Hi. At the end of this video the guy talks about complaints about this device. Could you skip to the last part and let me know the downsides he’s talking about for this?

Hello, I'm writing a story set in what's basically fantasy China, and I'd like help naming a character. Hope this is the right place for that! I'd like a gender neutral name including 燕 (Yàn), that ideally somehow implies thruthfulness or sincerity. No surname necessary. Thank you for your time! :)

燕允,允 pronounced “yun”which means promise、sincere、concent、faithful

Thank you so much!

and you can also use “燕”as family name, like “燕 XX”、“燕允”。or you can add a family name front of “燕允”like “王燕允”“易燕允”

I am making something for my SO and would like to translate "we'll hold hands all the way home" to chinese!

执子之手,与子偕老。

我们将携手同归
it's a simple way, can be use alone. (in a card or a blessing word)
“all the way” means keep doing this (hod hands) , if u write something more, here is the direct way:
我们回家的路上一直手牵着手

I've asked help to make a Chinese name before, but I have more concrete options this time. Hopefully it's ok to ask again!
After looking through lots of different sources, I've narrowed it down to the following top contenders:
1) 黎斐霁
2) 黎斐皑

Do these sound ok? Are they feminine--sounding enough? Which one is better?

Or, if they both sound weird, how's 黎霏葉?

The name seems fine, but it feels too complicated. In China, when choosing a name, people usually consider how easy it is to write and pronounce. So you might consider choosing a simpler name.
名字本身是很好的,但是写起来太复杂。在中国,起名字的时候,人们会考虑到它是否好读好写。所以你可以考虑一些写法相对简单的名字。

I haven't read your previous posts, so I'm not sure why you chose these two. If I had to choose between "黎斐霁" and "黎斐皑", I'd lean towards "斐霁". "斐" comes from the proverb "君子豹变,其文斐也", meaning a person's literary talent and inner qualities improve. "霁" means clear skies and sunshine after rain, and also implies an open and honest heart. "皑" means the whiteness of frost and snow. The problem is that "斐皑" sounds very awkward when pronounced together, because "斐" is in the third tone, and the fourth tone of the second character would be better.

我没有看你之前的帖子,所以不确定你为什么选了这 2 个,如果从“黎斐霁” 和 “黎斐皑”中挑选,我倾向斐霁。“斐”,出自君子豹变,其文斐也,表达一种文采、内涵变好的意思。“霁”,光风霁月,和雨后天晴的意思,也有心胸坦荡的意思;“皑,霜雪之白也”,问题是,斐皑 连在一起读非常拗口,因为斐是三声,第二个字四声会更好一些。

Thank you so much for your answer! The short answer is that when my parents chose my name, they chose one with the syllable "phi", because my dad's a mathmatician and φ (phi) is used as a symbol in mathmatics (e.g. the golden ratio). I work as a 2D artist, and since art also uses the golden ratio, I thought this would be a cute little connection to my original name :)

When I looked up φ's transliteration, "斐" came up, so that's how I chose that. I wouldn't have minded to just keep it at just "黎斐", but from a quick Google search, that seems to be a predominately male name? Or, at the very least, the name of a football player 😅 Since I'm a woman, I thought it'd be better to add a second character. I chose both "霁" and "皑" because I liked their meanings, and they both felt poetic to me, especially combined with "斐 :)

If you have any suggestions for another character to add instead of "霁" or "皑" (and it's not too much trouble), I'd love to hear them :)

If you're not fixated on the character "斐" and prefer the syllable "phi," perhaps you could change "斐" to "菲."。
"黎菲" is a very feminine name.

That's a good suggestion! I think it over some ^^ Also, thanks for all your replies to my questions 😄

how do you say “larp” in chinese? is there a slang word for that?

2

u/Finder_hao May 27 '26

If you're referring to "histrionic personality disorder," then "装" is the Chinese equivalent. However, it's important to note that "装" generally carries a negative connotation in Chinese. Is larp also negative?

2

u/thehollowk8 May 27 '26

yea it is negative

1

u/thehollowk8 May 27 '26

how would you say “he is such an attention seeker!”

2

u/Finder_hao May 27 '26

If you want to express a negative meaning, then it's "他好装" or “他太装了” hahaha.

If you don't want to express negative feelings, you should say, "这家伙总爱人前显圣"

1

u/thehollowk8 May 27 '26

thank you !! hahaha

1

u/a_dragondream Native May 27 '26

Something similar that also holds the same casual connotations is “装”,which can be used as both as adjective and verb.

However larp probably wont translate directly very well into chinese because it really assumes a very specific cutural context.

1

u/InTheAsh May 26 '26

Can't find an abbreviated version, but 'live-action role playing game' is 真人角色扮演遊戲 (source: wikipedia). The wikipedia page seems to simply use "LARP" for short.

2

u/thehollowk8 May 26 '26

no i don’t mean the role playing term, i mean the “being performative” term. it is an internet slang used as a way to call out inauthenticity online. like a "try hard" or "performative," and is sometimes deployed as an insult toward people seen as faking identity.

i was wondering if chinese slang has a term for that

2

u/InTheAsh May 26 '26

Ah sorry, I didn't know it was used that way as well ^

1

u/thehollowk8 May 26 '26

lol don’t worry it was just for a joke. i know 作秀 but i don’t actually know how to say that “someone is being performative”

1

u/CAESARLXXVIII May 26 '26

where do i even start with learning 😭

1

u/Additional_Deer_5212 May 26 '26

Is there a good website or app for learning pinyin?

1

u/Finder_hao May 27 '26

Do you have any good methods? As a Chinese , I'm very curious about how everyone learns Chinese.

1

u/tataazd May 25 '26

I'm planning on asking the girl I'm going out with to be my girlfriend. She is Chinese and I want to make something special. How can I say it? I've seen many examples online so I am unsure about which one is the right one.

Thank you so much! And if this helps, she is from Shanghai - maybe there is a different way to say it there?

wǒ xǐ huān nǐ (我喜欢你) (i like you) is a pretty standard love confession in chinese cultures

However, don't stress too much over it, you being willing to put in the effort will definitely translate your feelings the best across to her.

People from Shanghai may or may not speak Shanghainese (a branch of the Wu dialect). You may ask her which dialect she speaks, as casual daily small talk, and then go from there.

well,we can't give out a chinese name only according to the pronounciation since it has many possibilities.
Furthermore, misspelling(use the wrong character) someone's name is considered impolite.
if u want to send a gift, how about just ask him/her Chinese name, a "how to write" question is always welcome.

ahh ok! thank you for the help!

How is 古青玉 as a full Chinese name?

I’ve been studying since I was young (although am very out of practice now, hence the English, sorry!), and have been called 小玉 throughout my lessons in childhood, but I never got an actual full name until now. I ask because even though my teacher is native and the name is sourced directly from my actual English name (half phonetically, half meaning-wise), I worry it sounds pretentious, or too much like a fictional character…can anybody tell me the feeling the name gives off?

2

u/ToeOpening9961 Native May 23 '26

古青玉
It's alright, not that strange. It just sounds a bit old-fashioned, i don't mean it's not outdated, but rather has a certain charm.

1

u/sadmium May 24 '26

Thank you! I’ll be sticking with it, then! I appreciate your help
