In other words, you should only be replying to other comments. Do not post top-level comments.

Keep discussion civil. Do not harass other users for having a different opinion. Do not use this thread to push your personal one-sided grudges against creators.

I was honestly worried for a sec that it was just gonna be Merlyn, but I'm glad it wasn't. So I'm gonna go with Connor Hawke and what happened to him in issue 2 was a fake out, either him or Emiko. The Oliver flashbacks are a good mix of tragic and bittersweet.

25

u/Melodic-Violinist-31 Sep 16 '26

Glad they’re going with the Collective angle. I Also say it’s Connor. Sins of the father and what not.

23

u/Dent6084 Sep 16 '26

Really good, intense issue. Merlyn's narration was well-utilized. So I figure it's either Emiko or Mia, and also that Roy is just knocked out, since he doesn't have the sores, and then Dinah will go all Canary Cry to save her dad. The Vlatava stuff is an intriguing mystery that's being set up here, presumably for the future.

22

u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! Sep 16 '26

Man, Hammond cannot keep getting away with it. So the Merlyn reveal was just a twist but there was also another twist as well at the end.

It definitely feels like ALL of this gonna lead to Dinah either developing her Canary Cry because of 'experiments' that were mentioned or she is taking up the Green Arrow Mantle. Because she knows too much now, about all these monsters.

17

u/TheGoddessLily Supergirl Sep 16 '26

Dinah taking over would make sense. The solicitions imply someone will die at the finale. It wont be Hector Hammond because hes too much of a big bad, and Dinah is the main character. I could see the Green Arrow Killer dying and handling the mantle to Dinah. Dinah has seen too much to go back to her Bodyguard job.

13

u/Resident_Glove_7761 Sep 16 '26

Honestly, the more this goes on the more I think Hammond could get it. Dude's too central to this plot, and too tied to events to let Dinah get away while he's alive. He's absent for part of this issue to deal with something "cosmic", so there's room for him to have one more GL appearance while being killed here, with the death possibly being a route to him being resurrected into a form like his main universe counterpart.

16

u/BlazeBigBang Barry & Wally Sep 16 '26

Man, the ending saying that it's obvious who he is has me feeling dumb because I'm lost now. I was camp Merlyn all along, so I'm out of ideas. Connor?

10

u/HeyItzMe_ The Question Sep 14 '26

Wasn’t expecting them to reveal in the preview

9

u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! Sep 16 '26

Well there is a reason for that, with another twist at the end.

7

u/Sufficient_Line8348 Sep 16 '26

I was very happy we did not get the full reveal here and another absolute BANGER of a issue the full panel stuff was great. I was just so into it and was so mad at the end because I wanted more lol

12

u/HopeFarron Sep 16 '26

Liking the book. I obviously need to do a reread of the book before issue 6 because I honestly forgot who some of the characters were due to the sheer amount of them.

3

u/Electric_jungle Sep 17 '26

I still feel robbed of getting faked out cus I stupidly looked at the preview... But great, tense issue. I have no idea who has going to be, but I'm putting my chips on Emiko.

1

u/SevenSulivin The REAL Man of Tomorrow 18d ago

I think it’s Hawke. All the clues point to it. The resurrective abilities of the drug, the fact Ollie’s genes woulda worked with it, Merlyn killed Hawke to throw them off the scent.

u/Mr_Wh0ever Sep 16 '26

It's good, I like how it incorporates the Jack Grimm stuff. The one thing I don't get is why Selina wouldn't recognize her if she went to jail for her "death", and she ended up becoming the most famous dead girl in Gotham. Beyond that I liked how the League of Shadows is formed.

19

u/tafaha_means_apple Cassandra Cain Sep 16 '26

I wish I could understand what exactly the League of Shadows is supposed to... do though?

It worked well enough as a culmination of Cass' character arc but as its own thing I have no idea what they're supposed to be doing.

16

u/Mr_Wh0ever Sep 16 '26

It'll probably be explained in Abs Catwoman.

16

u/tafaha_means_apple Cassandra Cain Sep 14 '26 edited Sep 16 '26

Can’t wait. Hope they end up doing something fun with Abs Cass

Edit: Some strong stuff. The art as expected is stellar.

The indulgent part of me might have wanted something a bit more "out-there" in terms of alt-verse reimaginings but I quite liked this all the same. They did end up going with pure-mute, can't talk at all Cass which is a let down in some ways, though I like the emphasis on touch and a compassionate hand as her way of communicating. Again, the art really coming through with some great visuals around a motif of touch and hands so I quite liked how it's all executed here.

Though I'm a bit confused how this tracks with her in Abs Catwoman because there she's still killing people (quite a lot of people). I guess currently in the main-run the compassion is a bit more, how might we say... situational lol? She's definitely put off by killing in general here so not exactly sure why she's blowing up civilian traffic and killing a billionaire auction house in abs Catwoman (the latter is more forgivable).

Other than that I was quite jiving with the flow of Cass' arc in this story. A good pacing and feeling of resolution for only 30ish pages. Appreciate trying to translate cass' canon compassion here (at least a Abs-verse version of compassion which apparently doesn't include road rage or billionaires tho again fair on the latter). It's more fighting for the despondent and those left behind here which ofc keys into Cass' experiences in the story. Throwing herself into the fray so that others can feel that someone is there for them when they need them most.

Tatsu's design is a standout. I like the samurai warrior vibe to it when she's usually a lithe ninja who happens to have a katana. That gets a thumbs up from me. I liked

A few other coterie of people showing up might be interesting Scandal Savage, Ben Turner, a surprise visit from an old friend from Cass' original batgirl run with Michael Sommers (Alpha), and Ebeneezer Darrk (i.e. Dr. Darrk)

Not a fan of the Shiva version here. It's quite boring. I think it's drawing from Tynion's Detective Comics #950 run with Shiva there. I think that because Cass ends comic with her founding the League of Shadows instead of the League of Assassins, and the Shadows was the group shiva was leading in TEC way back when. That was... not a very good Shiva back then and it's still not now. Both from the POV of how well it fits Shiva, but also I just think the whole "compassion is weakness" thing is done to death and half. It's implicitly abandoned by the end but still. No Bueno. I frankly don't know why you would pull from TEC 950+ for your inspiration for Shiva/Cass relationship when there's like at least 4 others that are way better. Even just pulling from Bryan Edward Hill's Outsiders run would be preferable. Might not matter given again that the story seems to end with Cass winning over shiva's ideology but eh.

