Drumsticks from Alan Gratzer (REO) and Simon Kirke (Bad Co). The REO stick had a thick later of tape wrapped around the back and and painted red white and blue.
Sunglasses from Anne Curless (Expose)
A kiss on the hand from Madonna when she held my hand for like 20 seconds during La Isla Bonita in the late 80s.
Guitar picks from numerous artists, but the coolest was Brad Gillis (Night Ranger). I was like 14 rows back and felt something hit my chest. I looked down and saw a stainless steel guitar pick about the size of a half dollar with his signature engraved on it.
Setlist that Eddie Money actually un-taped and handed to me.
Back in the early 90s I was 3 sheets to the wind on the front row of a Brian Adams concert. Had been drinking all afternoon at an office party before the show since my date cancelled. I was sitting down and kind of drifting off when I was doused with water. I look up and he was standing on the edge of the stage with an empty cup of water. A spotlight was on me and he said "You look like you had a hard day at the office" to which I nodded. Then he said "You need to get on your feet and rock!". I stood up, put my fists up like a fighter and the whole arena started cheering. He grabbed a bottle of water and held it out towards me saying "You look like you need this more than I do!"

At a Phish show in November of 1994 at UIC Pavilion in Chicago I caught a glow stick that was thrown from the stage by Trey Anastasio during what was probably the bands last 'glow stick war'. Hundreds of glowsticks were thrown into the pit from either side and the fans were throwing them up on stage and everywhere else while Trey ran around, picking them up and throwing them back out at the audience. I was 12 people from the stage and had my hand up and made the briefest eye contact with Trey just as he threw the stick that I caught. He smiled at me catching it and went back to grabbing more sticks to hurl at the audience.

u/rideincircles 2d ago
They probably weren't as crazy as back thrn, but there were still a bunch of glow sticks at the phish Bonnaroo 2009 set. I brought hundreds for phish, crystal castles and nine inch nails.

Have a big 3 ring binder full of set lists. A shelf with a stack of drum sticks and bucket full of picks. Between the wife and I we have manged to catch lots of fun stuff. Going to smaller venues and shows really helps.

One more.... While waiting for a friend after a Nick Cave show, I was standing next to the venue Massey Hall in Toronto, Nick Cave gave me something interesting. I had no idea I was waiting where he was going to come out of a rear entrance. Figuring I was hoping he'd come out this way, he came up to me and asked if I wanted an autograph. I said sure and handed him my hard copy ticket (miss those) and to free his hands he bit down on the ticket while he searched for a sharpe in his jacket I have Nick Caves dental imprint on a Nick Cave ticket. I think it was 2009. Definitely still have it.

We usually get the rail, and Gary Clark Jr gave me his capo after his set. I was on the rail asking for a pic and he handed me that. I got a small bottle of Fireball that fell from a singer's pocket once. One singer handed me a tshirt from their band. One band gave me pot on their bus...John Popper gave me a signed harmonica.

Yes a tambourine at arcade fire who promptly sent security after me as soon as show was finished who basically ripped my arm off with no explanation retrieving it
8
u/dervari 2d ago
Did they get it? If so, did they offer anything in trade? That's just a dick move there. They're expensive but could have send you home with a drumstick and pick.
6
u/alexj_baker 2d ago
Literally the only way we found out that the band had requested it was because we complained to the venue the next day

Front row at a Tool concert. Danny Carey handed me his half-drunk Gatorade. I'm pretty sure that's how I became a better drummer. I drank it.

u/Merrick_McIntosh 2d ago
Went to a Violent Femms show in an alley in Cincinnati. They threw out a pick and we couldn't figure out where it landed. When I got home later I found it when I was getting changed. It landed in my cleavage.

1980 Blondie, When I was at the Midnight Special taping, Clem would bite his drumsticks and throw them into the audience. Me and a girl grab the same pair and I wrestled her to the ground for them. I was just 19 lol

He is such a great performer to the crowd. He sees you and he shows it. Some artists are super good about that. He is one of them.
7
u/mbjb1972 2d ago
He is an artist and a performer for sure. I remember he brought on stage a giant cut out of an iPhone, told everyone to put away their phones, stood inside and said there you can see me through a phone.

