Hi everyone who's on the journey of learning the beautiful art and craft of colour... Please please please!!!! Post your rec 709! Don't ask for feedback without a rec709 comparison against your grade! A raw or log image isn't that helpful alone for the majority of posts here unless you're really trying to work on something related to large dynamic range, and it should still supplement your rec709 attempt for us to compare as well.
Thanks and cheerio on your learning journey!

Lots of people post a picture or clip of their grade here with no comment besides wanting to know if it's 'good' or not. This question is impossible to answer, and you won't get any truly useful feedback. You'll only get a bunch of guesses based on vibes.
Why? Because whether a grade is good or not depends entirely on context. You could create a beautiful colour-perfect warm romantic sunset scene, but if it's meant to be a cold, terrifying moment in a thriller, your grade sucks and you need to rework it. Conversely, you could throw all the curves and wheels out of whack to create a unwatchable trippy rainbow scene, and it would be terrible for most purposes but for a psychedelic sequence it could be perfect.
Ask yourself: what is the purpose of the shot? How do you want the viewer to feel? What do you want to draw attention to? How does the shot look compared to the shots that come before and after it, and the rest of the scene? What format will it be shown in, or what devices are people likely to be looking at it on? Does it fit the technical specifications required for delivery? Does it match the vision of the director, and/or the needs of the client?
Once you know these answers, you should be able to do a pretty good job of evaluating for yourself whether your grade is good or not, but you will also have benchmarks you can use to ask for more specific feedback questions that will receive better, more actionable answers: "I want my subject to stand out from the background more, how can I do that?" "I was looking to create a dark, suspenseful mood across this sequence - what's missing?" "This colour match isn't right, what am I getting wrong?"
Don't just post a screenshot and leave it there. Help us to help you create better work by including as much context as you can alongside it.

If I ask myself the question “is it too much?” then is it actually too much?
Your thoughts on the grade?

Hey everyone,
I'm looking to connect with anyone who's worked on CGI projects with HDR color grading, specifically a Blender-to-DaVinci Resolve pipeline. I feel like I'm missing a "universal method" that keeps color consistent from render to final grade, and I'd love to compare notes with people who've solved this.
Here's my current setup:
The problem: every display I check on shows noticeably different colors. I know a Decklink + consumer OLED isn't a full reference-grade setup, but consider my ipad and iphones display as the true color here. After tesing on few other device I'd still expect more consistency than what I'm getting, so I suspect there's something wrong in my process rather than just "cheap hardware."
A few things I'm unsure about:
If you've worked on CGI/VFX projects with HDR deliverables, I'd really appreciate hearing how your pipeline is structured, what mistakes to avoid, and what hardware/software combo actually gave you reliable, repeatable color.
Thanks in advance to anyone willing to share their experience!

I bought a used Nikon d3000 three months ago. I prefer warm and soft tones like peach, violet, and gold. Color grading is fun to experiment with but I fear I have become biased towards certain colors. How can I improve these photos? Is edit 1 better than 2?

what is the name of the soft and muted cinematography and color grading you often see in japanese movies from the 1990s and 2000s? i’ve noticed it in movies like april story, love letter, a gentle breeze in the village, the taste of tea and many others from this era.
the colors often look pale and slightly washed out with low contrast and soft natural lighting. there’s also this empty or minimalist quality to the image. it gives the movies such a nostalgic and peaceful vibe. like slightly faded image makes everything feel like a memory from another time
is there a specific name for this cinematography or color grading style? and how would you recreate this look today?

Is this ok for sunrise shot? I just want it to look realistic as it’s for a documentary.

I’ve made this short film and I think it’s good except one section is just so dark. I’m not sure what to do.
Can anyone take a look at it and tell me if it’s salvageable?

Hi!
I am currently color grading on premiere, have shot with a Sony FX6, and plan to export in 4K.
In some of my graded footage, i am getting these lines? I’m not sure if i’ve messed with the exposure or curvatures too much, but i can’t seem to find the fix.
Please help!

Ok. Right off the bat. Not in any one’s league here but I respect the knowledge. So don’t beat me up for asking a dumb question. I just shot some footage on an iPhone (just needed some quick shots for a friend so it on an insta 360 is really easy). Well when I dropped it into davinci to just do some quick cuts it looked very flat compared to what I saw on the iPhone. After working with my ChatGPT I learned about HDR vs SDR editing. I’ve only edited in SDR and have rendered in SDR on R3D raw. But using HDR was really easy and looked a lot different. I then tried it on my R3D and it did some amazing stuff. So why don’t I see much edited and rendered in HDR (I’m probably screwing up the correct terms, but basically using Rec.2100 HLG). ChatGPT suggested giving a client rendered versions of both. Just so you know by client I’m talking weddings not commercial work. Any thoughts on pros and cons of hdr vs sdr would be appreciated
