My first pit orchestra experience

Post image

I’m a freshman in high school and i got into my school’s musical. Our school is starting to be known as “the performing arts school” of the district and I’m pretty pround of it. I’m going to be tripling up on tenor and bass trombone as well as euphonium. The euphonium part scares me a little because I haven’t played it in a while and I have like a LOT of solo and independant parts. long story short, I’m really excited for the season!!!

I was wondering if it was that since not too many trombone books call for euphonium, and you mentioned a lot of solo/independent parts. I got to sightread it a while ago on very short notice as an emergency sound check sub for my university's theater troupe. It's a really fun book.

Just be careful about planning your tenor/bass switching since mutes and trigger notes can cause issues if you're running peashooter+bass bone. If you have a large tenor with a trigger, I think you'll have a better time using that instead of a bass.

Also, mutes. Cladwell calls for solotone mute, which is awesome to play, but can be annoying to source, so make sure you have that figured out.

Me and the main trombonist agreed that we split high and low (which is why I’m regularly on bass trombone) but they’re going to miss a show so I have to learn the entire trombone part along with the euph. As for mutes, we have everything BUT the solotone as far as I know, so chances are that I’ll just buy my own for the sake of having it as well.
