General Discussion/Conversation Closed my HDFC Card
So about 45 days ago the HDFC RM reached out to me on his own, asking if I needed any services, new cards etc. I was holding 1 card with them (diners privilege) and using it in a low capacity since it didn’t suit my spending needs and style.
I told him the same that given my income (2L net/month), and salary account plus my LLP’s account with HDFC, I would appreciate if he could get me an upgrade. He suggested the regalia gold given this info and made me do the physical application for the upgrade and mail to Chennai.
It got rejected within a day. I was furious because I didn’t even want this in the first place. The RM came to me and made me do this cumbersome process, only to be rejected despite meeting all the criteria for the card and existing HDFC relationship. The RM still comes to me and tells me that he’s still trying since I do meet the criteria but 30 days in, nothing despite multiple follow ups.
I even gave him a warning first that I will be moving my HDFC accounts out given the inconvenience caused. And I’m sure any bank will be happy to take on a new customer for not just card, but for accounts.
Followed up on this promise and finally cancelled my card on the 31st. And I will absolutely be moving my accounts to another bank in the coming months.
Plus I got approved for the HSBC Travel One yesterday.
Long story short, don’t let your RM boss you around - there are plenty of banks out there.
Edit: My issue is not with the rejection of the upgrade. It’s the fact that the RM went out of his way to ask me for one, and then not even be helpful in finding the cause of the issue. I understand that banks have their own internal guidelines but lately it feels like they themselves aren’t clear on their approval rules.

Cumbersome process toh ab hoga bhai when you'll shift these accounts 😂

I do not doubt that at all haha
But if it helps me in the long run, it’s worth the pain

I tried to shift my account and they said my net banking (which was working last week btw) was disabled and it’ll take 24 hours to enable it

u/Frost1413 Sep 02 '26
No, it won't. Current accounts are very easy
You don't even have to close them just cut a cheque and transfer all funds to another
If he has a limit that requires an application but that too is very easy

u/kb_kills Sep 03 '26
Why? Start new account in say SBI. Update account info with employer. Transfer funds from HDFC

Felt the same with IndusInd when they themselves proposed Eazydiner Signature upgrade. 1 month later, they severely downgraded the benefits.
Not illegal, but in bad faith. Not violating T&Cs, but no empathy considering they proposed the upgrade.
I had told I don't believe, before the upgrade - there is no safety clause. For all I know, I pay ₹2360 annual fee today and they can downgrade the card next month. The branch employee said he will resign if it happens. He is also using it, so I can trust him.
He was pissed with IndusInd and really resigned, not that I asked.
In my case, I have also moved from HSBC to HDFC 😅, opposite of OP. It is just that these events undermine our trust, so we don't want to continue with them. To rub it in HSBC's face, also bought HDFC shares and sent them screenshot asking to learn some empathy from HDFC... but HDFC stock gave bamboo last month. Hope it recovers 🤞.
Summary: One can clearly tell RM interests with interaction. While making decision, evaluate if you really need it and your RM's motive.

“coming months” is too long of a timeline and very informal, it won’t flag anything in their systems.
Just move all your money out immediately and submit the account closure form. That’s when they start panicking.

u/tiramikd Sep 02 '26
Already started reducing my balance
But yeah fair point
20
12
u/broski694200 Sep 02 '26
"Reducing my balance"
That doesn't even do anything to the bank bro, take all of the funds out in a single go and ask them for closure, that's when they know you're serious. And if you are a worthy customer for them, they'll try and retain you
-2
u/tiramikd Sep 02 '26
No I know
I’m hoping to get a new role/pay bump up to 3L net and move to HSBC Premier. I’ve heard great things about their premier banking services and I live close to a branch too.
30
u/gamingtamizha Sep 02 '26
They wont care actually. banks have matured and things are no longer beneficial to the banks. If we customer behave the same way , instead of sticking to same back and keep moving every 2 years, we can see some response from banks
Unfortunately we customers are bound by things like account history, credit score blah blah
4
u/dj184 Sep 02 '26
If things are no longer beneficial to banks, they would have stopped services long back, like cash services in today's branches. No upside, just work.
They are after apple strategy, premium feel.

9
u/dumbadmins Sep 02 '26
It's a bank not your gf lol.
Banking and credit cards do not go hand in hand. HDFC and ICICI have one of the highest branch penetration within private banks and there are many issues that might invoke a branch visit which you cannot online. In which case, you can get screwed by banks like HSBC.

