Kitchen cabinets in my short term rental have holes.

Even googling I can’t find anything like this, weird.
Maybe they were heavily discounted and they were saving money on the remodeling.

I have a feeling these were like the floor models where it was for display purposes only so the shopper could get a sense of what it looked behind the panel. Like this is where the hood vent goes, this is where plates would be stored. I mean… idk why you need even that but that’s my guess.

That’s actually what I was thinking too. Floor model, one of a kind and now last year’s model so discounted.

Maybe it's a prototype

Little bit larger and it’s the same size as the sink.
Hey, maybe it was a kit kitchen and they put it together wrong.

Check. None of the cabinets are the same length or installed at the same level. The door handles don’t even line up.
Bad job all around.

Other than the obvious one over the range/microwave, they look the same height, and the tops are all level.

Ok. Commercial General Contractor checking in... these are probably a custom build - thats why you cant find it on traditional web sources.
What makes it crappy design? Obviously somone ordered it that way, i dont see the issue.

The very top hole that was probably meant to be symmetrical makes it a bad design.

Personal taste does not make crappy design

u/falingsumo 6d ago
If you can't see through the hole because it's too high it does

If there were truly a "design" issue, I would support it... you should see some of the crap I have to do as a GC not because an architect drew it, but because the end user (owner) wanted it...

This isn't designed asymmetrical. The right door is not properly aligned. Either somebody did a terrible job when mounting the doors or the doors developed some misalignment over time and would require readjustment that nobody bothered about apparently.

Are those "vents" so that you can put damp plates etc in there and they'll dry off eventually from the airflow (emphasis on eventually)? Sure wouldn't damage the wood.

That's what you have with every kitchen cabinet by default, or have you ever seen doors on them with air tight rubber sealing, like you have on fridge?
3
u/Mackarosh 6d ago
Obviously not but this allows more airflow. In any case it would be dumb to put anything damp inside as it would hurt the wood long before it dried properly

I did it for years in many households, it was usually fine, the plates were not dripping wet, but they were definitely not completely dried, nothing happened even after years of doing this

Here's my guess: Handles on the cabinet above the stove were mounted either vertically or too high from the bottom edge, and the solution to fix the problem was to cut the damage out as a "stylistic choice" and match that style across the other doors rather than replace the damaged doors.

I'm a woodworker and there's no way. We have ways of remounting handles and hidingthe previous placement, it's an easy fix.
Cutting all these openings, evenly, squared up, with mirroring curves, lining up perfectly with the cabinet opposite, and banding those edges (probably by hand because most edge bangers only do straight edges) is soooooooooo much more work.
They must have decided they need this, I just don't know why.

Is there a question here? It looks to me like nothing more than a design choice on the part of the Owner.

There’s your Crappy Design; handle holes on the wrong end. Or maybe r/onejob.

I can't imagine this being a stylistic choice. It must have been a custom build, they presumably must have served some kind of functional purpose.

Perhaps.. they wanted somethings to be easily grabbed without opening the doors? Either way, bad design choice.

Did you know that in this cabinet you have plates?!? And in this other one you can’t reach without a stepladder you could potentially have something else??!
Thank you, I hate it.

These look like cabinets intended for doctor’s offices, where they have openings to get out gloves and such. The one with the cutout way up top is probably a flipped door that got rehinged.

Perhaps to help damp plates dry?
Idk this one is pretty strange, I do like the style though. I would have just installed glass to fancy it up a bit

u/Isgortio 6d ago
This looks like they were supposed to be used for integrated bins and someone just put them on normal cupboards lol

Can you imagine throwing away your packaging UP, like you have an empty tuna can, but you have to lift it above your head LOL

Why is this crappy? It's functional, and stylistically it's not *that* horrifically bad. I could see people who are really into modern & retro mid century loving it.

u/Pewtiog 5d ago
Cooking is notoriously dirty. All that greasy steam will be coating the clean dishes 😭

u/NorCalFrances 5d ago
And yet, open shelf cabinets are very much a style.

u/cseyferth 3d ago
Not over the cooktop.
1
u/NorCalFrances 2d ago
Yeah, over the cooktop. I've even seen open spice racks right over the cooktop, which is pretty much the worst place to store them. But it looks nice, according to house flippers and magazines.

That was a design choice?