I have caught guitar picks from Deftones and A Perfect Circle. Drumstick from Tomas Halle from Meshuggah and a setlist from the same show. Guitar picks from Sergio Vega (formerly Deftones and now Quicksand), etc. other setlists from other bands too. That’s what I can think of off the top of my head.

Almost: I saw Cheap Trick twice in concert, once in 1977 opening for KISS, then a second time in 1981 as the headliner. When they played "Surrender" at the end of the '81 show, Robin sang the line "got my KISS records out" and held up a copy of KISS' debut album. I stood up and let out a good whoop. Robin turned and looked right at me and flung the album in my direction! Unfortunately, it sliced to the right and someone else got the souvenir. So close and yet so far....

I caught Johnny Marr's guitar pick from one of his solo shows in 2018.
Paul Barker's guitar pick (Lead Into Gold) opening for Skinny Puppy at their 3rd to last concert.
Stephen Perkins' setlist at a Porno for Pyros show a couple of years ago
Albert Bouchard's drum stick when he played with The Dictators opening for The Damned. He was the original drummer and founding member of Blue Oyster Kult.
Kriz DK's drum stick during Genitorturers' set opening for Lords of Acid around 2018.
Galen Waling's drum stick playing for Julien-K a few times. (ok, handed a stick a couple of those times)

A smaller band than many others mentioned here, but Eric Lanese of Ohio jamband ekoostik hookah threw me, very specifically, a broken drumstick in 2006. He'd noticed awkward teenaged me and my sweet-but-square mom at a few shows, sticking out like a pair of sore thumbs in the crowd of hard-partying jamband fans. (I later heard him joke that he "could see all" from behind his drumkit).
Anyway, he caught my eye, held up the broken stick, mouthed "for you!!” and threw it in a perfect arc between his bandmates and into my ecstatic little paws.
I still have it, proudly displayed on a shelf in my bedroom.
Like everyone in that band, Eric is an absolute sweetheart. I don't know him well, but we've crossed paths a handful of times over the years - and not only does he recognize me (decades later), but it always feels like he's just always as delighted to see me as I am to see him.

u/Concerts_Bananas_94 2d ago
It wasn’t thrown into the crowd, more smashed to pieces and I caught it!
1995 NIN Milwaukee. Trent and company smashed their keyboards up to all hell. We were near the front by Robin Finck. Pieces of the keyboard flew everywhere and I managed to catch one.
There was a younger girl standing by me who was upset she didn’t catch it and gave me a whiny ear full 😂
At the end of the night I caved and tapped her on the shoulder and said Here you go!! and gave her the piece of the key. I hope she still has it wherever she is!
Also Duke from Garbage handed me a pick at the end of their set back in 2015…I assume he picked (no pun) me out for my singing and dancing etc. there was a young girl with her parents next to me. Her face lit up when she saw him hand it to me. I immediately turned to her and handed it to her. Duke acknowledged this and the parents and others around us high fived me.
It’s always an easy choice to do something for someone else who may enjoy that moment more than me whether it’s their first concert, their fave band etc. plus it feels good to make their day!!

Drumsticks, picks, set lists…
I did see LØLØ recently, one of her songs has a cheerleader aesthetic and I caught a Pom Pom she threw into the crowd
I’ve also been to shows where towels and beach balls have been thrown into the crowd though never caught them myself

I caught a drum stick from Quest Love at a Roots show. He bounces it off the stage and it came right to me.
I play drums and my thought was, “cool! What am I going to do with one stick?” I took a picture with the drums in the background and gave it to girl standing next to me who drove in for her birthday.

Negative side - I got hit in the face with a slab of rancid meat at a show. I don't remember the band but they were opening up for Skinny Puppy.
Positive side - I also caught a drumstick from Klaus Meine, singer from the Scorpions. Another Scorpion concert I caught a Rudy Schenker guitar pick. I caught guitar picks from Paul Stanley and Tommy Thayer of Kiss. Also, Devon Allman recently.

u/AuroraDF 2d ago
Guitar picks and set lists. I was handed a drumstick by the drummer after one show. I also once caught a towel, but it was covered in the sweat of the band member I wasn't so keen on so I gave it to a friend who would appreciate it more.