How this ties into the story going on in abs Catwoman is a bit hard to say. Obviously this provided some more information on what happened with the Calicos with Selina apparently taking the wrap for the apparent murder of Cass as a child after the explosion. So that's probably what blew up their little gangly friendship there. I don't know exactly what Cass' goals are going forward. I get the impression she's actually the one leading the League of Shadows now as it's now named after her. Probably will attach to the taking down the Joker at some point if they are a recurring cast if I had to guess. Doesn't seem like Cass will be joining Bats any time soon or even hooking up with Selina. Cass currently has the LoS cast to do stuff with now.

12

u/Sufficient_Line8348 Sep 16 '26

I enjoyed this thoroughly more than absolute catwoman lol, I will say one thing that bothered me is this does not feel like a absolute version of Cassandra Cain. Like what makes THIS version of her different from the mainline version. That being said, I still had a lot of fun with this book and am curious to see what she does coming up

9

u/nat_astrophe Cassandra Cain Sep 14 '26

I had some trepidation about this because I haven't really enjoyed Absolute Catwoman, but the preview's got me hyped and seems more in line with the tone I would expect from an Absolute title. Matias Bergara is such a great artist.

16

u/Dent6084 Sep 16 '26

The final black-and-white fight was gorgeous stuff.

4

u/Electric_jungle Sep 17 '26

Stunning really. I and when it cuts back to color... Just great. This took me by surprise.

11

u/gosukhaos Sep 16 '26

Was pretty solid but I'm just burned out on Cassandra Cain books just revolving around her relationship with her mom. Can we at least do something different in an AU?

6

u/Electric_jungle Sep 17 '26

I think it's quite the opposite. She rose above her mother and set herself apart. You can't avoid the family connection, but it really should not be a relevant factor moving forward.

10

u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! Sep 16 '26

Well damn son. Absolute Cassandra really delivered. What a way to tie her to Selina, and knowing she went to prison because of her 'murder' but Cassandra have become mute because of the explosion. So she literally can't speak. And the twist that David Cain is actually the CARING parent. Man this world really is upside down.

It is nice to see though, Cassandra is not broken or molded to do bad things by Shiva. Instead, she resisted and won her own way. Getting Scandal Savage and Katana with her too after saving them. Her 'Shadow fighting' and beating Shiva at the end was epic. Showing her a new way and that they didn't need to lead alone when they can do it together, while dealing with a literal monster in Joker.

I wonder if Cassandra will team up with Selina in the end, to work against the Joker. After all, HE is the source of ALL their problems.

5

u/ScriedRaven Sep 16 '26

Cass is putting together a team, with bonds forged in fire, whereas Selina is doing everything in her power to go it alone. Really wonder where the League of Shadows is going

Also Joker actually had Batmans training arc. I thought that was just a joke, but he probably has Tibetan Monk powers. Bruce is worse off than I thought

5

u/superbat210 Sep 17 '26

Ngl, I feel like Absolute WW and Absolute Cass would get along. Diana would be the mother this girl deserves!

3

u/MrSuitMan Sep 17 '26

I don't want to be too overly critical of Bengal's art on the main Absolute Catwoman book because overall I think it's still pretty serviceable. But it really is revelatory how much a great artist can really elevate a  story by written the same writer. Catwoman has been fine but I haven't been loving it. Reading through Cassandra Cain has been an absolute blast. Matias Bergara's art is so dynamic, expressive methodical, and gorgeous, and breathes life into Che Grayson's writing in a way I feel like Bengal's art hasn't been able to. Makes me really wish he was the main artist on the Catwoman series instead.

7

u/threebuffsharks Sep 16 '26

Me when they announced this: "sheesh another spinoff for Absolute? Come on already."
Me after reading it: "Holy crap please make this an ongoing I want more."

3

u/Electric_jungle Sep 17 '26

She deserves an ongoing for sure. But at least she's going to be a character in Catwoman moving forward. I know that book hasn't been a big hit, but it's got a story than can get there.

2

u/MasterOE Green Arrow Sep 16 '26

I am expecting Richard Dragon to join them or at least run into them at some point.

3

u/UnknownEntity347 Rorschach Sep 16 '26

Ngl, this was disappointing.

I was expecting something a lot more different and unique, and instead what we have is pretty much more or less Young Justice Cassandra: fully mute due to injury, more heavily tied to the League of Assassins, and swapping out David Cain for Shiva as the person who trained/abused her. It's not necessarily bad, but there's a lot more unique ways to go. The idea of David Cain not being a bad dude in this version is interesting but doesn't really have much impact since they just do the training from hell story with Shiva instead anyway.

This story overall still just rehashes the Cass V Shiva story which after Brombal's Cass run did that for so long I have gotten sick of. And the story builds up to her rejecting/leaving Shiva as main universe Cass did to David Cain but then just has her team up with her in the end instead to I guess stay with the League of Assassins? Why? That's kind of a lame conclusion to the buildup.

On the positive end, the art is fantastic, especially the one bit where she's fighting blind. It's a cool gimmick and I hope it's used more. The start was cool, it was nice seeing the events described in the first issue of Absolute Batman and how Joker did his Batman Begins thing.

I really hope this Cassandra goes in more unique and divergent directions later on.

u/Landon1195 28d ago

Good first issue. Enjoying this version of Cass and excited to see more.

