Ogden today. I was leaving with my cart, two bags and some flowers. Thought it would be fun to be like a kid and hold myself up on the shopping cart while it rolled toward my car.
Yah, def not enough goods in the cart to counter balance my height/bodyweight. Went down hard, spilled several items out of my bags. Crushed some of the bouquet of flowers.
One of those moments where I hope the staff goes back and watches the parking lot video because I'm sure it's funny as hell watching a 6'4" tall dude completely wipe out.
I'm ok, maybe lost a few more brain cells, but had a brief moment of fun laughing at myself.
And shoutout to the TJ employee that checked on my eggs (none broke somehow) and me.

Mine would be 16th street starting in North Riverside. You can take it all the way down to Ogden. It’s close to major roads (22nd and Roosevelt) and means it’s close to highways. Most of the time it’s faster than taking 22nd and/or Roosevelt in that area.
Hello! Looking for a trail or maybe an area to run in the mornings? It’s so dark now that it’s fall, curious of any park or well lit trail that would be god to run?
Is there a website or does anyone know of some good neighborhoods to drive by at night with Halloween decorations? I saw a really cool one on my feed in Naperville but no address in the comments.
I would love to take my family around for some!
Before I settle on this area, what do I need to know? I want the good, the bad, and the ugly. I’m in my late 30s, happily married, with three children (one off to college next year, one starting high school, and one in elementary). We’re Black professionals in the education field, the area seems diverse, with shopping up and down 59, and many malls within driving distance. The school district looks solid. What’s the good, bad, and ugly? Anything I could be aware of? Any major changes coming to the area, etc?
Hello everyone! This is my first year in the Chicago suburbs and I would like to go to a haunted house this year! Ive been to a couple in Iowa that were lackluster (scream acres) so I’m hoping for a better experience. After doing my research I’ve narrowed my search between The Massacre, Hells Gate, or Dungeon of Doom. The one thing I want to prioritize in my experience is the scare factor where my hearts pumping from actual fearful discomfort and not just from my social anxiety.
To the people that have gone to either of these three which one would you recommend?
To preface I want to note that I understand pumpkin patches in general are aimed more at kids so no need to comment that. Wife want's to go to Bengstons over the weekend as she saw how popular it was on Tiktok and I just want to know if there are enjoyable things to do as it is one of the more expensive admissions I have seen for pumpkin patches. Seems like they mostly have small fair rides for young children. Don't want to sound like a buzzkill as I like these places and getting apple cider donuts etc. just wanting to understand the hype of driving an hour for this one instead of going to Goeberts or Richardsons.
Has anyone found and care to share a good detour to access westbound I-90 from IL-53/I-290 during the afternoon rush? With the current construction it can easily take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour just to get from Higgins Rd to I-90. I love how the electronic signs always say something like 15 minutes to I-90. It's more like 15 minutes to the end of the line to get onto I-90! I've tried both getting off at IL-390 and jogging north on Roselle Rd. and getting off at Biesterfield Rd. and jogging over to Meacham Rd. There are so many traffic lights though that any time saved is questionable. Thanks in advance!
Early 30s M, liberal leaning, divorced a while ago and work full remote so I can live pretty much anywhere. Most of my family and friends are spread West/Southwest so that’s my preference but I’m open to anywhere. I did well on selling my house so budget-wise I’d be willing to pay for anywhere that’s worth its. I just need space for my hobby gear/stuff and want some quiet which is why I’m not considering the city right now. I’m pretty social and eventually would want to date again so hoping there is a suburb that is amenable to this lifestyle.

Join Chibots, the Chicago area robotics group, for our next online meeting. Whether you're a seasoned builder, a curious beginner, or just robot-curious, you're welcome here.
This meeting will follow our usual loose format:
A bit of club business (keeping it short, we promise)
Show-and-tell — bring a project, a part, a problem, or just pictures
Lots of open discussion with fellow robotics enthusiasts
No formal agenda yet, and no pressure to present anything. Come to share, come to listen, come to ask questions — all are welcome.

So, I've been getting a kick out of all the maps being posted on r/whereidlive debating what the midwest is and who belongs in it and I thought I'd drop a similar question to my Chicago Suburbs family here and see what they consider the North Shore to be. My personal opinion is only the cities directly on the lake can be considered "North Shore". So I don't consider Glenview, Northbrook and Northfield to be "North Shore".
For the record, I don't live in any of these communities so this post isn't meant to be mean spirited or exclusionary, just a fun debate and peoples thoughts on it because on know this term can has wildly different interpretations around here.
I have a strong sewer gas-type smell coming from my basement, and my plumber thinks it could be a dead rat or rodent. I’ve called a few pest control companies, but none of them offer dead rodent locating and removal.
Has anyone dealt with this or know of a service that can actually locate and remove it? Appreciate any recommendations!
Need some major help recovering from sciatica / low back pain going on for a few months. Did PT through a hospital system that just handed me printed out exercises.
Looking for 1 on 1 care near Aurora. Avoiding chains like ATI or similar places. TIA.
