Mashburn & Rose are really, really good in the studio. Ive known about Rose from espn. First time seeing Mashburn. Good work Turner.

The whole metrics obsession seems rigged against mid majors. Power conference teams have a pretty high floor no matter how mediocre or bad they are, since they all have strong strength of schedules, which is a bit of circular reasoning. Mid Majors have a pretty low ceiling no matter how good they are since they don't play the power conference schedule.

u/SpaceSheperd North Carolina • NC State Mar 19 '26
Metrics have been very high on midmajors like Loyola Chicago, Wichita State, Gonzaga (many, many times), and others in the past

Not really, if Miami had crushed their opponents their metrics would be better

As much as we hate on this yrs bubble, it's clear that Miami deserved to be in. It's why the eye test always matters. Not even sdsu managed to go undefeated in 2023

So does this SMU team count as a real team? The fact that 'real team' means having to face a top 25 team and any other match up isnt a 'real team' is idiotic.
2
u/Pure_Fault7056 Texas Longhorns Mar 19 '26
Missing one of their top players, should not have been in with the way they played the last few weeks.
2
u/daNish_brUin Nebraska Cornhuskers • UCLA Bruins Mar 19 '26
Yeah SMU is the more questionable inclusion than Miami
2
u/Pure_Fault7056 Texas Longhorns Mar 19 '26
The committee chair justified their inclusion by claiming Edwards would be back. They gave them a break!
7
u/gambit539 Arkansas Razorbacks Mar 19 '26
Can’t really help your schedule. If I’m not mistaken Miami also had teams on their schedule who had down seasons compared to recent years past which makes them looker weaker. I could be totally wrong. But I feel like I read that in an article relatively recently.
2
u/daNish_brUin Nebraska Cornhuskers • UCLA Bruins Mar 19 '26
Yeah they got turned down by some bigger opponents, and had a few opponents having down years. They played who they could play. They may get destroyed by Tennessee, but thats has no bearing on their inclusion in the tournament. Just weird certain people are obsessed with them losing and it meaning they didn't belong. Did they feel the same way about Butler, George Mason, Oakland, etc? Its just fun entertainment and a cool story. Damn.

I hope more teams will schedule them in the non-con next season. They’re phone to watch and they kicked butt tonight. They certainly showed they can hang with P5 programs.

But you gotta think about the close games Tennessee lost to quad 1 opponents. Losing to good teams is obviously more important than just winning.

1
u/confusedyetstillgoin Indiana Hoosiers • Tennessee Volunteers Mar 19 '26
oh I know, i’m playing along with you. i’m definitely of the opinion that people would rather decide games with advanced metrics than playing actual games
1
u/gambit539 Arkansas Razorbacks Mar 19 '26
I mean I get statistical analysis of metrics for creating betting lines and making an educated guess when placing bets among other things. That being said it’s March and this is why we play the game.
