Discussion Whalefall. Hit or miss?

Post image

I've just watched Whalefall, and was looking forward to it after reading the book.

Has anyone else read the book also? I'd be interested in your comparisons. Imo the book portrays the story better.

If you haven't read the book, your views would be appreciated too.

I think this might be a very ' Marmite' movie, as in you'll either love it or hate it.

Discussion This series is ass.

Post image
0 Upvotes

hear me out, this series was ass. Why? Two reasons, one:

Cus it explained too much about Pennywise. And that's not a wrong thing by itself, but it gave him weaknesses. It explained when he attacks, why he attacks, when he stops, his whole pattern, why he can't leave derry, and gives him the big weakness of getting defeated by a dagger. That's shit. The first movie was awesome, cus Pennywise is an evil entity and the only way to defeat it is by not being feared by it. That's it, that's all the lore, and that is what makes it scary, cus it's the unknown. Sequel gives it a bit more lore, the perfect amount of lore for a sequel. The series gave lore, but the wrong one. Instead of giving the lore about the entity and the mythos, they gave the lore about his weaknesses, which are stupid as hell. The dagger one is stupid cus the concept that your only weapon against this thing is your fearlessness, which is cool but this series made it just stabbable.

Two :

Then there's Rich's sacrifice for marge, which was ASS. no backstory on either of them, no background of why he has the psychology of a martyr, that too for a girl who betrayed her friend who is dealing with loneliness and her father's death, just to become popular in the girl group, even after being outcasted multiple times by the group. Now yall would say she wanted to feel included and all. That doesn't compensate for what she did , now you're saying I need to feel sad cus a boy died to save this bitch? Hell nahh. I hate this series. Completely ruined what was set up by the movies.

Discussion What possible change will need to happen that might make AI films accepted?

I'm still divided on using AI, I can understand where it's used is just unnecessary and lacking creativity but I also see it being adopted wholesale in other media (adverts, I'm looking at you).

But what will be the thing that either destroys the use of AI in movies or acts as a pivotal moment for its acceptance?

I know this will be mostly about it not being acceptable at all but audiences get used to new formats, new effects, new ways of doing things and I suppose, if they get entertained they might not care how stuff is made?

Discussion Would you call Roy from Blade Runner a redeemed antihero?

Post image
28 Upvotes

Before i start, i know someone will tell me "This is the point of the movie" but judging from a popular post i recently saw, and the fact that many people like Ridley Scott's origami unicorn ending, there is room for this discussion.

I saw a post that called Roy Batty from Blade Runner a redeemed antihero. But i wouldn't say he needed to be redeemed or call him an antihero: He's an antagonist who didn't want to die like a slave and tried to find a way to live like a normal human. Watching it as a teenager, i initially thought all the replicants are bad, until Roy's final monologue where he explains their motivations. But watching it again as an adult, i understood and empathized with them way before that. They're basically human (in a way more human than Deckard) and are treated as disposable tools, so rebelling against the system is understandable.

Considering all this, did he even need to be redeemed? Him saving Deckard definitely goes a long way towards redeeming him in the viewer's eyes, but i 'd argue it wouldn't even be necessary if people didn't have a tendency to automatically take the side of the protagonist. You could easily make a movie from the replicants' point of view and they'd come across as really sympathetic.

New Release Street Fighter 2026: Non-Spoiler Review

Post image
20 Upvotes

There was something about the trailers for Street Fighter 2026 that got me excited for the film. It seemed pretty irreverent and leaned into the video game vibe that set it apart from the more serious take of the recent Mortal Kombat films. It had a tone that made me want to watch it.

Now, the previous Street Fighter films have been pretty up and down in terms of quality. The 1994 film has something of a cult following (probably more for its "so bad it's good" vibe), with quotable lines and Raul Julia delivering a standout performance. Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, on the other hand, was pretty forgettable and failed to deliver on any of its promise. So I thought, maybe this time we were finally going to get an adaptation that would elevate Street Fighter in the cinematic realm.

Alas, it was not meant to be. I mean, I'll be honest, I really wanted to like this film, but I came away feeling pretty disappointed.

First, let me talk about the film's good parts. There are animated sequences in the film that pop up here and there that are really well done. So good, in fact, that I found myself wishing the whole film had been done in that style.

However, things that work in animation don't always translate well into live action, and the rest of the movie feels a bit disjointed, with the tone jumping around from outright campiness to complete seriousness.

When the movie works, it's when it fully embraces its video gamey roots. It doesn't bother explaining why people are capable of phenomenal feats. Instead, it just revels in the absurdity of it all and uses it to create spectacle after spectacle.

Where the film falters is in the overwhelming sense of melodrama that pervades a good bulk of its characters, melodrama that feels neither earned nor necessary. This is especially evident with Ryu, whose portrayal by Andrew Koji feels like it belongs in a completely different movie. Don't get me wrong, I actually like Koji's Ryu, but his performance has a totally different serious tone from the rest of the cast, who seem to be having a great time hamming it up.