Lots and lots of stuff, almost too many to mention in a comment tbh. Guitar plectrums, setlists, a few drumsticks, waterbottles, lyrics wrote out and taped to the stage, a waterbottle with a setlist wrapped around it...
ALSO I have recently created my own sub called r/fame_wall precisely to show off this kind of thing. If anyone wants to upload pics or talk about anything you've caught (or people you've met too) then feel free to join and/or spread the word!

The coolest catch I’ve had at a concert was his drumstick July 4 2003 in Ct at 104fest. I am 6 feet tall and had to jump as high as I could, and bending backwards I caught it in two fingers at my apex.

Mine was July 9, 2005 Warped Tour when he was playing with Transplants.

At my third Grateful Dead concert at Penn State in May of 1980, I got in early and stood front and center on the board, which was a hassle at first, but pretty great when the music started, and especially during the drum solo when one of Mickey Hart's drumsticks came flying right at me, and I caught it in the air.

Didn’t catch it but got a stage hand to toss me Jesse Welles guitar pic and then I got him to sign it after his show. He said “where did u get this?” I said “I asked for it but u can have it back if u need it” and then he laughed and said it was okay and signed it for me. I keep it in a lil box with my dogs baby teeth lol.

We go to enough shows that we have a family setlist wall. Their first setlist was the Wiggles.
My prized items are a guitar pick Tom Morello took out of his pocket and gave to me.
... and Jack White's metal finger slide. He kicked it off the stage after playing Seven Nation Army.

Years and years ago. I was about 10 (and 40 years ago) my parents took me to a Kenny Rogers concert. Kenny tossed out a bunch of stuff including some drumsticks. I caught one. Some old fat woman ripped it out of my hands and ran off. (She was probably 40 or so but in my youth she was OLD! Lmao.)
2
u/badyodelers 2d ago
This happened in the mid to late 80’s at a David Lee Roth concert. He would come out with a silver baton/stick and do a martial arts-esque routine. After he was done he tossed it into the crowd. I caught it but with hundreds of my closest friends also catching it, there was a scuffle for it. It broke in half, two of us got a souvenir.

Many years ago, DJ Swamp was playing a small club in Baltimore. At the end of his set he lit his record on fire then threw the warped record into the crowd and I caught it. I kinda had to fight a girl for it when she tried to grab it from me but I won in the end.

Not me, but when I took my 10 y/o to see Zappa plays Zappa, he asked him what he wanted to hear, he answered Penguin in Bondage. Big laughs, he has no idea what bondage is. Dweezil called him up on stage to lead this audience participation part of a song. My kid was wearing a bowler, similar to what Frank sometimes wore in the UK which probably got Dweezil attention. Afterwards we hung out with the band, and he got drum sticks, picks, setlist a t-shirt and a killer lifelong memory

Ive caught a few items in my time. It helps that I am tall, have ape arms and above average hand-eye coordination and reflexes.
I caught the following:
-Billy Corgan water bottle (x2) I gave them to other fans -Many guitar picks -Smashing pumpkins drummer Jimmy Chamberlin drum stick -Stone temple pilots towel and guitar slide -Marilyn Manson’s sunglasses. These are framed in a sweet display shown here.

The most rock and roll thing I’ve ever observed was during the Marilyn Manson/smashing pumpkins tour. Manson did this thing every show where he would break a bottle and use a piece of glass to cut his hand, then smear blood on his face. This particular show he must have went a little deep and blood got all over his face. He looked a little frustrated, walked over to the PA speakers and tore the set list from it where it was taped. He used it to wipe the blood off of his face.. then threw it into the crowd. I was all like.. “got.. daaayum!”

