Study Chinese (学中文) What have been your experiences tutoring Chinese on tutor dot com?

It seems like tutor dot com has now added Chinese as an option to select on-demand tutoring (ex: sessions don't need to be scheduled anymore, can just wait for a student to join)

I'm not good enough to teach yet but am working on it

History (历史) In-game koi VS the chunky koi of Baotu Spring, Jinan🤣🤣🤣

Thumbnail gallery
6 Upvotes

Here’s a quick lore detail that made me appreciate this area way more. Those fish are koi (jǐnlǐ / 锦鲤), also known as “brocade carp” — not goldfish. They’re two completely different fish. There’s an old Chinese legend about a koi that swims upstream and leaps over the Dragon Gate, a waterfall on the Yellow River. If it makes the jump, it transforms into a dragon. It became a classic metaphor for hard work, perseverance, and rising above your circumstances, and was later closely associated with passing the imperial examinations. So that “Koi Luck” loot buff isn’t just a cute fish icon. The reference is actually pretty clever. In-game, the koi are graceful and poetic, gliding through the mist like little strokes of calligraphy. At the real Baotu Spring, though,?They're absolutely enormous. Overfed, chunky swimming logs that immediately cruise over to the railing the moment someone shows up with snacks. Zero elegance. Zero poetry. Just pure, unstoppable appetite.

Study Chinese (学中文) After 3000+ one-on-one lessons, this is why I became a full-time Chinese tutor

General Culture (文化) A widely known internet culture in Chinese:"Lao(牢=jail)"

The fire wall blocks the connection between Chinese internet and world internet. So may you can just hear some traditional cultures, but there are many morden cultures are used widely in daily talk,"Lao"is one of them.

"Lao"is“牢”,it refer to "jail".This culture begin with Kobe Bryant,he was called “老大(Lao da)” by his Chinese fans,it means"boss"or"leader".Because a news showed he may have some relationship with a rape action, someone angry with him and called him“牢大(Lao da,yes, they have same pronunciation)”then this culture was bron as a meme.“牢”is jail,it can make life hard,so this meme then used to describe weakness things, and someone even PS Kobe's head on these weakness things and add Kobe's voice like"Man!What can I say, manba out."so that, this culture got more connection with Kobe.

This culture then had a long term evolution, but I don't wanna to say all of these in one go,if your wanna to know more your can ask for it under this post.

Study Chinese (学中文) Beijing or Shanghai?

Hi everyone,

I’m planning to study Chinese in China for around 5 months in Spring 2027, and I’m deciding between Tsinghua in Beijing and Fudan in Shanghai.

I’m mainly wondering which city would be better in terms of student life, socializing, meeting new people, and the overall experience.

I’d also love to travel around China and visit nearby Asian countries.

If you’ve lived or studied in either city, which would you choose and why?

General Culture (文化) I created a short introduction to Kung Fu for people curious about Chinese martial arts

I've spent 25+ years studying traditional Chinese martial arts, including Hung Gar, and one thing I've come to appreciate is how much there is to learn beyond the physical techniques.

I recently created an educational video series called So, What Is Kung Fu? to introduce people to the subject.

The series explores different styles, stances, forms, and what Kung Fu training actually involves. It's designed for people who are curious about Chinese martial arts but may not have access to a school or know where to begin.

My background combines traditional martial arts practice, competitive fighting, and academic study in sport psychology. I enjoy making complex subjects easier to understand without adding unnecessary mysticism.

If you're interested, you can watch the series here:

Study Chinese (学中文) [Self-promotion] Everyday Mandarin at home: keeping the context behind a phrase

A small example of why context matters: 下课 (xià kè) is a class ending; 放学 (fàng xué) is school finishing for the day; 放假 (fàng jià) is having a holiday or break. 今天几点放学? asks what time school finishes today; 什么时候放假? asks when the break starts.

I build Lingo Bear, an AI-assisted English–Mandarin web tool. I am offering the existing Explore Pro monthly plan to adults who repeatedly need explanations of everyday phrases at home: US$19/month plus checkout tax, automatically renewing until canceled. This is a paid product offer, not a research interview.

What you get: enter your own text/photo/voice question, generate a contextual bilingual explanation, explore connected learning cards, and revisit what you saved. An account, history and saving favorite cards are already available on Free; the paid capability is own-question generation and deeper exploration. Fair-use, rate and safety limits apply.

Read the prepared example without an account, including school clubs vs hobby classes vs tutoring: https://app.lingo-bear.com/for/bilingual-families . It demonstrates the format; it is not a private-generation trial. AI can make mistakes and needs adult review. This is not tutoring, a structured course or an app for children to use alone. No fluency or educational outcome is guaranteed.

To purchase through this offer: reply “monthly” with one non-sensitive routine you want to use it for. I will confirm fit and these terms in writing before you pay, without a sales call or a multi-day interview. Then use https://app.lingo-bear.com/pricing and choose Monthly Explore Pro; check that checkout says US$19 billed monthly plus tax, not the annual plan.

Delivery and acceptance: access should activate after successful payment. Within 24 hours of your purchase message, I will help check that you can ask your own question, receive a relevant bilingual answer, open a connected card and return to saved history/favorites. You decide whether that agreed workflow was delivered; payment alone is not acceptance.

If access or the agreed core workflow fails, contact bigkey.cn@gmail.com. I will respond within 24 hours; if I cannot provide the agreed core value, I will arrange a full refund of the first charge. This is a remedy for failure to deliver, not an unrestricted free trial. You can cancel renewal in the billing portal; normal cancellation keeps access through the paid period. No custom development or extra support fee is included. Please do not post children's identities, private messages, photos or school details.