Just surrendered the Regalia Gold card . Now its higly devalued and using it was becoming headache. And they dont care
6
u/projectairbusFS Award Traveller Sep 02 '26
It's not? Lounge access behind 60k/QTR is absolutely normal to stop abusers like you from using it as a free lounge pass. Boarding Edge is genuinely great and I've extracted well over a lakh in value in <1yr of using it. It's no T1, but it's a card that punches above its weight.
3
u/Alarmed_Double_665 Sep 03 '26
Maybe cz it's your first year? Are you including the welcome benefits and vouchers in the 1 lakh benefit?? I can't wrap my mind around how Regalia punches above it's weight
1
u/projectairbusFS Award Traveller Sep 03 '26
My second year. And it's LTF for me so no welcome benefit either.
1
u/Infinite_Fuel_7659 Sep 03 '26
Buddy thing is that I am getting better rewards from other cards including lounges .Using MMT ICICI ,UNI ,Axis neo ,ICICI Amazon etc . All rewards have 35 max percent value on smart buy except travel and hotels .Did use them for travel but support was not good .Those were my issues .You may be happy but i was not .
1
u/Agitated_Cellist_443 Sep 03 '26
whats boarding edge? can you explain that? I have had the RG for the last couple of years and its only now that I have started using it properly, but dont really know where else to use it aside from flight and hotels.
Also do you know if lounge benefits expire in that quarter? I have used it heavily the past 2 quarters bit I have a flight mid october and I wont be able to hit 60k for that quarter in just 2 weeks
1
u/Fast-Post8904 Sep 04 '26
If you book flight from smart buy , you can submit your boarding pass in boarding edge platform in smartbuy which will give you complimentary lunch in 5 star \ Uber voucher of 700 Rs

I like when people think because they fit one of the requirements, they’re entitled to the card. Banks have various parameters to gauge this and your low spending was probably factored in in the rejection. While the whole RM debacle is silly indeed, the fact that you got upset over something you never wanted in the first place is probably good riddance on the bank’s end.
83
u/ChepaukPitch Sep 02 '26
He got upset over the fact that the RM made a suggestion, he had to do a lot of work, and then it was rejected. He is doing the right thing by closing his account.
5
u/desi_cutie4 Sep 02 '26
The best way would have been for RM to verify that OP should have been eligible in the first place and only then approach for upgrade.
32
u/tiramikd Sep 02 '26
No I totally get that.
And ideally that’s how it should be - but Indian RMs are very well known for bypassing the systems just to make a sale. And even here he’s the one who reached out and offered this upgrade option to me.
If there was consistency in the system, it wouldn’t be an issue but it’s like the banks themselves aren’t clear on their approval rules anymore-28
u/Exciting_Strike5598 Sep 02 '26
Your income don’t matter buddy ! You could be earning 10 Lpm and bank might deny you CC . Banks wants profitable customers- the spending kind . They don’t want stingy people who use CC solely for cashback & points and always pay back on time
11
u/Most-Trainer-8876 Sep 02 '26
Wait, if you don't pay back on time, then you will have even less of a chance to be accepted for any card regardless of which bank.
3