Lord yes. Besides the basic drumsticks, guitar picks, and setlists (got a whole binder of those), some of the most interesting things include:
- a set of baby blue elbow-length opera gloves that the singer ripped off with his teeth and threw to me
- a $5 bill ripped in half (singer took a bunch of cash from the merch booth and ripped it up and threw it into the crowd)
- a cigarette box that I got signed after the show (the singer ate most of the cigarettes mid-set, but there are still a couple left)
All of those are from the same singer (Eric from Foxy Shazam)... now for some other bands:
- fur vest that Lex Vegas, drummer of Cadaver Dogs, was wearing. Still stinks to high heaven with sweat and various types of alcohol
- volume knob that broke off Mummy Cass (Here Come the Mummies)'s guitar, he makes all his guitars himself so that was extra special!
- Breathe Carolina threw out sour patch kids packets at a festival a couple years ago. Still not totally sure why
This didn't happen to me, but I heard a story where Dr. Yo from Here Come the Mummies hit a golf ball with his flute, and some lucky fan caught it
This sounds like a super interesting article idea OP, definitely feel free to DM me if you want to chat about it more!

Drumstick from Andrew Pinching (Damned, Lagwagon, Spike and the Gimmie Gimmies) guitar pick from Monte Lee Pitman (Madonna guitarist/ Ministry). Guitar pick from Christ Rest (RKL). Here’s two.
I took a guitar pick to the chest at a Travis concert in Cincinnati, OH. Fran Healey probably wasn’t aiming for me, but it hit me and skittered down my chest to land at my feet.
I don’t know if anyone but me and my girlfriend noticed. It was dark and crowded, so I couldn’t crouch down and it was quite dark. I took a guess at where it landed and planted my foot. I didn’t move for the rest of the show.
Lo and behold, after the show ended and space cleared around us, there it was. It remains in a little box of college-era stuff my wife (same person!) has on her work desk.
This ain’t exactly a “caught something” story in the physical sense. We took my mom to see Ben Harper play a show at the Tabernacle in Atlanta. Me and my brother, and both our girlfriends, and mom.
We made good and damn sure we got a first row spot on the balcony, just to the right of the band.
If anyone was at that show (2001 or 2?) and saw Ben go climbing all the way across the railing, you’re welcome (so says my mom). He hugged and thanked her for being there. She was among the oldest fans in attendance, I am sure.
Afterwards, we waited to meet the band. Mom was a trooper and lasted the whole time while we waited. When Ben came out, he recognized my mom and after another big hug he explained that he saw her, felt compelled to meet her and thank her for being at the show.
The problem was, he had no direct way to climb up, so he had to go all the way the hell around bc she caught his eye. I quietly asked Ben if he’d sign a poster for me but that it was for her, not for me. He asked me her name and wrote “for Elizabeth, you had me climbing!” It’s still in hanging in a frame at her house.
This sadly was before iPhones were videoing everything. I have a couple of old printed photos somewhere around here. I’ll circle back and edit this post if I can find them.
EDIT: here’s a video (not my own) from that concert. He was almost to where we were sitting when it cuts off. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=apCFvNllg2g&ra=m

My current collection of caught guitar picks: Hinder ×2 (they threw like 20 picks at both concerts), Parkway Drive, The Devil Wears Prada, The Amity Affliction, I Prevail, Imminence (ahhhh), Unprocessed, Not Enough Space + a signed drumstick, Alpha Wolf setlist, Asking Alexandria setlist🤘 Also a lot of artists grabbing my phone to film themselves in smaller venues is always sick to look back on! Anyone else have an addiction to rewatching concert footage?

When I was a kid I was at Edgefest, I thought I suddenly blacked out. Turned out, Nappy Roots threw a sweaty ass towel into the crowd and it wrapped around my head. Lol. It was nasty, so I.gave it to some chick next to me that wanted it! It was a def 2 second wtf just happened to moment. The lights went out, but my eyes were just covered!