11

u/ScriedRaven Sep 16 '26

Ra's, ripping off the style an overrated X-Men villain is beneath you. I like the concept though, biggest problem is that you had to bring in some nobody for Death

Poison Ivy, leading villain of a crossover and still getting work as a minion, busy month for her

9

u/SansSkele76 Absolute Wonder Woman Sep 17 '26

So Bruce's plan is to get Wally to find Mirror Master so they can make a vaccine for the mirrored virus? Clever.

14

u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! Sep 16 '26

So Ra's got his 'Ecoterrorist Legion of Doom'. And most of the Justice League are away so only Batman and Superman, with whoever left behind have to deal with the 3 fold attack.

Come on Batman, you have Kid Flash and Superman who can move around the world fast as hell. You can handle more than 2 out of 3. And Mera definitely can handle Ocean Master with her powers. She doesn't need Arthur for that.

-3

u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest Sep 16 '26

I like that Ra’s Al Ghul recruited Poison Ivy, Queen Bee, Ocean Master, and Tokamak (who made his debut in 1983, not the 1970s) to create the Four Horseman of Apocalypse, causing Talia to tell Clark, Bruce, and Dick about all of this; Bruce to be there for Dick at the hospital after he was infected by something; Clark to find Queen Bee; and Bruce contacting many heroes to deal with it. Let’s hope that Clark and Bruce and Dave save Dick, defeat Ra’s and his four horseman, and save the world in this storyline. Also, Wally West Kid Flash cameo because Mark Waid wants to write more of Wally’s adventures as Kid Flash (not the Flash, since he felt that it’s complete, which is fair and good). Overall, this comic is great!

This is basically exactly what you want from a tie-in. It uses the backdrop of the event to enhance the overall narrative of the original title's story in character, plot, and theme. Genuinely suspenseful, the way it ups the pressure on Dick is really great (especially with how it's now building out his relationship with Bisogni), and the way the story of the guy who lost his son unfolds is terrific. Can't wait for the next issue.

9

u/elizabethdove Sep 16 '26

I really really liked the borsogni interaction, it was super interesting and has me looking forward to seeing what happens next between them.

8

u/Electric_jungle Sep 16 '26

I wanted to say this as well. So well done. I'm reading Batman and I'm reading Nightwing. I don't care that much about bad seeds, not saying it's bad, it's just where I'm at. Such a good tie in that me not knowing what's going on in Gotham is exactly how much info I need to appreciate this story. We don't know what's up in Gotham but it's still affecting us. And it's exactly the type of stories we've gotten this entire arc. Fits like a glove.

9

u/UnknownEntity347 Rorschach Sep 16 '26

Good issue. Nice character stuff, a neat premise, and ayyyy a Damian teamup! I hope the next issue delivers on that dynamic.

13

u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! Sep 16 '26

When Gotham sneezes, Blüdhaven catches the cold. I was gonna be annoyed that the event is distrupting the book's plot but it actually adds to the stress and the complicated situation Nightwing has with another corrupt mayor who thinks he is doing the 'greater good' thing.

And the poor guy who lost his son and was ready to end it all, blaming Gotham ( kinda rightly so )...And then a wild Damian shows up. Well I AM looking forward to them teaming up again in this craziness. And Dick really needs someone to look after him, with Barbara being in prison. I guess this is why Bruce sent Damian to check on him.

-4

u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest Sep 16 '26

I like that Dick received an unlikely call from Bisgoni about what’s going on, causing Dick to try and save Benjamin James (who lost his son) from doing something and for Damian to appear. Overall, this comic is good.

-6

u/Godlike013 Sep 16 '26

This was a boring story, thats over written and hard to look at, where Nightwing ultimately fails again.

Batman Day 2026: Batman of Two Worlds #1

Matt Fraction's Dark Knight meets Scott Snyder's Absolute Batman in this Batman Day 2026 one-shot.

30

u/Jonn_Jonzz_Manhunter Sep 16 '26

This is incredibly mid. Neither of them are real stories, just action scenes with a half assed narrative over the top. I know what both writers can do with a small number of pages and this is not it

The art in both was, predictably brilliant though

5.5/10

5

u/Electric_jungle Sep 16 '26

It wasn't in my bin today, to my disappointment, and sold out. So this makes me feel better. It being the only part of either run I'm missing is a bummer.

3

u/halfstreetbeat 28d ago

If this never gets collected, it really wouldn't be a loss.

9

u/AllTheRowboats93 28d ago

I was really looking forward to “each version of Batman tackling the same scenario” but it didn’t really live up to that premise. That being said, each story was fine enough and I liked all the art. I guess I was just expecting something more.

7

u/TriPolar3849 Cassandra Wayne 28d ago

Not at all what I was expecting so I'm kinda disappointed lol. I thought they'd be facing the same villain and just deal with it in their different ways.

I'm struggling to even see what's really connecting the two stories. Mainline Batman is just dealing with some security guard sell-out and Absolute Batman was dealing with some shady bank guy taking advantage of lower income citizens. Is the guy on the plane supposed to be the mainline version of the bank guy? They're both about someone not doing their job I guess idk

5

u/halfstreetbeat 28d ago

$3 and it still feels underwhelming. Art was incredible though.

6

u/gmark109 Grayson 29d ago

Really not a whole lot to discuss in this book to be honest. Pretty disappointed.

3

u/Landon1195 28d ago

Really underwhelming. Art was good in both but the premise didn't live up to its potential.

1

u/worditsbird 28d ago

I liked the 2nd part where Alfred is thinking its time for the old guard to let the next generation make their choices and steer their own ship. Then i liked how the guy was bragging the whole first issue and then you see hes right next to Bruce like hes gonna take care of it in the end.