u/Sad_Bat_2711 Sep 02 '26
"Banks wants profitable customers"
Exactly why closing your account would make sense. It gives you extra negotiation power. Earlier the bank just weighed his cc profile. Now the bank might weigh in his cc profile and his other accounts and take decision accordingly which might be different.
It does sounds too brutal, but for banks that keep misadvertising, I believe this is justified.
A sales person opened HDFC salary accounts in my company with a long list of benefits - amazon vouchers, lauda lassan discounts, premium account with insurance benefits and what not. After opening account, I got nothing. Called the sales person, asks me to call customer care.
And dont defend bank here. If they put unrealistic targets for sales person without any check on bad marketting, this is supposed to happen. It absolutely there fault!
1
u/King_924 Sep 02 '26
Ppl don’t understand businesses are open for profits and specifically there profits. Indians have the high tendency of measuring bang for buck for every single rupee. Too much entitlement here.
-4
u/tifosi7 Sep 02 '26
I feel there are several factors that influence approval of cards and not fully deterministic. Moving bank accounts is more cumbersome, isn't it? I don't know if this impacts the RM more or you.
12
u/Powerful-Set-5754 Sep 02 '26 edited Sep 02 '26
You're saying he should not be upset for RM approaching him, making him do a bunch of BS work, and then getting rejected?
It costs nothing for the bank to provide him Regalia Gold. Whether he spends high or not - they still make money on annual fees. In fact, low spenders are probably more beneficial for the bank, they literally make "bank" on annual fees, without having to give too many points.
This good riddance is how bank will go down, one customer at a time.
9
u/Main_Steak_8605 Sep 02 '26
That is not correct imo.
The bank's representative reached out to OP. And then provided no help when they encountered issue.
That just shows how the bank operates.
This was an instance, OP did not want the card originally. But imagine if something that OP actually needs and now has to bear this bullshit experience.
Better to switch now when you have the leverage
3
u/Cautious-Direction55 Smartbuy Enthusiast Sep 02 '26
Being eligible for a card and getting approved for a card are two separate things that most people here don’t seem to understand. Read the post again, RM suggested go for a regalia Gold, it was never a guarantee. This is how “all” banks work, sales person and the credit underwriters are two different jobs.
1
u/Main_Steak_8605 Sep 02 '26
Not getting the card is fine
The issue is RMs behaviour. Looking from OPs post, he did try to get multiple follow ups with the RM and no update on it.
Neither did RM made the application process easier for OP not did they help afterwards
1
u/Cautious-Direction55 Smartbuy Enthusiast Sep 02 '26
Agree on the RM bit, I hate RMs for this reason. They only solicit business and push products but don’t really provide any “service”
6
u/Hungry-4-Info Sep 02 '26
Tell me you work for a bank. Without working for a bank.
Have you read the post? You would understand the OP frustration. But no, you're shamelessly here to defend banks, RMs and Corpos.
And OP, you're doing the absolutely the right thing. HSBC banking is solid from my experience. My HDFC experience has been decent too, nothing as terrible as this for sure.

Most banks suck at this and unfortunately you have to threaten them to get anything done or follow through with your threats.
I had to do that woth HDFC to get Bizblack card but their priorities redressal team came through.
However ICICI is dropping ball, I paid them 90k+ during last year for inward remittance settlement fees still they continue to give me stupid conversion rate, I will be moving to different bank soon, ultimatum is issues.
I will keep the account but the inward remittance will go to a different bank.
Unless there is a competition and customers willing to move, these banks will eventually at public sector bank service level .

Faced similar issue. I’d been holding a salary account since 2020 and met every criteria. Credit cards applications rejected for no solid reason.
Then RM offers LTF card to start journey so that they can upgrade in coming months and the LTF card which they offered themselves gets rejected lol
Moved out all my FDs and Salary Account to ICICI. Has been a pleasant experience last 3-4 months but will see how it goes with these guys.

u/Objective_Middle3225 Sep 02 '26
OP, In future, do all your transactions in credit card. Make a note of the expense and pay it off the next day. I don't fit any criteria for a diners club black metal but I have it because I spend a lot of money from my credit cards and they think I am a big spender when anything over 200-250 bucks I just charge to my card and then repay it via NetBanking. This also helps your CIBIL scores. While you earn a lot of money, enough to put you squarely in the eligibility for a premium card, your spending habits are low. Just an advice, don't hate on me.
1
u/Alarmed_Double_665 Sep 03 '26
Are you talking about paying of majority of the amount before the statement is generated? I do the same as you but will I be considered a big spender if I pay off before statement date? Asking cz I'm new

1
u/_vivek- Sep 02 '26
To be fair to the RM, only basic eligibility criteria are disclosed to the frontline sales force. Bank underwriting is much more nuanced and includes a second Scorecard layer which is statistical and is known only by the Risk teams. So in a nutshell - RM knows only the basic eligibility. Credit - knows the detailed underwriting rules . Risk - designs application scorecard which is not known to either.

u/GeologistMotor8912 Sep 02 '26
HDFc don’t care. Happened same with me and I moved my salary account. RM did same to me. I can get approval I can do this and that. Finally I upgraded card myself to Reg Gold and asked RM to F off.

