This is why Painter is a good respected coach.

My first time seeing him my gut said he looked like a jerk. The more I read his quotes and listen to his interviews, he seems like a standup guy. I'll happily admit my gut was wrong and am happy for the train nerds, it seems they got a good one.

I used to dislike him for some unknown ignorant reason, then he won me over with his presser after our game last year. Painter is that dude.

Agreed. Just a clear-eyed analysis on both sides of the ball.

I think TJ has cited him as one of his mentors, and that might be why we have the non-con deal with them

I know TJ ended up doing the same thing as Painter with Milan (and us not having $$$). A silver lining of the Toure injury is that it opens up a spot for Lipsey to come back. Not sure how that'll play out come January, though.

Checks out. Better to have TKR go elsewhere than risk a culture problem if Painter breaks promises to his current guys. Especially when culture and development is Painter's whole deal.

Edey had the option for a 5th year. The only reason TKR agreed to play second fiddle to Edey was the promise that Edey was gone to the league and TKR would get to be the man in the 24-25 season. Painter has discussed how these decisions are made early in the season so he can do roster planning. Same deal with Morton and Gillis - Painter had commitments from all three before the season that if they wanted their extra year, they had to decide then if it was going to be at Purdue or elsewhere.

Would be real shitty for TKR to screw Jacobsen/Pierce in that manner because he wanted take-backs on leaving.

Pretty much the exact same as MSU/Izzo and Jaxson Kohler.

The culture delusion is in full effect here if you think losing a top 25 college basketball player is a good idea for the sake of culture.

Not really. TKR left for the draft, Painter planned his roster building and committments around that (as all coaches do). This isn't really 'losing a player', it is Painter not wanting to screw over his current guys for someone who left. That is a massive deal for somewhere like Purdue.

I just don’t think this is “screwing over a player”. They probably had no idea this was even a possibility. I have a hard time believing one of these big men are going to go from 35 to 15 mins a game if they bring him back. I would assume this would maybe affect their 4th big guy in the rotation.

I also just think this idea of “culture” is one of the most vague, overstated complexes in sports.

Talk about delusion if you think Ren is a top 25 player.

Not really the point. Evan Miya had him a little outside that range last season.

So I didn’t read up on his situation. What’s his argument for a sixth year when the new rule that should apply for him is 5 for 5? Is there a medical exception for season ending injury?

He redshirted his first year due to injury. This is his 6th year. Even for 5 for 5, he would not be eligible. He was also drafted by the NBA and would not be eligible.

I know having European pros on our team this year is a gray area for “professional athletes” playing in college, but I’m starting to wonder where the line actually stops? I agree based on ncaa rules once drafted you’re done, but if that’s unenforceable can LeBron play for us? What about Jordan? Obviously these are unlikely scenarios but I think the ncaa has blown up their scope of who is eligible.

The problem is nuanced because of the way international youth basketball is structured. As soon as young teens show talent in Europe, they're put on a 'pro' team (which is really just the equivalent of EYBL/club ball in the states). There *are* real, bonafide pros that exist, but there is also the fact that every kid that would have a chance to play high major D1 has been on a 'pro' contract just due to this structure. Their pro teams simply also have youth subsidiary funnels. People want to take the hard line of 'no pros!' without realizing how wildly exclusionary that is, and the NCAA does the wrong thing for the right reasons in trying to play in the gray area of allowing international youth a chance at the NCAAs. Unfortunately that means they have to decide how pro is too pro and it leads to the mess we currently have. Add that guys like TKR can legitimately make more money in college than pros, and you have a tangled system where any reasonable interpretation requires us to choose between excluding almost all foreign kids or letting old men suit up because they can't make it in a real pro league.

And the root, as always is the unwillingness of anyone to accept that the NCAA is just a professional league in its own right that needs to be dealing with the players as if they're professionals rather than trying to somehow preserve amateurism in a world where their 'amateurs' make more than professional leagues are willing to match.

Painter rocks. TKR needs to update his LinkedIn and call it a day.