1

u/Never-Give-Up100 27d ago

My comic store either didn't know or didn't care about the release date and put it out on wednesday, so I had mine for a few days now. It was extremely mediocre. At first I thought they were going to cross over, but when I saw that wasn't the case, I was hoping for at least a good stories. Nope. Just bland action scenes

0

u/WonderImpressive2222 Sep 15 '26

Interesting 🤔

0

u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest 21d ago

For the Batman part, I like that Bruce was able to encounter two criminals in Gotham before he met someone who has been a security guard for twelve years. Also, Bruce with the Batboots and doing parkour, which is cool. Overall, this is a good backup.

For the Absolute Batman part, I like that Bruce was able to defeat criminals and learned what caused the building to be off at his job. Overall, this is a good backup.

Batwoman #7

It was supposed to be a quick return trip before heading back to Greece, but with Batwoman now seen as a cold-blooded killer in the public eye, Commissioner Savage declaring open season on anyone who wears the Bat, and Poison...

14

u/Dent6084 Sep 16 '26

Really liked Bruce and Kate's interactions here.

8

u/ScriedRaven Sep 16 '26

Lol, they actually thought she was a vampire. Good, I like when the bats are pseudo mystical

8

u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! Sep 16 '26

I guess it is fine for Kate to let out some of her frustrations with all the stuff that happened by beating the brownshirts of Vandal Savage in this event.

-5

u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest Sep 16 '26 edited Sep 17 '26

It’s just Kate, after arriving home from Greece, dealing with Savage’s TUCOs in Gotham. That’s it. Also, Kate having a talk with her dad and Bruce (who is her practical uncle, since it’s unnecessary for Kate and Bruce to be cousins and that Bruce fell in love with Kate’s aunt Kathy Kane, the original Batwoman, back in pre-Crisis Earth-One’s 1950s and early 1960s). Overall, this comic is okay.

Noo, don't close the connection between the universes. It was great. Damn you LEXEGG gates.

It was such fun to see Sonic characters just making fools of the Legion of Doom. And damn, Cheese have seen some sh*t.

6

u/SonicSpiderRanger10 Bizarro Sep 16 '26

There’s still the hope we can see them meet again someday.

14

u/KrispyBaconator Sep 16 '26

Ok so Cheese the Chao > Sinestro confirmed

Man, what a fun crossover. A part of me is glad they’re (seemingly?) ending it here before things start getting stale but man I also wanted to see what other crossovers we could get in this series. Hopefully Sonic and Flash agreeing to a race at the end is a tease of more to come

3

u/Melodic-Violinist-31 Sep 16 '26

As much as I Hope so that was Essentially just the writers/companies agreeing as per standard that they will Not answer who’s faster. It’s always like that.

2

u/SonicSpiderRanger10 Bizarro Sep 16 '26

Why did you capitalize the h in “hope” and the e in “essentially”?

1

u/Melodic-Violinist-31 Sep 16 '26

Caps lock. Keyboard is a bit finicky.

5

u/Night-Caelum Sep 16 '26

And so it ends..... The backup team fighting the Legion was actually pretty fun. Sinestro losing to Cream and Cheese solidifies him as a fraud along with Cheese using the ring to summon Metal Overlord (he is scary) and Big just no-selling Black Manta were hilarious (ofc he thinks cuz he fishes he can't be that bad). I love how Supergirl was still shown as protective over cream. It did feel a little anti-climactic in how easily the Legion went down and everything was resolved. And the gates are closed......bittersweet but the endin gave me feels in showing that the experience is something they'll never forget. Overall a fun series but I do think compared to the previous one it felt lacking in some areas such as character interactions (wish we got more and new dynamics) and the threat kind of felt low stakes in how easily it was resolved. Felt like more of a filler or middle series at times but still enjoyable.

3

u/SonicSpiderRanger10 Bizarro Sep 16 '26 edited Sep 16 '26

lol, Cream and Cheese beating Sinestro was funny, and so was Cheese using his ring. Boy, this might just be the lowest point in Sinestro’s history. It was also funny when Aquaman and Black Manta fought right in front of Big while Big just stood there, and Manta just ignored him. 😁

3

u/SonicSpiderRanger10 Bizarro Sep 16 '26

I hope we get another Sonic x DC crossover, someday. There’s still so many good DC characters who weren’t featured. Mr. Mxyzptlk, Bat-Mite, Bizarro, etc.

2

u/SonicSpiderRanger10 Bizarro Sep 16 '26 edited Sep 16 '26

Well, that was a good ending and a fun crossover, but to be honest, the ending felt rushed and a bit anticlimactic. This maybe could’ve used another issue. Plus, the main Sonic heroes and the Justice League were barely in this issue. Also, it’s too bad Silver couldn’t keep that green power ring.

2

u/Frontier246 Sep 16 '26

Blaze looks great in Starfire's costume.

Honestly I respect Black Manta's absolute zero-focus on killing Aquaman above all else but he didn't account for Big in all his OP wholesomness.

First time I've ever seen Cheetah get called a "Magical Girl."

Kara was really thicc here. Also I love Cream calling her out for her language.

Cream vs Sinestro. Always look out for the Chao!

Cheese with a Yellow Lantern Ring. METAL OVERLORD AS A CONSTRUCT.

"Death Lex Egg" - I knew they were going to go with that name but that didn't make it any more satisfying when they said it.

Ah, so they're back to "normal" with the split worlds but they'll reunite someday I'm sure...so Sonic and Flash can finally settle who the fastest is.

I am sorry, I am just not interested in Adeline becoming the 'new Deathstroke' and some new rewriting of her and Slade's past.

3

u/CrispyGold Sep 17 '26

I don't know, I actually like how this run is re-establishing Adeline's importance and role to Slade as both his creator and mentor.

Adie is his superior officer and a high-ranking CIA agent. She isn't just a long-suffering wife, she's a monster in her own right same as her husband.

Its pretty interesting.

Fun enough issue. Flashback and setup after the big conclusion of last arc but that's fine for now.

9

u/PigeonDetective_ Damian Sep 16 '26

Well I'm glad "Golden Form" is gone, it always felt a little too DBZ for me and I imagine a very hard thing to write around.

