Reddit needs its own novelty accounts who do funny stuff like this.

There used to be a bunch. Think it just got too big.

It’s been so long, I’ve forgotten what old Reddit was like! The novelty accounts, the site wide lore that everyone somehow knew. It was definitely more whimsical than what it is now. I can’t even remember when I saw someone comment with the Reddit silver jpg

Anyone remember a certain boob? Gallow perhaps?

The CaptionBot vs CationBot "feud" was the funniest thing I saw that year.

i find people doing their own novel thing neat, but sometimes seeing people try to do the same bit someone else already did gets grating.

i'm talking about users on whenthe.

The jumper cables guy got me every single time

u/Mddcat04 1h ago

Yeah, that used to happen pretty often. Now it’s been years…

It happened to me recently, actually. I was on a post about some metal band I think, and this guy was telling me about a concert he went to. I didn't recognize him right away because I kinda got sucked into the story. He really got me reeled into it, but before I found out how it ended my dad beat me with a set of jumper cables for spending too much time online. I'm pretty sure that guy was Dave Grohl, I wish I had asked him some more questions.

Oh there's a bunch, but it seems like some people go full on loco for imaginary internet points and views.

One of the big ones was user Unidan

A wholesome one that I believe is still active is user Schnoodledoodledo who writes cute poems about pets and life in a kind of internet spelling aesthetic.

There's also poem for your sprog that also does comments poetry.

User shitty_watercolor has been viral on here plenty of times.

Unidan got banned like 13 years ago, dude

u/quidpro_PRON 1h ago

Lol yeah he did, good times

Is that second one still doing the "heckin doggo" baby talk?

4

u/quidpro_PRON 1h ago

Believe so, I know it doesn't sit well with some people

I remember it sometimes felt tone deaf, like someone would post a tragic story about the death of their pet and within a few minutes, there'd be the standard "i am le pupper, i hab fren"

Oh for sure. It came across to super insincere when the context are those kinds of sad situations you're describing.

u/BarovianNights Omg a fox :0 1h ago

Yeah that's the person who writes like they're actively losing braincells

Skeletor is around

u/Hi2248 Cheese, gender, what the fuck's next? 1h ago

Do roleplay accounts count? If so there's a bunch on various fandom subreddits

2

u/goblin_humppa27 1h ago

Respectfully, no they do not count. If the jumper cables guy existed exclusively in a subreddit where you can seek him out, no one would care.

Margaret Thatcher pops up in here occasionally.

Okay but according to Supereyepatchwolf’s excellent video essay What The Internet Did To Garfield, Jim Davis doesn’t draw Garfield anymore.

45

u/Luckierexpert 1h ago

He didn’t say that. He talked about Jim Davis having a talented team that can draw Garfield in the same way as him, and that Jim Davis may select a replacement at some point. Jim Davis still draws Garfield, just not all of it.

Go to 44:30 on Super Eyepatch Wolf’s video on Garfield, that’s where he talks about it.

I despise believable misinformation accounts. It's just not funny to spread lies. That's shit AI does.

Completely over the top misinformation accounts, however, are funny as fuc

"That's shit AI does"

Lmao as if humans haven't been making shit up for millennia

12

u/thaeli 1h ago

You’re absolutely right! /s

But seriously, yeah, humans have been making stuff up and saying it with a straight face forever. And it’s always been kinda obnoxious when it’s believable, though when the stakes were lower and we were far less flooded with weaponized disinformation, it was often funny.

u/RikuAotsuki 1h ago

Yeah, jokes stop being funny when they're indistinguishable from an actual problem.

5

u/JamieD96 1h ago

Yes, absolutely
