$200 dollar fan that I can’t turn off the lighting. It’s blinding bright.

Immediate refund. And next time don’t pay $200 for a fan.

Thankfully I didn’t pay 200 for it, but that’s what it’s going for according to Walmart and Amazon. Crazy..

There are browser add-ons that keep track of product pricing in a graph, it's pretty fascinating.
Some countries (and the EU) has regulations so that the "normal" pricing must be real at least for some amount of time during a year.
That's why they have so many promotions all the time, with just a few days in between when it is at the listed price.
By the end of the year it spent maybe 1 month at that price, just enough for the regulation.
And ofc plenty of online stores just don't give a shit and do it illegally.

So it’s not a $200 fan then

I mean that’s allegedly what all the stores sell it as. I got it second hand.

u/FairleySwordfish 9d ago
Well then, whatever you DID pay for it is the number to quote in the post
21
u/EnergyTakerLad 9d ago
Actually, no... its sold for $200 in stores, so it should be counted as $200 quality. OP isnt even saying that it works badly, just that the lights are too much for night use. You'd think a $200 fan wouldnt have such a design flaw.
6
u/Medical-Net-7350 9d ago
I see. Didn’t know. It seems to be usually that price and since I bought it second hand, the price I paid isn’t the normal price that everyone else pays.

$0.20 for some tape you can use to cover that up

Use some black electrical tape to completely block out all the light
82
u/mm56 9d ago
Buy a $1 bottle of black nail polish. It'll last forever and it looks so much better than the electrical tape.
58
u/homeguitar195 9d ago
Or better, buy a small (touch-up) bottle of black acrylic lacquer at the hardware store. Nail polish is just acrylic laquer at a steep markup in a cute even-smaller bottle.
43
u/mm56 9d ago
You need so little of it, that you're not going to run out if this is what you use it for. Also comes with a brush built in. And I literally paid $0.99 for my bottle on Amazon.
17
u/SkeezixLouise 9d ago
And like you said in your previous comment, it will last forever. There's a gal whose whole social media presence is about reviving antique nail polish. She's worked on bottles from the 40s (and maybe even older?) and gotten them useable again. The shit seriously does not expire!

The craziest thing is that people buy "special LED-blocking tape" for 5x the price, when any plain electrical tape would work exactly the same.
I've also seen small round stickers made for that, selling for 100x the price (a small sheet of stickers for $5). I assume they're made for people who aren't allowed to use scissors.

u/diymuppet 9d ago
I tried electrical tape and it left horrid glue that had melted slightly because of the heat.
Also tried a variety of stickers, blocked some light but not all.
I'm a big fan of using the right tools for the job, this stuff works a treat and didn't leave a mark when i had to move it.

A couple of layers of blue painters tape works well for me, and that way you can also remove it if you ever want to without having a lot of sticky residue left over
2
u/Independent-Heron-75 9d ago
On amazon you can buy tinted stickers to make led displays darker but still readable if you need. I have an ac i still need to read the temp setting etc it just makes it dark enough to sleep better.

u/lurking-bastard 9d ago
my father used air dry black nail polish. a thin enough coat and you can still see the light if you need to, but dimmer. and if you wanna block it out entirely, just put a thicker layer on

I frickin hate how companies add unnecessary LED flairs that serve no other purpose other than a crappy design
114
u/homeguitar195 9d ago
I hate how every LED seems to be blue now, for no reason. Oh, you wanted to glance at the time on the microwave clock while it's dark? You're too far away and can't read it because of the chromatic aberration, and as a side benefit now your night vision's screwed for a few minutes.
Nearly unreadable day or night. Just give me the red or pale green they used to be.
57
u/Grinchy-Grinch531 9d ago
It's weird. Blue Light became enough of a concern that people are using filtering glasses and devices have low blue light modes. Manufacturing/design looked at this and said "hey, let's make all of the indicator light on everything extremely blue."
13
u/Erzbengel-Raziel 9d ago
eeeh, most of the "blue light = bad sleep" comes from a flawed study that didn't have a proper control group. (a subsequent study showed that it's not blue light, but simply "a lot of light" that's bad for sleep)
Still stupid to make information indicators inteusive.
8
u/squeefruit 8d ago
Very curious on this topic, would love to read those studies if you have any links (that aren't behind a paywall)?
3
u/araidai 6d ago
This is the very few times I’d say AI might be your friend when it comes to finding paywalled data. It’s helped me out of a bind before lol. I usually ask it “Can you link me academic studies/papers about x topic?” And more often than not, it somehow finds pdf files that would normally be locked behind some form of lock/paywall, and since you’re asking it for links, it can’t really make shit up since it’s just listing data for you, rather than actively summarizing/generating new data for you. (I’d still 100% verify the papers themselves are of any value though)

u/nobody_gah 8d ago
Well blue light is technically more sensitive to our eyes than warm light in the dark at the same brightness so I think it correlates directly anyways. There's also a lot of research that blue light wavelengths does specifically inhibit melatonin compared to other colors

