Me as a gardening enthusiast with a fleet of tractors, I often store about 1 200 barrels of fuel oil in my garage, which is over my cellar in which I keep a few kilotons of ammonium fertilizer. These little explosions do sometimes happen when there is a fire or something.

My dad used to work with plants and said he’s probably on a list after the Oklahoma City bombing.

Well, both that type of fertilizer and fuel are why the human population can survive at levels where we are. Before the haber-bosch process we were scraping the barrel for fertilizer and there is no way we could feed as many people we do today. And that fuel is also the only realistic way we can do all of the logistics required to do that. It's why we have had those big explosions, like Texas City and Beirut. Those two things are both needed.

Yep, we hit peak guano at the turn of the 19th century.

Whatever you do don't try to break apart a giant pile of fertilizer with dynamite....

Don’t bomb the bomb?

No a German fertilizer company tried that and the results speak for themselves...

Learned MY lesson...

To be fair about Beirut all of those fertilizers should probably have at least been stored in several different containers instead of one big ass brick.

Do you want to know some ironic trivia? Fritz Haber was a Jew and invented Zyklon A which later got "updated" to make it scentless, and because this process is also used to create energetic conpounds it was improved as much as possible. My o chem Prof once said if you want to earn more money than you can spend improve the haber Bosch process by 1%. Today 1-2% of the whole energy worldwide is used for this process

Yeah, a very interesting and impactful inventor. He did lead the chemical weapons department of Germany in WW1 and the scientific community was quite split on how to accept his nobel prize after the stuff that gas did in WW1.

Lots of inventions can be sadly used to hurt each other, I wonder if humankind ever gets smart enough to use inventions only for the betterment

not sure “this is why we can cram more serfs into the limited available space on earth, destroying it in the process” is such a great argument. also not sure what this info was given in support of. i think these people were making a joke about outlandish quantities of materials for a hobbyist.

i am all for efficiency, and for meeting the needs of the human population. and all processes are going to have unfortunate events at times. nobody is perfect. but explosions aren’t needed, even if industrial scale chemicals are.

I think they were just trying to say that the government can't assume everyone with fertilizer is a terrorist because it's still an absolutely necessary material that's used in huge quantities for legitimate purposes.

Considering blasting agents are basically just fuel and fertilizer mixed together, you need to be very very careful about how you store your collection you've got going on lol.

That's the joke.

What the fuck does "about 1 200 barrels" mean?

2

u/MistSecurity 1d ago

Could be anywhere from 1150-1250 barrels.

Didnt answer the question.

How doesn't it? What additional information do you need?

0

u/Competitive_Classic9 15h ago

What are you talking about? They asked about the number, and she provided a wiki link to what a BARREL is. Semantics and pendants is not an indication of intelligence, nor a replacement for a personality, just FYI.

No, the question was "what does '1 200 barrels' mean?"

There was not a distinction between whether it was the number or the unit that was confusing. And their second reply was about the numbering syntax, as well

It's more of a pop than an explosion, let's not be dramatic here

a gardener can have a few kilotons of fertaliser as a treat. i actualy tried to get it to explode once, much more difficult than all those lists you get put onto would make you to belive. still keep away from fire

1

u/LehighAce06 23h ago

It's a lot less about the difficulty of making it happen and a lot more about what happens when it does

Must be annoying after a little explosion having to restock up on fuel barrels, ammunition fertilizer, and houses.

u/Cultural-Company282 1d ago

Eek. 1,200 barrels of fuel oil and a few kilotons of AN surely has you on some type of list. Even if you're trustworthy, there's got to be lunatics out there who would love to get their hands on that.

I deliver to farms and I’ve begun to realize why farm safety is so important

"How many lists are you on?"

"Yes"