15

u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! Sep 16 '26

Well I guess that is one way to 'fix' Clark and deal with the powers at the same time. He did his Superman thing as expected, cured the whole world in Golden Form under 200 seconds AND healed his body back along with his eye. But the biggest loss was his beard. Boo. And no golden form anymore it seems. And Lana's 'Superwoman' powers are gone too.

Nice of Jon to deal with the Femadicator. And seeing his blue form again. Though I still think the 'Tomorrow Man' suit looks dumb with the mask.

So are they really gonna do the 'well we killed Zod in the current timeline. So we will bring the past version of him into the current timeline instead' plot? Wouldn't that basically break the past?

11

u/Mr_Wh0ever Sep 16 '26

A good number of plotlines wrap up here. Lana losing her powers isn't that shocking. But I'd rather have Kara or Paige claim the mantle. Supes saving the world in 200 seconds was cool. Jon presumably getting a new enemy in Eraditrix is a nice addition to his rogues gallery. And it's looking likely that somehow past Zod will become the replacement for dead Zod. Unless there's another twist next week.

-3

u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest Sep 16 '26

I like that Clark (after getting cured from the Kryptonite infection thanks to Lana), in his golden form, spent the next 200 seconds saving everyone (including the villains because he’s Superman) from the entire world, destroying the El Caldero Kryptonite, and spending the last few seconds saving Lana (resulting in the end of her Superwoman career again). Also, Clark with his DC One Million suit as Superman-Prime, Jon defeating Eradicatrix using his electric powers, and a past version of Zod planning to use the time machine to rule present-day Earth. Overall, this comic is excellent.

Well one good thing about Vandal Savage being immortal, Batman doesn't have to hold back when it comes to dealing with him. Seriously though, after this nonsense, almost killing hundreds of thousands of people with the Herbicide he was trying to release, Batman should just call in the JSA so they can take Vandal Savage away and lock him up.

I always like when people who were saved by the heroes in their past return the favor and do the right thing. Now, time to find Mr Freeze and see if he will do the right thing as well.

Rhetoric? Interesting synergy with the Lego Batman game. A game which is surprisingly great.

3

u/PigeonDetective_ Damian Sep 16 '26

It reminds me a lot of the Nocturne arc, Batman also went to Freeze to slow down the Azhmers. Nocturne was much better imo

3

u/gosukhaos Sep 16 '26

This was pretty good if a little too fast paced for my liking but after a fairly uneventful Batman it's some plot progression at least

Not a huge fan of Sook's layouts coming from Scalera's work, the art is very pretty but it feels claustrophobic and small for an issue where the bulk of the action takes place on a rooftop and on blimps. Too little background art which for a Batman comic is kind of a sin

-9

u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest Sep 16 '26

I like that Bruce teamed up what Savage to save Gotham from Ivy before Bruce defeated Savage because Savage was going to let people die in order to save Gotham, dealt with Savage’s TUCOs, and witnessed and officer not follow Savage’s order because he had saved her life from the Joker decades ago. Also, Bruce needing Victor Fries’ help in the final page. Overall, this comic is good.

For the backup, I like that Bruce encountered a new villain named Rhetoric. Overall, this backup is interesting.

I guess this was an improvement over the last issue because this one actually has a plot but man, as a big fan of the Titans (and who really appreciated the first issue of Higgins' run) I really just do not give a shit about this iteration of the team.

I know that's a strong thing to say, but this team could just as easily be called "Young Justice", "Super Young Team" or "Champions" and nothing would really change. There is nothing uniquely "Titans" about this team. It's a pretty generic teenage superhero team.

And it has too many characters. And none of them seem to even really like each other. Why are they the Titans? We are seven issues in and we have no idea what really brought this team together, how they all met each other or what happened to the Members that left and I suspect we aren't going to find out.

9

u/Ft_lucy Sep 16 '26

I agree, this boom feels like it wanted to be Young Justice. Naming their base “Mount Titans” is a huge indicator of this imo. I wouldn’t be shocked if Brombal was either banned from using the name or the YJ crew.

8

u/UnknownEntity347 Rorschach Sep 16 '26

All of this, took the words right outta my mouth

9

u/ptWolv022 Sep 16 '26

I know that's a strong thing to say, but this team could just as easily be called "Young Justice", "Super Young Team" or "Champions" and nothing would really change. There is nothing uniquely "Titans" about this team.

I've heard people say something like this about this series before, and, as someone newer to comics, I can kinda understand it and kinda can't, in relation to what is "uniquely Titans".

On one hand, the crew is in "Mount Titans", their rebranded Secret Sanctuary, which Young Justice had also used. They also have a Superman Family member, like YJ and unlike earlier iterations of the (Teen) Titans, alongside a 90s Bat sidekick.

On the flipside, the Young Justice line-up came together after the end of the 1996 Teen Titans led by Atom and became the new Teen Titans following "Graduation Day", a role that that generation held for ~13 years, into the New 52. What's more, a third of the roster is old school Perez-Wolfman/NTT-era Titans.

So, I've never really been able to figure out what the missing sauce is when people say "This isn't Titans".

Why are they the Titans? We are seven issues in and we have no idea what really brought this team together, how they all met each other or what happened to the Members that left and I suspect we aren't going to find out.

I mean, they got brought together by Eva and the human half of Vic to help free the members of the team who had already been captured by Robo-Cyborg, selected in part because Robo-Cyborg wouldn't have the same level of detail and data on them that he has on the classic Titans. That's the premise of the first 3 issues.

It's true that we haven't seen Donna, Roy, Gar, or Raven, but I kinda am... happy about that? Like you said, there are a lot of characters, and taking time to dispose of the other four 1980s members not being used seems like it would hurt the actual cast of the book by taking their limited time for... effectively guest characters.

4

u/Every-External-2180 Sep 17 '26 edited Sep 17 '26

So, I've never really been able to figure out what the missing sauce is when people say "This isn't Titans".

