Your guy
Who is that one player that you defend to the end and believe he is better than most everyone else? For me it’s Cutler, I truly believe he coulda been great in the right system. If Mr. B(rip) woulda gave old shanny one more year I think his career woulda turned out a lot different.

I remember him converting an impossible 4th down by breaking like three tackles towards the end of that gawdawful 2014 Divisional Round loss to the Colts. He seemed like the only Bronco on the field who wanted to win that day

I’ll be honest I couldn’t stand Kyle Orton, mainly because I was so upset over loosing cutler

I’m with you 100%. Kyle Orton started 6-0 and the wheels only fell off once he got that high ankle sprain that he never fully got to recover from because Chris Simms sucked ass.

He’s the exact opposite for me.
2-8 to finish 09
3-10 in 10
1-4 in 11
6-21 after a 6-0 start in Denver. Absolutely my first “hate” player.
Didn’t help that this was coming right out of the Plummer/Cutler era…

The king of throwing the ball away as announcers talked about how it was the right move

u/redlightning2112 Newer D Helmet 5h ago
That’s how I always felt about Drew Lock. If Fangio didn’t railroad him, he could have had it. Then he balls out as a backup (good for him!) and people were surprised, but I felt like “well no shit”
14
u/IMERMAIDMANonYT Wil Lutz 4h ago
I will forever hate Vic Fangio as a coach for that reason. Everyone on earth knew what Teddy B was, Drew showed flashes and problems, but at least when he was hot it was hot. Choosing to start Teddy was the most feckless and tepid QB decision I’ve ever seen. It killed any hope I had for that season before it ever began
10
u/redlightning2112 Newer D Helmet 4h ago
Even the pettiness of wishing teddy bridgewater a happy birthday to the media publicly when it was also lock’s birthday was just so pedantic. The guy was a terrible leader
11
u/John-Sequitur 5h ago
Was about to make this exact comment. Who knows what he could've been in Denver, but whatever potential was there was completely and inexplicably sabotaged by Fangio. He even waited to activate Lock off of IR, choosing to play Brandon Allen for an extra game or two instead. Absolute coaching malpractice.

u/SlaminSammons 5h ago
Fangio was a dumbass for not going with Lock. Teddy was going to take us to ~.500 where Drew had such a higher ceiling.

u/gregor630 GOD BLESS BO NIX 2h ago
My final sentiment on Lock is that he was never gonna be a franchise QB unless he landed in a perfect spot. By the time he was drafted, we were still trying to make the most of the remnants of the Super Bowl team, which was foolish being three seasons and two HC’s removed from then. He wasn’t a “win now” QB.
All he needed was the right mental development and pro acclimation because he had an absolutely sweet arm and plenty of athleticism that could get him out of and into trouble all the same. He would have needed a situation like Josh Allen, where there was a longer term plan for the rebuild and thoughtfully developing a more raw QB over a few years instead of expecting a bunch of wins out the gate.

Classic case of a roster where someone has to get stats, but it doesn’t mean those stats carry any meaning.
The old Jerry Stackhouse 29ppg phenomenon.

u/Virtual_Werewolf_935 5h ago
Cutler sucked. He’s the anti-guy for me.
My guy was Plummer. He could have taken us back to the playoffs if Shananan’s ego didn’t get in the way and we ended up with Cutler.
7
2
u/Leading-Research758 5h ago
I was Plummer fan as well but he was a turnover machine, I’ve never gotten over that Pittsburgh Steelers afc championship game. And cutler had a consistent great offensive scheme you see what he did under shanny
2
u/Virtual_Werewolf_935 5h ago
Cutler never made the playoffs and ultimately was the reason Shanahan got fired imho.
We were 7-4 and had beaten the Steelers when he got benched. We missed the playoffs.
1
u/Leading-Research758 5h ago
He made the pro bowl his last season with us and we missed the playoffs that year because our defense was trash.
3
1
u/BingBongtheArcher19 5h ago
We had lost 2 in a row and the offense sucked bad when Plummer was benched.
3
u/Virtual_Werewolf_935 5h ago
And then we sucked worse after.
0
u/BingBongtheArcher19 4h ago
The defense sucked, the offense actually performed much better.
Under Plummer, we averaged 17.7 points per game, and failed to score 20 points 8 times in 11 games.
Under Cutler, we averaged 24.8 points per game and hit at least 20 points in every game.
3
u/Virtual_Werewolf_935 4h ago
Plummer had a 49.2 qbr that season (bad)
Cutler had a 41.9 qbr (worse)
One had just gotten us to the AFC Championship. The other guy never sniffed the playoffs for us.
But I’m sure it’s the rest of the teams fault when it was Cutler playing, right?
-1
u/BingBongtheArcher19 4h ago
QBR is a bullshit, made up ESPN stat that means nothing.
Explain the 7 point per game scoring jump?
3
u/Virtual_Werewolf_935 4h ago
Because every game became a shootout, and because Brandon Marshall (a rookie as well) was coming into his own.
Before that we were playing defensive games. Winning 13-3. Suddenly we were losing 48-20. I prefer the win.
1
u/BingBongtheArcher19 4h ago
Why did we suddenly start getting into shootouts? Did the defense just not want to play well for Cutler?