I do not understand the reason pf mailing to Chennai. You have every you need. If not, I am ready to mail from my registered email address. What is the need of mailing?
You are ready to transfer my money using OTP, but credit card needs physical verification?
I am HDFC customer for 8 years now, preferred customer for 2 years, but I am really frustrated now.
Planning to move to Axis or HSBC soon.
1
u/DoesRealityGlitch Sep 02 '26
I’m having the same issue with HDFC. I have also a salary account with them, and I received the Diners Privilege cc when opened the salary account. They term it as if they’re giving you the best card, but in reality, it doesn’t suit the needs of most of the people.
I’ve tried reaching out to my RM and also emailed the HDFC team, but there’s been no progress for 2–3 weeks. My RM seems more interested in selling me health insurance than addressing my query, while the email team takes 2–3 days to respond, asks for the same details again, and then closes the ticket themselves.
I was simply asking for a yes or no on the Millennia card as per my need, but I don’t think they’re going to help. The only option seems to be closing my existing card, but then there’s a 6-month cooling period before I can apply for another HDFC card.
P.s: I have tried applying through the HDFC website/app, but it always says, You already have a card with us.

HDFC RMs are useless. I only have 2 credit cards (Millennia and Neu Infinity) and don’t even hold an account with them. I still was assigned an RM who bugs me to no end with personal loan, jumbo loan on card, etc. She calls me from the official 1600 number, so, this is not a random person scamming me. Last week she informed me that I have a pre approved offer for Biz Black and asked me if she could proceed. Told her that I am a salaried employee and do not hold a business or GST number. She initially argued that this is for salaried employees only and then told me that they offer it to salaried people as well. Laughed and told her to give it to me in writing. Of course she did not. She still calls me asking about my decision. I stopped picking up the calls now.
On a side note, the RM assigned to my ICICI salary account is equally useless. Don’t take it on your ego OP. All banks are the same.

This, felt a bit of a weird post.
I'm sure the inconvenience of applying and all was something, but for any rational person can't be a dealbreaker.
I don't find any misgivings or mis-sellings by HDFC in the post.
Only that your response feels a bit immature
1
u/creationk Sep 02 '26
It's a dealbreaker for a lot of people. Because there are better options out there
1
u/teckhunter Sep 03 '26
Better options sure. But what good is a better option you can't even use with his own admission. Not being able to use your current benefits and then upgrade to an upper one feels useless. Response wise it felt a bit of a lashing out, oh you can't give me card (which i didn't even want in first place) so let me transfer all my banking to punish the RM.
This is a kids response when he used to get out in the first over. Disproportionate and immature
1
u/creationk Sep 03 '26
What do you mean by what good is a better option? It is a better option. It's not about punishing the RM, it's about building better TRV at another bank with better benefits. High value individuals give business to the banks - they are not doing us any favor here. Having lived and earned outside India my standards of RM are high and my expectations are met with HSBC for example. Why shouldn't I move?
1
u/Alarmed_Double_665 Sep 03 '26
OP seems on a ego high, but I'm not and I can tell you it is a deal breaker. I've been pestered by my RM so many times to apply for a card even tho I didn't need it and I applied and I find out I'm rejected. Am I expected to discuss loans and bigger matters with a person like this? Somehow, in India we are okay with such bad level of banking.
1
u/teckhunter Sep 03 '26
I usually just say no. And even he admitted he didn't get the full use out of his card. So to get mad about being talked into an upgrade he very well knew he didn't need is off. If my RM talked me into a personal loan and then I was mad at him for EMI, i have to share some fault for that

These guys are not relationship managers, they’re more of marketing managers. For their basic services, they treat as favours and ask us to fill in feedback or take up some of their other services. Also, HDFC bank is going down the drain with their current customer service and attitude. No lack of banks out there, hope these guys come back to their senses and former service levels.

I'm also thinking to move out from HDFC. Only reason why I'm staying now is Infinia and free locker. But both can go out anytime.

Did you get the T1 card as LTF, FYF, or paid when you moved your account to HSBC?

Given how shit hdfc has been lately, I think a lot more people must have been doing it. I know I'm considering moving my account purely because dealing with hdfc is such as hassle. I also avoided taking a home loan from them because of service concerns raised by many over hdfc. These guys need to fix their services and their terrible reputation.

This is a flawed way of thinking...you should be supportive if you can...not the worst bank..we all can agree on that

You just got one rejection of card and you are thinking of moving your account? I my case my RM didn't even tell me diners black was lifetime free in the alumni programme when I repeatedly told him I needed the card. He sold me his crappy ULIP plan and said he can get me infinia. When I refused he stopped calling ever. Then one day he called me saying his boss will be calling me for his feedback so "please acha acha boliyega" (translate : say only nice things about me" I told his boss, I wanted change in RM. No action taken. Now a days my friends who have HDFC accounts have more knowledge than my RM.
