DISCUSSION Random tokens keep showing up in my wallet
Every few weeks, a random token I have never heard of appears in my wallet.
I know I shouldn't interact with these tokens, as they are usually scams. What I do not understand is why anyone would spend money sending them to thousands of wallets.
Are they hoping people will try to sell the tokens and somehow fall for a scam? Or are they just trying to identify active wallets so they can target them later?
Also, is there any risk from simply receiving these tokens, even if I never interact with them? Or is it safe to just ignore them?

it's like email spam but in crypto, they dust thousands of wallets hoping few people will get curious and go to their scam website. no risk from just receiving them, your wallet is safe as long you don't touch the tokens

Because tokens are free to make and gas is less than a penny and they payoff when someone falls for it can be massive

I haven't seen this said yet, so I want to share: If someone sends you a tiny amount of Bitcoin (dust), they may be trying to track your wallet activity. If you accidentally spend that dust together with your own crypto, they can potentially link your addresses and learn more about your holdings. The safest approach is to freeze the dust so your wallet never uses it in a transaction.

It's incredibly annoying to have to go through and hide and report these fishing tokens. But yes, the cost is relatively low compared to if they get you to interact with the token and it gives them access to your wallet so they can drain it, or get you to buy more tokens to make you exit liquidity or whatever the scam is. If you do it across a couple thousand wallets that have some amount of money in them - there's your payday.