The Titans from Wolfman/Perez onward, at least the way I see it, are supposed to be about a bunch of orphans forming a found family to rebel against their parental-esque authority figures.

This theme is all over NTT, with Dick wrestling with being Robin, Starfire and her older sister who sold her to slavery to steal the throne, Raven and Trigon, Beast Boy and Mento/Galtry, Cyborg's complicated relationship with his father, etc. Their biggest villain is Deathstroke, who is responsible for the death of his children and the other one being disabled, while he has a butler in Wintergreen and a sidekick in Terra (think about who that reminds you of).

You mention Johns, and while I'm not the biggest fan of his run, I think he was aware of this. You had Conner struggling with the revelation he was partially a clone of Lex Luthor, Cassie defying WW to stay in the team and being harassed by Ares. Johns has Bart get shot in the knee by Deathstroke to symbol the Titans are not Young Justice.

None of these themes seem to be really present in this book so far, outside maybe Yara Flor a bit this issue (but the Esquecidas are meant to be allies, so I'm presuming it's not lasting long).

Then you have that all the classic Titans symbols and rogues gallery are basically just gone from this book.

Higgins in one issue also tried tying his Titans to these themes by modernizing how the new Titans met (through Discord, because that's how teenagers form connections nowadays), how they took the name because they are inspired by the classic Titans teams, how the institutions failed those teens, there's a scene where Fairplay rebels against Mr Terrific, etc. It's better thought-out.

I mean, they got brought together by Eva and the human half of Vic to help free the members of the team who had already been captured by Robo-Cyborg

I mean, sure, I get that, but by that same logic he could have called Beast Boy or Wally West or Batman or whoever else.

Even if we accept there is a reason why only those characters could rescue Dick, Kory and Tara from the simulation, the way it's presented it doesn't even really make much sense for the New Titans to stay together as they seem more like a contingency team.

seems like it would hurt the actual cast of the book by taking their limited time for... effectively guest characters.

Okay, but Brombal did not start from issue #1. He started from an issue #33. And the book was effectively sold as a continuation of the Taylor/Layman runs. Why are so many covers for this run early on focused on characters like Beast Boy or Raven who are effectively not in the book at all?

And Brombal did use those characters. He used them to do metacommentary in the first issue while not bothering to comment on why they left or how the new team came together.

2

u/ptWolv022 Sep 17 '26

The Titans from Wolfman/Perez onward, at least the way I see it, are supposed to be about a bunch of orphans forming a found family to rebel against their parental-esque authority figures.

How does the rest of the Titans' history fit into that? The Silver Age Teen Titans does fit into that (and, indeed, it's that era that Higgins has said, IIRC, he was trying to tap into with the "rebellious" nature of the team) as a bunch of kids eschewing their mentors for crimefighting with their contemporaries/cohort.

But the team Wolfman had by the early early 90s was mostly totally different and the team after Zero Hour was yet again overhauled. The 1996 iteration is all new, and the late 90s Titans had a mash-up of everything. And the 2003 series went long past Johns' run. What about the Rebirth teams? The New Justice revamps of the teams?

I'll also note that you're bringing up Terra in the context of being a Robin to Slade's Batman, but she came into the book in Issue #26- over two years into the book. A lot later than 7 issues in.

I mean, sure, I get that, but by that same logic he could have called Beast Boy or Wally West or Batman or whoever else.

I mean, why doesn't the Justice League solve everything and we can just stop having any new teams? I mean, the Silver Age 7 can solve most anything, so there's not really any reason for there to be other teams when they can handle any major threats.

(But also Beast Boy and probably Wally would be some of the people that Robo-Cyborg would have the absolute most data on, due to having been Titans. Even Batman was a JL teammate of Vic, meaning Robo-Cyborg would also have data on them. The new New Titans all are newer characters or have new power sets (Steph with fancy new tech, Red Devil with new magic) that Robo-Cyborg didn't have much data on.)

Okay, but Brombal did not start from issue #1. He started from an issue #33. And the book was effectively sold as a continuation of the Taylor/Layman runs.

I'm not sure it was really sold as that at all. I mean, it was a new writer taking over after an event as part of a major new DC initiative with the title literally having "New" appended to it and the first cover of the run prominently displays 4 new recruits. To me, it was very clear this was meant to be something new.

Why DC kept the numbering, I don't know. It really wasn't the smartest branding, especially with a new Teen Titans book launching. My LCS actually missed an issue of NT for me at first because they thought it and Teen Titans were going to be the same series.

Why are so many covers for this run early on focused on characters like Beast Boy or Raven who are effectively not in the book at all?

Not just "effectively", they aren't :P But that's not really something you can fault Brombal for. DC made those variant covers, not Brombal, and variant covers often aren't reliable data points/depictions of the book. The main covers or specific types of variant covers (like foreshadowing variants) are the only ones you can trust. The rest are just the company trying to make a quick buck.

2

u/Every-External-2180 Sep 18 '26 edited Sep 18 '26

I mean, of course there are a lot of versions of the Titans, but most of them aren't well-remembered (or even remembered at all) so I don't really see the point in acknowledging them.

So I stuck to the ones people know like Wolfman's or Johns'.

I mean, what can anybody really say about that time the Titans were a team of mercenaries supervillains led by Deathstroke? It just sort of happened. It's forgotten now.

Even then, some of those runs you mention did tie into these themes, like Adam Glass' run post-No Justice.

That's not really something the book says. And Red Devil was a Titan anyway alongside Vic. It's pretty arbitrary.

It's misleading regardless. Brombal and DC did use those characters to sell the run.

2

u/Otherwise-Affect-376 Sep 16 '26 edited Sep 16 '26

what do you mean by uniquely "Titans"? Titans and Young Justice aren't that much different from each other outside of Young Justice being more lighthearted for the time.