I bought a Bluetooth adapter for my car. It has a ring of rainbow LEDs around the dial and the cigarette lighter adapter...but the buttons aren't backlit so you can't see them at night. You can turn off the LED lights around the dial though! 🤦🏻🤦🏻
14
u/HoneyBear4Lyfe 9d ago
In a world full of horror and injustice, I feel pretty silly that the discovery of my fancy new stuff being covered in unturnoffable strobing LEDs fills me with unparalleled rage.

u/germane_switch 9d ago
Now I’m invested. Are you 100% sure you can’t turn off the lights? Did you read the manual? What make and model is it?
11
u/Medical-Net-7350 9d ago edited 9d ago
I can turn the light on the bottom that illuminated the floor off. The display lights at the top I can’t turn off no. It’s a Lasko Duo Comfort. here is the website
16
u/germane_switch 8d ago
I downloaded the PDF manual from that website and I searched for one word, light. It then explains how to turn off the ambient LED. That might be exactly the info you’re looking for. Give it a try? I have a feeling it does nothing for the top lights.
11
u/Medical-Net-7350 8d ago
Correct. It turns off the floor light, but the top lights no. They’re too bright to even look at during the day.
3
u/germane_switch 8d ago
Argh. I have a Winixx grow air purifier that has a night mode that’s dark but the fan is quiet. I need noise to sleep so I can’t use night mode at all lol. I wound up buying a set of assorted blackout stickers that cover the various sizes of lights on the filter. Like others have said here they are pricier but for me they are 100% worth it because they don’t leave any residue and they are designed for zero light passthrough. They come in black and white, too.
3
u/killershwee 7d ago
Lasko must have a hell of a range of fans. My Lasko was the cheapest oscillating fan Walmart had in stock at $20. For $200 I would have guessed Dyson or something. Other than the lights, is it worth it?

Sometimes these things have a brightness setting but it doesn't actually have 0 as an option, and the dimmest is still too bright in a dark room.

Gotta ask, what fan is it? An air purifier/ionizer I get but a regular ass fan? Even my Levoit room purifier has an option to torn off the leds
9
u/Medical-Net-7350 9d ago edited 9d ago
It’s a heater/fan combo.
I DID figure out how to turn off the bottom light that shines onto the floor, but the top lights cannot be turned off.
I’ll definitely have to take everyone’s suggestions here and get some electrical tape.
Edit: Didn’t know the brand until today, it’s a Lasko Duo Comfort.

u/Saradoesntsleep 9d ago

The heater aspect is likely why the light can't be turned off. It's following safety regulations. Can't speak to the brightness factor though.

The companies that make fans love to have lights inside that you can’t turn off so you end up tapping it over with electrical tape.

Lots of people are suggesting electrical tape, but they also make translucent tape specifically for this purpose, if you still want to be able to see the status lights. You can put on multiple layers to achieve the amount of dimming you want.
3
u/AiRaikuHamburger 9d ago
I recommend blackout stickers. I've stuck them over all the LEDs in my bedroom.
3
u/ZoeyBee_3000 9d ago
My three solutions: 1) electrical tape over the LED; 2) take some stuff apart and punch the light out myself; 3) return that shit and buy a new fan without lights

Maybe the wall switch or electric connection to the fan was done incorrectly? I just installed a bath fan and initially did it wrong and the light wouldn’t turn off.

Black electrical tape & various other colors of it. I’ve got it everywhere since they put clocks & lights on everything. I appreciate a digital clock in the kitchen, but I do not need a clock on: the stove, the ovens, there microwave, the dishwasher, & the refrigerator as well. More & more are LED for no good reason. Be sure to buy at least black & white electrical tape. Most smoke/other detectors come in white & have a bright green light on them. White will allow a bit of the light to shine thru (allowing you to see if it’s time to change the battery or if there’s a problem), although most have a sound alarm it’s best to get safe.

It's now covered in three rows of electrical tape and I just know where the buttons are. Kinda sad for what's supposed to be a high-end unit.
