Honesty, if Bruce was genuinely upset about their inclusion in the tournament, I feel like he’s done a really good job of not acting like it on this Inside March Madness show tonight. He’s also given Miami a ton of props before and after the game so I respect him for that.

I think it's really the gambling that does it. Too many bet the favorite and hate getting taken by cinderellas. I would argue, don't bet, and especially don't do it for the early NCAA tournament rounds.
15
u/Mukaido Houston Cougars Mar 19 '26
Yeah for real. For some reason, maybe because of social media like you said, quite a big portion of humanity is now more about competing to be the biggest hater rather than enjoying the moment. It’s unfortunate. A big portion of the tournament is all about allowing the Cinderellas to have their chance and capturing lightning in a bottle.

82
u/SaintArkweather Delaware • American University Mar 19 '26
Something the analytics models can't capture is the fact that every team that played Miami the second half of the season had that game circled on the schedule. Just look at that Ohio game, that had a postseason atmosphere for a regular season game that didn't even really matter for seeding. They got basically everyone's best stuff night after night.

I honestly think playing tonight was the best thing for Miami. Gives them a chance to play a tournament game in a friendly environment and get some momentum going into the round of 64. They also get a nice payout for winning a tournament game while being in prime time for all to see.

I feel like we keep venturing more and more into hypothetical sports. There are so many rankings and advanced stats that the actual results of the games become an afterthought.
And obviously there is a time and place for analytics, but so many of these rankings rely on everything but the actual game results.

u/Sportsgirl77 Gonzaga Bulldogs Mar 19 '26
It's funny that college basketball is more reliant on analytics than college football, and yet I feel like the hypothetical games get played a lot more in football. Maybe that's just cause football doesn't have autobids for every conference champion
24
u/Crims0ntied Alabama Crimson Tide Mar 19 '26
There's fewer data points in football, so the analytics tend to be a little less reliable. Every team has, at best 2 or 3 usable nonconference games.

u/carguymt Kentucky Wildcats Mar 19 '26
Probably because there are fewer games too. So to compare certain teams all you can use is analytics and hypothetical matchups. There’s more out of conference games in basketball and more games in general there are more opportunities for direct on court comparisons.

Bad night for the '31-0 regular season doesn't mean anything' section of the commentariat.
There are far worse ways than 'taking everyone's absolute best shot on a constant basis- and coming out on top' to build a team that deserves to be here and can win a game or two while here.
Redhawks deserved to be in either way, but since tournament results tend to shape the narrative that type of meathead nonsense should hopefully be on a temporary moratorium. At least.

u/TheLoneWolf527 Duke Blue Devils Mar 19 '26
As a Miami (Ohio) hater throughout the season, they deserved to be in over every bubble team. Why? Because they know how to win. Basically every other team that didn't get in didn't show the ability to consistently win games. A large chunk of them lost like 80% of their games down the stretch. Auburn only had 2 winning streaks of 3 games all year.
I hope this game can be a signal for future tournaments to look at those conferences with teams who win 28 games and still don't make it over these P4 teams that keep losing all the time and get in because "NET"

I’m so glad Miami Ohio beat SMU! They weren’t a first four team. There was no reason why a one loss team should have been disrespected so much! It’s very hard to go 31-1 and now they are 32-1 and beat an ACC team by 10 points! This should put to rest the strength of schedule argument since any team that only loses one game in 32 games is good, regardless of schedule!