I also felt like a lot of the characters were underutilised, and I got the distinct impression that quite a few of their scenes had been left on the cutting room floor. Which is a shame, because there were several characters who got a big build-up that ultimately amounted to nothing.

Speaking of which, Jason Momoa as Blanka has to be one of the biggest examples of stunt casting I've seen in a while. Given the CG nature of the role and his story arc, pretty much anyone could have played the role. It felt like a bit of a waste, and yet another character saddled with drama that really didn't need to be.

My last nitpick is that I felt the audio for the dialogue was poorly mastered. There were quite a few moments where I genuinely struggled to make out what was being said. Not that it mattered all that much, as the story is really just an excuse to string a bunch of fights together. There are plenty of plot holes and nonsensical story beats, but I'm pretty sure Street Fighter fans aren't going to see this movie for its story.

The fights themselves were adequate. I do think the editing diminished the impact of some of them, and quite a few seemed to finish just as they were getting going. I guess that's the downside of having such a big ensemble cast and a limited amount of screen time to give everyone their moment.

As things go, this movie certainly has more production value than its 1994 counterpart and is definitely better than The Legend of Chun-Li. Whether you enjoy it or not will probably come down to how big a Street Fighter fan you are and how much you're willing to overlook its shortcomings. Personally, I'd just wait to watch this one at home.

If you do decide to catch it in cinemas, there is a mid-credits scene, and that's it. Don't bother waiting till the end :)

Question What Are The Best Cinema "No Phones, No Talking" Pre-Show PSAs?

It's been 15 years since the legendary "Don't Talk" Angry Voicemail PSA from Alamo Drafthouse.

I'm looking for other clever, funny and/or impactful videos from cinemas around the world that tell the audience before the movie to behave and respect the cinema experience. I'm hoping to share them around and bring some etiquette back into the cinema.

Discussion The amount of hate towards ramayana by own country people is very disappointing.

Since the latest trailer released, the hate towards ramayana by Indians is very disappointing for me as an Indian. I know that foreigners are loving this film. They liked the cgi, music, etc. and majority of Indians also are in awe of this movie. But the amount of hatred some people trying to present for it is so so bad and I feel very sad seeing and hearing this. All the foreigners I really appreciate your opinions about this and hope this movie will move to your favourites in letterboxd.

Discussion by choosing to sacrifice his family life to save humanity? And what kind of humanity deserves to be saved when it is itself heading toward collapse, leaving his children to pay a price they never chose?

Post image

Wasn’t his son, Tom, who took on responsibility at an early age, faced reality, and did his best to keep his family together without complaint, just as deserving of his father’s attention as Murph, simply because she shared his passion for science and space?

Why does the film glorify a father’s sacrifice for humanity while failing to give equal recognition to the son’s quiet sacrifices?

And does saving humanity’s future justify abandoning one’s responsibilities toward one’s children in the present?

Question Who is your favorite redeemed antihero?

The redeemed antihero archetype has always been one of my favorites. There's just something I love about a character who starts out as the "bad guy" but ends up having the most heroic moment in the entire movie. Some examples that come to mind are C.J. (Dawn of the Dead), Nux (Mad Max), Yondu (Guardians of the Galaxy), and my personal favorite, Roy Batty from Blade Runner.

Who's your favorite? I'm also hoping to discover more movies featuring this type of character that I haven't seen yet.

Discussion Just finished V/H/S: Mixtape and WTF did I just watch?

Post image
13 Upvotes

As an avid watcher of the V/H/S franchise, I genuinely don't know what to make of this one. Like, WHAT did I just watch? 💀

This is probably the most bizarre, weird, and confusing entry in the entire franchise for me. There's SO much gore, blood, and disturbing stuff happening, but somehow, that doesn't automatically make the segments interesting. A lot of them left me more confused than entertained, and I found myself wondering what the hell I was even watching half the time.

Honestly, the only segments that really worked for me were the first one and the last one, "Death Tone." Funnily enough, they were easily the best parts of the whole movie for me. Death Tone was a pretty solid way to end things, and that song is ridiculously catchy too. 😭 It's been stuck in my head more than some of the actual segments.

I usually love the chaotic, unhinged nature of this franchise, but this one felt like it was trying so hard to be bizarre that it forgot to make some of its stories genuinely engaging.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I finished this movie feeling more bewildered than scared.

What did you guys think of V/H/S: Mixtape? Am I alone in thinking this is one of the weirdest and least interesting entries in the franchise, or did some of you actually enjoy the segments?

there were some dots on the screen at the start and they had to stop and we lost 5 minutes or so while they reset the screen. Also when the film finished the Q&A simply did not connect, I waited 5-10 min before I left so idk if it ever connected. Has anyone had a similar experience?

Other than that I thought it was an interesting thought provoking documentary

Proposing this as the Barbenheimer of 2026 and not Dunesday or whatever

You Can See Everything + Street Fighter + Whalefall + Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother

An entire day at the movies. What do y’all want to see first? I’m thinking Whalefall first and then Your Mother, then You Can See Everything, and then wash it all down with the dumb fun of Street Fighter.

It’s a great weekend at the movies.