8

u/Ft_lucy Sep 16 '26

Another setup issue, but at least this seems to the start of a full story arc. Seems like issue eight will be the one that finally kicks the plot into gear. Theres some interesting stuff in here, like Eva’s connection with the probable villain of the arc, but there isn’t much time to do anything with it. The Amazon stuff wasn’t great, but that can easily be fixed.

While I do enjoy a lot of these characters on their own, I do not buy this group as team at all. None of them have any chemistry with each other, and they all feel so separated. The only interesting dynamic thus far is Jon and Eddie. Which isn’t a good statistic given how bloated this team is. Steph standing up for Yara, while in character, falls flat when they’ve had zero notable interactions over the previous six issues.

I don’t know how this team was formed or why they chose to work together. None of them really knew each other prior, and have no reason to seek the others out to form a team. It doesn’t help that they just arrived as a team in the first issue. I know it’s just because Brombal wanted to use these characters, but this doesn’t feel like a cohesive team whatsoever. You can remove 3/4 members and the dynamics wouldn’t change at all because there was nothing there to begin with.

I want to enjoy this comic, and I’ll keep reading for now since I like a lot of characters as individuals. However, this book is a major let down and I don’t see it making it past the issue 50 mark. I like Brombal as a writer, but I think team booms just aren’t his thing. Hopefully this book gets better.

11

u/UnknownEntity347 Rorschach Sep 16 '26

Well u/Every-External-2180 pretty much said most of what I wanted to say lmao.

There's more of a plot but still this book feels unfocused and disjointed. There's a lot going on and none of it is particularly interesting or developed. Any potentially interesting ideas get no focus and every character in the book is very flat and one-note, even long-established heroes like Nightwing or Cyborg. This team dynamic doesn't have much behind it besides some quips and Nightwing being annoyed at people not following orders. There's just not a lot of fleshed out character work or indvidual characters getting much time to connect beyond the surface level or anything to really make me buy this lineup. And if I don't care about the characters, I don't have much reason to care about the plot.

This is all especially bad when Higgins just did a better job with all those exact things, with a team with even fewer established characters, in one issue.

9

u/gsnake007 Sep 16 '26

Cast is way too bloated and the writing is off. Steph
Repeatedly calling static sparky fingers was pissing me off. Call him by his name specially since some of us have been waiting for him to show back up in a comic

13

u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! Sep 16 '26

The team really is a mess it seems. And Yara being uncharacteristically passive and doubtful. Not sure I like that. And Nightwing keeps shutting down Stephanie too.

I know Titans suppose to be 'young characters grouping and learning together' thing but come on now, they are not 'rookies'. You don't have to write them like it just because it is a titans book. You have Jason's team for that with actual kids. The only 'real' rookie here should be Eva.

And man, they really make almost every Amazon unlikeable these days, no matter the tribe.

13

u/TrueBlueV Sep 16 '26

The stuff with Dick and Steph is at least in character for them both (even if it feels a little out of nowhere), but wow does Brombal's writing of the Amazons leave a lot to be desired.

2

u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! Sep 16 '26

Sadly, that seems to be the trend in other books too. Like in Tom King's Wonder Woman.

Feels like they are making them act more and more like the New 52 version of them.

3

u/CrispyGold Sep 17 '26

Ehhhhh thats kind of a loaded comparison.

The Amazons here and in that book are territorial and fairly isolationist which are not new traits. They've always disliked outsiders but nothing they've done here is particularly beyond the pale like the New 52 Amazons actively going out and hurting people.

14

u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest Sep 16 '26

I agree with this, and Kyle Higgins’ Teen Titans run (even though it’s on its first issue) shows that it’s better at their characterization than this run.

9

u/MSCrusader Sep 16 '26

The Green Team as the probably villains they always should have been is really funny. The concept of "teen trillionaires" being superheroes was always an oxymoron, and I like seeing it being addressed.

9

u/Mr_Wh0ever Sep 16 '26

It's another set up issue, but I do appreciate the added lore to Yara's mythology. Plus I'm pleasantly suprised they're touching on the Eva mystery this early.

3

u/Timeless_Ranitomeya Doom Patrol Sep 16 '26

Seems like the plot is finally picking up, nice. Hope it doesn't slow down from here. Character dynamics still fall flat, though, so that's another thing I'm hoping Brombal can focus on for the next issues, since we're already 7 issues into this run and the team feels just... there. Like in the previous issue, the two artists' styles blend in pretty well, so it isn't jarring when the book switches between them. It was sick to see the Minhocão, but I'm still cautious about the "Yaguara" spirit part, since it appears to be made up for the series and Yara's stories don't have a good record when it comes to making up cultural aspects.

Does anyone else feel like the part where the Esquecidas question Yara's loyalties (because she was raised and lives in the United States, "While we labor and burn, this Wonder Girl works on her suntan!" and all) could be setup for her leaving the Titans to stay with and help the Esquecidas? Others have already brought up how bloated this team is (with currently 9 members) for the book's decompressed storytelling, so this sort of conflict, with this arc's subject matter, could be an easy way to reduce the cast. But I remember Brombal saying he wanted a Jon/Steph/Yara Trinity in the book, so maybe I'm just reading into it.

5

u/ScriedRaven Sep 16 '26

Oh wow, the old friend is upset that Yara left and feels like they can handle it on their own when they clearly can't. It's so cliche

Steph, do not call the rich guy a crybaby when he's stood up for himself perfectly well. I'd also advise against calling someone a nepo-baby, glass houses and all that... Yes he's clearly evil, just use better insults

5

u/Night-Caelum Sep 16 '26 edited Sep 17 '26

So this is where the plot seems to be picking up. Overall I didn't mind it. I was really worried about how Yara and her culture would be done but given Brombal did research and had a consultant I didn't find anything jarring with their portrayal nor stereotypical so,so far so good (though at times people do feel too red but that's the artist).

"edit" looking on it it seems it didn't as the portrayal of Yara's tribe seem to veer into the wise advanced indigenous people trope so hmmm......