Even tho I liked Plummer a lot, I loved the switch to cutler at the time. But over time it became clear he didn’t have the mentality to be at the top. Was a perpetual whiner, took too many tight window chances that got intercepted, just never seemed to lead the team on a cultural level and I agree - got shanahan fired. He had an unbelievable arm for sure tho.
9
u/Megalodon3030 4h ago
I think Peyton Hillis is a big what if had he not gotten in McD’s dog house.
Timmy is an obvious answer.
Chad Kelly was an interesting piece if he didn’t have the IQ of a broken lawn flamingo.
Had Brandon Marshall been a career Bronco would’ve been a cool story to see.
Dumervil’s faulty fax machine deserves some hate for a fan favorite.
Clady and Champ don’t really qualify, but deserve an aside for never getting the SB ring they deserved. (Give Brian Dawkins an asterisk, though he probably should’ve gotten one in Philly)
2
u/North_Mastodon_4310 2h ago
Tell me more about Elvis’s fax machine.
3
u/ColoradoAvalugg 2h ago edited 1h ago
Going into the new league year for 2013, Dumervil was set to be paid $12 million that the Broncos were not willing to pay. Both Dumervil and the Broncos wanted him to stay in Denver and they were able to agree to a pay cut to $8 million dollars, 30 minutes before the deadline to where the $12 million dollar salary would be guaranteed.
The weird part of the story was that Dumervil’s agent, Marty Magid was in his Philly office while Dumervil was in Miami when the agreement with the broncos was made. Magid allegedly didn’t have a working fax machine in his office which led to Dumervil having to rush to a local post office to fax over the new contract to league offices before the deadline passed. He was unable to make it in time and the broncos cut Dumervil with 1 minute to spare.
Dumervil then fired his agent and there is some speculation that Magid purposely tanked the deal with a faulty fax machine so he wouldn’t have to take pay cut from the agent fees.
Edit: corrected spelling and grammar mistakes

The Ringer had a great article a few years ago about Jay Cutler. Specifically the end of his time in Denver and what went wrong in Chicago. I think you're right, if Shanahan stays, Cutler could have been special. In Denver under Shanny he was developed slowly. In Chicago he was thrown to the fire as the savior.
I also feel similarly about Trevor Siemien. No, he wasn't super talented. But if think if Kubiak stays, T-Sizzle could have been our starter for a good while
2
u/mdanelek 4h ago
Cutler and Siemian are mine as well. Both could have had solid careers with the Broncos had the chips fallen a little differently
2
u/JKMiles665 2h ago
I just got overly defensive on a guy making for of us “drafting Trevor siemien” last week. Like he was a 7th round pick who had above .500 record for us.
I also get defensive over Brock Osweiler weirdly. For what we drafted him for, he was a great pick.

Trevor Siemian. I truly think he lost something after getting walloped head-on against the Chargers.
5
u/johninbigd Broncos 4h ago
I think we could have won a lot of games with Trevor with a good o-line instead of one that was letting him get hammered relentlessly.
4
u/Leather_Network4743 5h ago
Jake Plummer was and is that guy for me. He could do no wrong, even though he did, and quite often.
5
u/kemperature 4h ago
A couple RBs - Quentin Griffin and Phillip Lindsay.
Q Tip got injured and was apparently “never the same” even though we never really gave him much of a shot after that anyway since we had Mike Anderson, Tatum Bell, AND Ron Dayne.
Lindsay…I’m still mad about how we treated him. Showed him the door too early in my opinion.

This probably isn’t controversial among broncos fans, but it definitely is among NFL fans at large: I firmly believe champ Bailey is without a doubt the greatest cornerback ever

He was pretty much universally lauded during his time on the broncos tho
2
u/shamansean Chris Harris Jr. 2h ago
Lauded yes, universally no. Didn't get paid like a top corner, and didn't get as much treatment as Champ or Talib.
I was really upset when he didn't re-sign with us, and then took less money than we offered with the chargers.

He was a hometown legend and lost my mind when he got picked up by the Broncos.

Brandon Marshall. If not for the screws loose and McDaniels--his name could and should be all over the Broncos all-time record books. He is arguably the most talented WR in Broncos history.
I loved his physical playstyle at WR so much and how he turned into a RB after the catch. So unique.

u/ConsciousReason7709 4h ago
Clinton Portis. I’m still angry that we traded him for Champ Bailey. I think he would’ve finished as a top 5 running back all-time under Shanahan. I know I’m in the minority on this one.
