People desperately want to be the exception to the rule

Even if the quest to be the exception destroys their life in the process

This is why some people believe in a flat earth regardless of all evidence. It gives their life more meaning than if they accepted the truth like everyone else

It's why people willingly get into relationships with someone with a cheating background. They feel extra special knowing things might be different with them

It's why some people are so religiously devoted because "my religion/God is more true than all others which are false"

It's why rich folks have "rules for thee but not for me"

And it's also the basis of "I never thought leopards would eat MY face,’ sobs woman who voted for the Leopards Eating People's Faces Party"

The mood ring's been stuck on a murky purple all week so this hits close to home

It's not even about the obvious stuff like flat earthers, it's the quiet everyday delusions that get me. My sister keeps dating musicians who are "different this time" and every single one has blown through her savings by month three. She's 41 with a master's degree but somehow this 28 year old bassist who can't keep a plant alive is gonna be the one who changes

We're all just out here writing fanfiction about our own lives I guess

You mean the average person is not special, but average! Most people are just folk and should find meaning in their lives as a normal person! The existential dread!!

It's important to not get tangled in semantics, but I'm glad you brought this up. Because there's a subtle but big difference in being inherently special versus exception to the rule. The latter is people who, as I mentioned, will sacrifice their principles or common virtues in their desperate quest to feel special or above others. Note how every example I mentioned isn't someone feeling special with something only relating to themselves, it's at the expense of something or someone else. Idk if I've articulated the difference well enough

The nuance in menace.

Some catch the nuances they have been missing.

And some realize they were not wrong all along.

This is far more prevalent in some cultures than others. In some cultures, people don't want to stand out and standing out too much is even frowned upon.

Some of us know that our personal well-being depends on the well-being of the community. We know that we cannot thrive or enjoy life if all our neighbors are starving, sick and desperate.