Virgil continues to struggle with his powers which he is hiding from the team but is shown to still eager to be a Titan and awed by the experience (it also seems he might be wanting to run from his experience with Dakota which is something he'll have to confront I imagine). His doubts and insecurities over the Dakota incident and the path forward he wants seem to be his main struggle and it seems to juxtapose with Yara's struggles and doubts about her place with her tribe, so I suspect these two are the leads.

The techbro guy is clearly sus and I suspect he's the one behind the attacks and it appears he has ties to Eva. Dick and Stephanie still seem to be butting heads on the leadership approach and I dunno the series is acting like Stephanie and Yara are close friends when it hasn't really been built up so it felt forced (her calling Static sparky fingers might feel too much tbh and as a white girl can you really tell Indigenous people how to accept their people? And the line about blonde and blue eyes bringing torture after promising treasures is 100 percent accurate) Didn't really like her here tbh.

Overall seems promising but I see the complaints about it having too many characters and some dynamics are lacking.

"edit" looking on it it seems it didn't as the portrayal of Yara's tribe seem to veer into the wise advanced indigenous people trope so hmmm......

Admittedly, they're Amazons, and in DC, Amazons are either full on fantasy warriors or they're sci-fi mystics, and that's what they're going with generally at the moment, including for the Esquecida, so it's not necessarily just laziness on the part of Brombal. (Someone also said that the Minhocão is an actual folklore creature, so that's something, at least.)

2

u/Timeless_Ranitomeya Doom Patrol Sep 16 '26

Do you have a source on the consultant part? I recall Brombal saying he'd be careful (with a few readers claiming, with no source, he was doing research by himself) and know the fill-in artist is Brazilian, but I can't find anything about a consultant. But yes, this does feel more respectful than Yara's previous appearances (very low bar, but still very important), with what we've seen so far, although them making up that Yaguara spirit feels somewhat odd with this level of care.

though at times people do feel too red

This seems like a recurring oversight in the Wonder Woman/Titans editorial (they've been the same team since last year, I think). In addition to happening quite a bit on this book, it also happened in the Amazons Attack mini a few years ago, plus Nubia being grey in a couple recent WW issues, and Lian being pretty yellow in the new Teen Titans. I hope they can catch and fix this for the trades.

u/Embarrassed_Piano_62 Swamp Thing Sep 17 '26

and as a white girl can you really tell Indigenous people how to accept their people?

Maybe i´m reaching here but maybe this is important for her dynamic with Dick, they´re clearly still fighting over what it means to be a leader.

u/Realistic-Steak-1680 Sep 16 '26

As a brazillian i liked this a lot, it's doing a good job of making the region interesting but not feeling devoid of protectors like Waid did in JLU. Plus Minhocão! That was a fun folkloric beastie to see being used.

u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest Sep 16 '26

I find it interesting that the Titans met the Esquecida (who kept their land a secret, even though they were united along with the Amazons of Paradise Island and the Bana-Mighdall during “Trial of the Amazons”) before they encountered something. Also, us learning a bit of Eva’s backstory (in which her name is Emily and I assume that she had no memory of her past) and Static getting used to this. Overall, this comic is okay, but the next few issues of this arc are going to be bloated with five or six storylines.

I find it interesting

Ouch, that sounds so harsh coming from you

u/WilliamDarkshades Sep 16 '26

This comic continues to be fun, honestly the most interested I've ever been in the Titans.

I just can't get into this status of Selina just working with Carmine now. Especially after they made him her father. She feels too cold to me. Especially when the whole city is under siege and people are dying. Sure she helps a couple people she comes across but compared to before, she is just too indifferent.

5

u/ogloria Sep 16 '26

man i just need to stop reading this. really really hate how Selina is portrayed here. She is FULLY participating in Falcone's criminal enterprise, and, instead of being Catwoman, is just another tool in Carmine's arsenal. She is extremely callous and indifferent towards the suffering people of Gotham. Also things don't make sense--how does she get in the building when other people are rioting at the gates? If it was some cool Catwoman way, why don't we get to see it? in fact, this whole issue was very low on Catwoman-y things. She wears the costume, yes, but at this point it feels like a get-up she puts on at Carmine's behest to carry out his errands. I also really hate that she's on hook-up apps.

I was hoping that this tie-in would show Selina participating in broader efforts to rescue Gotham from the Bad Seeds calamity. Instead, she's just doing Carmine's bidding with some heist he wants performed.

The multiple narrators and the art are also not really working for me.

I like that Selina was able to save the people of Gotham from Ivy’s plant monsters. Overall, this comic is fine.

Man, they really hate the amazons with this writing. This is not the New 52, King.

It is nice that Steve and Diana reunite again. I just cannot take the Matriarch seriously. Especially when she is just cartoonishly evil for little to no reason given. And now, she just 'took herself' as a baby for what? Gonna raise herself to be just as evil as she becomes?

4

u/KoriKosmos can we fix Tim Drake please Sep 16 '26

The ferryman has dialogue that I think implies that he's Alfred, but wasn't Alfred on a different boat?

4

u/Mr_Wh0ever Sep 16 '26

Damn, the Matriarch got there quick, lol. And she has the ring again? I guess it'll be explained in the one shot.

4

u/Greedy_Switch_6991 Sep 16 '26

...I'm still not sure why Diana was fighting that monster. I actually felt kinda bad for it.

And even though King's quality on this run has dropped precipitously since #19, I still love seeing Diana and Steve together. Hopefully they stay together when the next writer takes over.

Lizzie has grown on me, surprisingly. I think the backups from earlier issues and her miniseries last year really helped. Not a fan of seeing the Amazonians job or be so blatantly mischaracterized.

3

u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest Sep 16 '26

I like that the present-day Diana had to take care of Lizzy and the Matriarch before she had a reunion with Steve Trevor (after two years) and met the adult version of Lizzie. Also, Matriarch (who arrived from an alternate future timeline as Lizzie and Steve) defeating Diana and holding her past self. Overall, this comic is fine.
