it used to be, but now its just something they add so you don't think you are looking at a static screen. No news program uses an actual live feed from the radar anymore as the processed images look much better.

Yep. This is the first video I could find showing what the live updating radar used to look like, back in the day: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k2G067FPHTU&t=39s
You can see the "Az" number updating in the top-right corner, showing the radar antenna's azimuth (number of degrees from north).

As someone born in 2001, the technology advancements from 1989-2029 are absolutely insane
We've seen more technological advancement in the last 40 years than parts of civilization have seen for over half a millenia. I think there is an argument 1200-1700 had less technological advancement than 1976-2026

Some radars still "sweep" the sky, but they rotate much faster than this. And obviously the update of the image should happen along the line of the sweep. So this one is obviously fake.
Edit: A bit more context: All radars can only look at one part of the sky at once. It used to be that they could only look straight forward, so you had to rotate the the radar to see the entire sky. Modern radars can do tricks to look at at angle. They can change the angle they look at many times per second, effectively looking at large part of the sky all at once (on a human timeframe). But the angle is still limited, so if you want to see the entire sky you still need to either rotate the radar, or build multiple radars and put them in a circle. The latter is very expensive, so you obviously wouldn't do that for a simple weather radar.

A different link had a minimal explosion without having to watch the video:

Pure oxygen is reasonably easy to handle safely, but it is a fucking menace.

Wow I've never seen A gun commercial in my life. But I guess probably not everyone got a ruger commercial before the video.
Edit: after reading about all the commercials you guys got it kind of seems like none of the commercials pertain to the people who got them. Which is really weird. I have exactly zero guns and all I ever had was a pellet gun well I guess I still have it but it doesn't pump up anymore. What is also weird is I was the top Marksman for three different camps I went as a child. I just always spent my money on music.

According to Gallatin Fire Department Chief Jeff Beaman, the fire sparked in a large detached garage adjacent to Cumberland Marine Works.
“As we investigated and looked into it, we found that it was more than likely just the normal things that you find in the garage, that when they’re exposed to a fire, sometimes they do go boom,” Beaman said. “So there was nothing that we’ve heard about propane tanks or natural gas lines.”

I wonder if it is totally fake now or if it is at least still accurate to NWS dish even if they now used the final full sweep image once it is processed by NWS. I am guessing the former though since that is cheaper.
Would at least be cool if it was accurate to something IRL even if it wasn't really useful anymore.

The line has always been fake - BUT at one time it did have a purpose - it indicated where the radar antenna was pointing at the moment - where the data was the freshest.
The energy reflections echoed back to the antenna would "burn" into the phosphors at that point as would linger and fade over time until the sweep swung back around.

Meteorologist here, with a specialty in radar.
What the radar is picking up is know as a roost ring. It’s a biological signal of a high concentration of either birds or bats simultaneously taking off and spreading out over an area. An explosion, especially one of the size mentioned in the video, would not create returns on radar like this. The reflectivity return is too high and the distribution is too symmetrical.
44
u/Junior_Rise_7451 1d ago
The explosion could have caused the mass move of the birds though right?

Right, so yes the explosion happened there, but the radar is not picking up the actual shockwave, it’s picking up all of the birds/etc. in the area flying basically outwards away from the shockwave explosion

Bethpage and Cottontown look to be 17 miles apart by highway.
Are you saying this flock of birds are managing to occupy an area with a diameter of ~10 miles?
→ More replies (10)15
u/LostInRetransmission 1d ago edited 1d ago
They don't need to "fill" the whole volume. Each tiny bird/bat has its own small radar return and the whole flock adds up, thus make enough return to be visible. That's why you can see murmuration on radar e.g. https://wxguys.ssec.wisc.edu/2024/09/30/weather-radars-birds/ the "blob" as mentioned by the radar specialist is shown also and explained - see image on right side with subtitle "Scientists can distinguish rainy weather as seen to the west and north in graphic from flocks of birds because they appear as circles or blobs on radar screens."
edited: I am certain the ring is not the explosion from two days ago of a garage (as some state below). That radar return is 16 km wide (distance galatin/cottonwood). A garage explosion would not make that wide a radius. Bird flying in panic from a huge noise , on the other hand, would potentially make that visible.

Pardon, I don't doubt your explanation, but why is symmetrical distribution a clue it ISNT an explosion? Arent explosions rapidly expanding energy? Wouldn't the signal thus be spherical in nature and therefore symmetrical?
We've all seen videos of explosions where the flame energy clearly isn't symmetrical like munitions impacts or crashes, but wouldn't a static catalyst's force and detectable signatures be nearly perfectly symmetrical?
This question isn't about the post, but about the nature of explosions in general.

I live near that area. Gallatin (just northeast of Nashville) had a garage catch fire and "stuff" inside of it blew up. They don't know what caused the fire, and they don't quite know what stuff blew up yet. The fire chief basically said it was "normal household stuff that would explode when exposed to a fire." Who knows if it was propane tanks, fuel cans, etc. Still investigating.
But Gallatin also had a house under construction blow up from a natural gas leak last year, so now they've basically started an annual trend of a home blowing up once a year or so.
