I can’t work out if this bloke is good or garbage

Karen Rolton oval is an amazing deck for batting, he was also dropped on a sky high ball early

he's perfect for the Redbacks white ball team, nothing more

The Karen Rolton Highway in this weather might be the single best conditions for batting on the planet.

lol He's still only 24, he's definitely playing more international cricket in the future.

So he's inconsistent af, that's pretty normal for young batters, let alone ones that try and hit every ball for six. White ball cricket is trending towards more big boundary hitters, that's why players like him and Owen keep batting the way they do because once it pays off it'll pay off big time.

He's your classic 'hitter without a good technique to back it up' type where his slashing will come off 1 game in 10 and flops embarrassingly the other 9 times.

u/averagerushfan England 17h ago

He's basically a baseball player who happens to be able to hit a bouncing ball

39

u/Nakorite Australia 20h ago

He’s both

He's Spider-Man lol

So he's good at being garbage? Or garbage at being good ?

u/lllDogalll 16h ago

So he's bad.

He plays high risk cricket pretty typical of how many approach List A these days. So when he's on he's on. Depends on if he's going to be on enough to justify the patches where he's just a turd. So far not even close so it's up to him to prove he can do it.

I think he's got a lot of talent but at the moment is more of an archetypal flat track bully. If the conditions start to favour bowlers then things tend to go less well, which has been a bit of theme for a while. When he was here in the UK playing club cricket he couldn't buy a run and his red ball record is patchy.

Will be interesting to see if he kicks on and adapts his game enough to be successful at the top table a la Warner, or is content making dollar on the franchise circuit.

his away record answers that IMO

u/Forsaken_Warning_475 16h ago

Garbage on anything other than a road, and above average on a road. Not very useful

The best batting talent from australia right now imo, insane raw skills but his reluctance to improve or his coachs inability to improve his technique are not making full use of that talent.

Just raw skills not going to get him far, needs to find out what works for him.

To his credit, has started playing some great back foot shots but lot of work to be done for him to be international quality.

Funnily enough i think he would've been better to persue a career in professional golf.

All he has is a good swing and good handle coord. He's not talented.

4

u/Mysterious-Drummer74 South Australia Redbacks 16h ago

He just hit a 50 from 14 balls.. does he have the skills to go further who knows, but to say he he’s not talented is just silly.

-3

u/schizoishere 18h ago

He is, picks length super early and has great wrists plus more time on his hands.

12

u/Wehavecrashed Cricket Australia 18h ago

Picks lengths early, can't do shit about it.

0

u/schizoishere 18h ago

Yeah it's why I said he has just raw skills, his one bat swing and many stuff in his technique are not making full use of that talent.

5

u/rbskiing 17h ago

Improve his technique?? You need to have one to improve it. Bet he hits a decent driver though…

3

u/hiddeninplainsight23 Hampshire 17h ago

Didn't he initially have a decent technique when breaking through in the Victoria shield side?

2

u/rbskiing 17h ago

Not really… was very leg side dominant

2

u/schizoishere 17h ago

Watched clips of his 2nd XI games last year, he had a technique even if i feel that was not suitable for him.

Hitting out on Karen Rolton oval is like the opposite of asking if someone can do it on a cold rainy night in Stoke, I don't rate JFM at all and tbh don't see him ever having any significant white ball international career for Australia unless he does a lot of refining of his game, he's just one dimensional plant your feet and swing away

u/TL-GTR The Australian Man 19h ago

yeah i think any big scores at KRO (or basically any oval with tiny boundaries) need to be pretty much asterisked.

remember when darcy short got that 257? issue was that it was played at hurstville oval which also has a road and short boundaries.

4

u/Bloody_Baron91 17h ago

I do agree with you but he played really well in that one IPL. Alas, he is never been the same again.

8

u/averagerushfan England 17h ago

IPL was also constant flatties

3

u/Bloody_Baron91 15h ago

Yes, I was just talking about standard grounds (albeit small boundaries there too) since that's what OP mentioned and mostly international quality bowlers.

Man Rory Delap era Stoke was king, genuine would have smashed Barca with a classic fucking.

27

u/Intrepid_Doctor8193 South Australia Redbacks 20h ago

Will the Redbacks ever lose again?

u/IntoThePeople The Australian Man 18h ago

More interestingly, McSweeney scored another 100 and now has an average approaching 50. Great time to get him into the ODI team and hopefully back into the Test team with some good performances similar to Renshaw.

Alas, our current white ball strategy seems to be stuff in as many bomb guys as possible, so JFM comeback it is

12

u/auspreacher Australia 18h ago

Talented fella but until he’s learnt to stop slogging every ball, I don’t believe he’ll make it in international cricket.

8

u/Omby07 New Zealand Cricket 16h ago

Did you watch the innings? He’s learning.

26

u/rko1994 India 20h ago

I like this guy. Hope he fixes whatever issues he had in his game, and then makes a comeback to the national side.

That 89 off 28 or something for Delhi Capitals a few seasons ago was incredible

It's been all downhill since then, until today

I'm not a fan of him, but questioning his lack of centuries isn't a fair criticism. Even if Jake turns out to be really good, he's never going to be a century maker. He is not, and will never be, someone who makes big scores.

Peak Jake is scoring 50+ scores at a strike rate pushing 140.

That's it, get him back in the ODI team for the next 4 years based on this performance

11

u/BeautifulRooster9313 19h ago

Most Aussie cricketers don't peak until their early 30's, so he's got a few years yet....

4

u/Grommzz 18h ago

All this to average 11 in the Big Bash for another year.

4

u/Brahman_Shady Iceland Cricket 17h ago

That IPL stint in 2024 at 50m Kotla boundaries did more bad than good for his career. The feeling of being invincible turned him into a blind slogger .

3

u/DiscoFever521327 Australia 15h ago

Classic QLD behaviour. JFM only seems to score runs against the Heat or the Bulls

3

u/FuckPigeons2025 11h ago

Only 72 (49) after that, that doesn't seem so fast.

8

u/blickt42 18h ago

Pet peeve of mine is people looking at a big hitter and saying he has loads of talent, just needs to apply himself. To me that archetype belongs to someone like Aidan Markram (not a big hitter but the rest is true).

The man averages less than 20 in FC cricket, and less than 25 in LA, batting in the best position a player can bat at. If he has loads of talent, he hasn't shown it.

those karen rolton oval stats are ridiculous. pitch must be a road.

1

u/Puzzman 18h ago

Damn he’s 24 now…

1

u/lxSmokeey 15h ago

Here is his one good performance for the next 12 months to keep getting him picked for national teams

1

u/Impactor07 Bihar 14h ago

Is he back? Was the talk of the town 2 years ago.

1

u/No_Knowledge_2802 12h ago

Is aus domestic back into flatie era?

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Air-221 9h ago

Straight into test team

1

u/Affectionate-Bowl392 16h ago

JFM is back 🔥🔥 Can wait to see him get picked in auctions and hit 20-ball fifties in the IPL 2027👌👌

0

u/nvenkatr India 14h ago

Interesting. If Vaibhav makes similar stats, he’s called a generational talent. But if JFM is on a resurgence, it raises doubts…

1

u/SusRampage 13h ago

Well there's like a 10 yr age gap to begin with

-1

u/ConfidencePitiful438 19h ago

That 14-ball fifty is just wild, if he can replicate that consistency, he might actually break into the national side for good.