I got the guitar pic from I Don’t Know How But They Found Me at Castle Theatre in Blo-No, IL! Proudest accomplishment. I was rewarded well for being the most hype audience member 🤣

No, BUT I've been personally handed the setlist by the lead once while he was still performing the last song. And I've had a bass pick handed to me by the bass played once after a show finished while they were packing up

At a Macabre show, one of the guys came out dressed as santa & had a big sack of books about serial killers that he threw out into the crowd. I caught "Milwaukee Massacre", which is about Jeffery Dahmer.

Guitar picks from 10 or so acts and the weirdest a microphone cord Al Jourgenson of Ministry threw in the crowd at the end of the night, got into a tug of war for it with another guy it snapped in half so we each got a piece.

Last year, I went to a Deftones concert for my birthday, and I caught a pick from Chino after he played Digital Bath and the security guard helped me get one of Abe’s drumsticks (he threw it to me but it felt short)

Pantera 3/13/2001 with Nothingface, Soulfly and Morbid Angel at the Mid Hudson Civic Center in Poughkeepsie NY.. I caught a guitar pick from Dimebag and I caught a crumpled up set list off of Vinnie Paul's bass drum.
I carefully uncrumpled the duct tape and paper and put the set list in a plastic sleeve with the guitar pick. Two weeks later someone stole it from my bed room. Mid Huson Civic Centre, Poughskeepsie, NY, USA. with Soulfly & Morbid Angel.

As a blind person, this whole concept just seems dangerous. You can correct me if I'm wrong.
I've never caught anything, obviously. Me catching a random thing that somebody's throwing into a crowd of thousands of people is like me winning the lottery, not gonna happen. Lol

I got a setlist from The Used during their Medz tour. I’ve been a fan since the beginning and it was my first time seeing them.

Ozzfest 2002 my best friend and I were seated fairly close and during Black Label Society Zach Wild half drank and threw a Budweiser into the crowd and my buddy caught it and proceeded to chug the rest, mind you we were 16 years old lol. Later that same night during System of a Down I caught a drum stick at the end of the show, core memory type shit right there.

Over the years, I’ve landed various items from just being in the right place at the right time. A Ralph Molina (Crazy Horse)drum stick, NIN guitar pick from Twiggy, Cheap Trick guitar pick, Mummy Dust (Papa Dollars) from Ghost, a Jack White frozen Charlotte/Third Man certificate. Set lists from King Buffalo, White Hills and Rezn. Oversized glasses from Buckethead’s Toy Time.

I went to a Katatonia concert in March, and their fill-in guitarist Henric Palm threw his pick right at me. Nice Dunlop extra heavy c:
More recently, the drummer for Mastodon tossed a drum stick at me, but a taller guy next to me snatched it, since his arms could go farther than mine. Bummer, but still cool for him.

One more. In July 2011, I went with my kid who was 9 at the time to see Weird Al. He dressed up like a character in a song CNR, and his staff saw him and moved us front and center. They filmed the alpocolypse concert film there and we are in it a number of times. Al sent him the DVD & a zany photo of himself autographed.

I have gotten a bunch of picks and sticks over the years. Set lists as well. Had some encounters and gotten autographs (I have only ever done one meet and greet cause I don't care to pay that price). My absolute favorite item... A felt slip disc from Sid Wilson from the Slipknot ST 25th anniversary. I didn't get to see Slipknot in '99. I was 11. My Mom was cool but she wasn't that cool lol. Cliche and all bit Slipknot really introduced a direction of my music taste so seeing them perform songs from ST was a 😘🤌 for me. Getting center rail and going hard throughout the show may or may not have played a role, but I ended up getting a piece of Sid's gear. Just really unique. Bittersweet now with Sid out of Slipknot.

I once caught a packet of anal bleach thrown by John Waters at a speaking engagement in Seattle. He said it was given to him by Johnny Knoxville.

I once caught a towel thrown into the crowd by Dicky Barrett of the bosstones. Problem was a very large woman also grabbed it, looked me straight in the eye and said “I will fucking kill you”…so I let go.

Marilyn Manson live in Utica NY. Was in the pit when he was at pulpit and tossed a signed bible into crowd. I caught it. As well as several punches and kicks from those who apparently wanted it more.
