花开不并百花丛,独立疏篱趣未穷。宁可枝头抱香死,何曾吹落北风中。

this is a poem, but I can only read 80% of the characters since its in old school flowy font. I recommend posting to r/translator quite a few people there are good with these =)

A few weeks ago I wrote a small question in Arabic at one of the chalk boards in our uni in Europe. I don't exactly remember what I worte but it was something along the lines of "Do you think they will come/see?" It was completely random and had no real intention behind it except to see if somebody would react to it. Apparently somebody did, but my question was erased and only a faint view of the answer was left and ChatGPT is not able to read it. Would appreciate if somebody tells me what it says.

Kan moedertaalspreker dit vertalen? Ik wil dit als tattoo en wil zeker weten dat het betekent wat ik denk dat het betekent: 相信命運

Dankjewel!

'相信命運' can mean various things; if you want to convey one specific meaning, you need to add more words to clarify it. I recommend visiting r/translator; that way, nothing gets lost in automatic translations between English, Chinese, and so on. Someone knowing your language and someone knowing chinese can both verify it translates accurately.

'相信命運' kan verschillende dingen betekenen; als je één specifieke betekenis wilt overbrengen, moet je meer woorden toevoegen om dit te verduidelijken. Ik raad je aan om naar r/translator te gaan; zo gaat er niets verloren bij automatische vertalingen tussen Engels, Chinees, enzovoort. Iemand die jouw taal spreekt en iemand die Chinees kent, kunnen de vertaling dan beide verifiëren.

I'm trying to pick a name in Chinese and make sure it sounds natural. My name is Ezra.

I would pick a surname/family name as well, right? My last name begins with "Cam" and so I thought a surname that sounds like "kan" would make the most sense. I found the family name 阚 kàn in a list.

And I found the name 奕泽 yìzé on a name site that is supposed to mean great/bright + moist/grace/brilliance. I'm a water sign... and my name Ezra phonetically in Chinese would be 以斯拉 yǐsīlā , so I thought it was fitting.

So 阚奕泽 , does it look or sound weird? Is this a name someone would actually have? The only problem I guess is that 奕泽 seems to be the name for the Toyota IZOA....so i don't know if that makes the name kind of funny? 😅

It is a coincidence that the Middle Chinese pronunciation of 闞 is reconstructed as *kʰam.

奕泽 is normal but maybe the 阚 is a bit rare as a last name. Maybe 凯?

阚奕泽 is fine as a name, it is gender nuetral. I don't know if anybody has this exact combo as a native chinese but it probably is out there.  Neither name nor surname is weird.

I am learning mandarin and found this dubbing of gravity falls: gravity falls My question is what does Mavle say at 2:40? To me it sounds like "大家看了", but as far as I know that would mean "everyone is looking at it". However, that doesn't make a lot of sense and I know in the original she is saying "He is looking at it!".

u/sam77889 Native Jul 23 '26

他在看了,他在看了

1

u/0rangeBlaze Jul 24 '26

But wouldn't that be "他看了"? Because I can definitely hear something between "他" and "看".

1

u/sam77889 Native Jul 24 '26

The something you hear is 在

It’s not 他看了 because as you said, the original is “he is looking”. That translates to 他在看了.

他看了 mean “he looked”.

Oh, that makes sense. Thank you for the help!
