Discussion How did this happen? Anthony Henday just now.

Great job on the ladder tie down however

I zoomed in on that myself. Looks like they didn’t budge.

The ladders are ok!

I was thinking more about the ripple effect of ladders flying all over the Henday when it flipped and hitting cars. I drive it daily and have nightmares following some vehicles thinking their poorly secured load is going to come through my windshield

Imbalanced trailer load and not enough tongue weight. Kinda like this. The trailer can eventually flip over if the transitioning load is extreme enough. It seems that if the truck took the offramp a bit agressively, that might've initiated the swaying and flipping.

u/WorkingAir8854 14h ago
Likely this. You need the majority your weight ahead of the trailer wheels. I learned this the hard way. Luckily nothing wrecked or rolled but when the swaying started it was almost lifting my trucks back tires off the ground.

u/CrummyPear 13h ago
I’d argue the majority of the weight should sit over the trailer axles. Tongue load should be 10-15% of trailer weight.
1
u/WorkingAir8854 13h ago
Ya I didn’t explain that enough. Of course over the axles with a lot of weight on the hitch. When I put the trailer on my truck I like to see the weight push my truck down.

Trailer probably started whipping around.
Insufficient tongue weight, a loose load inside the trailer, or wind can all cause it. Once it starts whipping it gets worse and worse until it jerks the ass end of your truck off the road. Only good way to stop it is to use your TBC to lock up the trailer brakes. If you try to brake with the vehicle brakes the weight of the trailer will shove you and jack knife and then you're extra fucked

u/redeyedrenegade420 14h ago
All of this is right, but it's the Henday. It also could be that he was cut off by some jackass who didnt shoulder check and this was the result of evasive maneuvers.

Nah thats not entirely true,
you can also slam your gas pedal to the floor and straighten it out that way.

Yes except he would be plowing into the guy that just cut him off probably.

Meh, he's clearly going to be the bigger of the two...
embrace the "Henday etiquette' and get after 'er /s

So many people that have utility trailers in alberta have no idea about tongue weight. For me that was the first thing i did after i bought a trailer was watch that exact video you linked haha. And iv never once had a speed wobble issue. Alot of the time i see these guys get the speed wobbles on the Anthony henday is when they are already going 110 and decided to quickly switch lanes to pass somone.
•
u/TalycD 10h ago
I’m extremely new to very occasional towing; what is TBC? I absolutely would start tapping my breaks if I were to ever have started to fishtail! I already knew about load distribution and lower speed limits, larger distances for stopping with the extra weight load and I am surprisingly good at lining it up to hook up(thanks yo back up camera!)

TBC is a trailer brake controller. If your trailer has electric brakes and a 7-pin connector, you'll need one of these. They apply the trailer brakes when you step on your brakes. You can adjust the strength, or by pressing an override button you can apply just the trailer brakes. These are common in RVs and large cargo trailers.
If you just rent light cargo trailers, like I did for decades for moving or dump runs, they use mechanical inertia brakes and don't need a TBC. You slow down and the trailer squeezes the brakes.

Back loaded trailer and a lack of trailer brake connection....
Add speed and stupidity

u/TopFuel1771 14h ago
A combination of not loading the trailer properly and a severe lack of wheel skill

There was about 30 mins of absolutely insane wind earlier, wouldn’t doubt that it helped in causing both of these.
•
•
u/Vuutarros 10h ago
Wind. This wind has strong enough gusts to make it super dangerous for trailers.
That's all that's needed. Anyone trying to blame anything else just doesn't know what they talking about. This wasn't reckless driving or going too fast.
Today's wind is all that's needed to tip a trailer that tall with a low pivot point like its hitch.

Unbalanced load in trailer, excessive speed causing to go into the death wobble roll.

I did this about 30 years ago the very first time I pulled a trailer by changing lanes too quickly.

Speeding, wind, swerving to miss something, taking an exit too fast, unbalanced load, inexperience. Any of these could do it. Combine more than one of the above and it becomes pretty easy.

Also it's windy af, at the time, and he's pulling a giant box on wheels. Next time it's windy af go rent a U-Haul and drive crosswind. Lemme what thats like and get back to me 😂

We had huge winds today. If that trailer is partly empty it turns into a sail.

u/BoneZX14 14h ago
Weight of the contents in the trailer is unevenly loaded or shifted. On the otherhsnd, there is always something happening on the road that makes one ask " WTF?". Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

u/lakoustic1 13h ago
Knowing other drivers on the Henday, I assume someone cut him off and he overcorrected with an improperly balanced load.
1
u/PotatoFarmerRTK 14h ago
Put all the heavy stuff on one side near the back.
Tongue weight too little is just as bad as too much.
1
u/BoneZX14 14h ago
Or simply coupler disconnected from the ball, trailer swaded with just the safety chains and tipped.

Mini trailer could have been load tail heavy, making it to fish tail and causing the truck to loose control and the trailer to tip to its side

Morons with trailers. If you are driving fast enough that anything that anyone does around you, is going to trigger this outcome. You are likely driving at least 20 kph too fast and probably more.
1
u/LickinThighs2 12h ago
So if I had to guess, I bet driver needed to apply brakes, maybe suddenly or something, going to fast, over corrected, that kinda thing, and the momentum of the trailer just carried itself, couldn't slow down or control that slow in time and it tumbled
Even then though I can't think they coulda gone too fast, because it looks like the ball stayed on hitch from here, you'd think the whole trailer woulda rolled if thats the case
But that is my first impression, trailer flipped from over correction like braking/changing direction to avoid something
edit: I guess looking at it it is off the hitch, just has the break away/chains still on lol

If you have to ask the question, you haven’t lived here long enough. Just another day on the YEG roads.

It is SO FUCKING WINDY today. Could be improperly packed, but that's my first guess
•

u/CrystalRem 10h ago
The wind. 100 km/hour. Never drive beside a rig in high wind. Higher centre of balance.

u/ResponsibilityNo1148 8h ago
After the exit where this trailer flipped on its side was a truck with its front quarter panel and wheel smashed. It appeared to me that the truck clipped the back of the trailer and caused the accident. That’s just a guess as I didn’t see it happen.

u/EducatorOld9629 8h ago
Wind gusts to 100km/h. There were wind and dust storm warnings in Sherwood park and the power was out all over the area
•
u/Weekly_Watercress505 8h ago
It started getting super windy at about 1pmish. We stayed off of the Henday and took city streets to get to our destination. It was still windy but at at least there were some buffer zones along much of our route. We would normally take the Henday to get from one end of the city to the other, but when it's windy out like it was this afternoon, I'll take the city streets.
This dude was probably driving too fast with a light trailer and it started fishtailing. Once that happens, there is very little one can do to control the trailer other than gently slowing down and driving at much slower speed in the slow lane. Far too many people treat the Henday like a race track.

Do you know how sails work? Light trailers aren't as hard to roll over as one might think with high wind, especially if it's partially in a turn already.

Incompetence probably. Every day I see at least one truck with a load that isn't secured properly, and more than once have I had the doors of a trailer open and all of its contents fly at me. I'd put money down on speed and bad lane changing being the main factor.

Used to work for a major supplier for construction material in Edmonton in shipping and receiving. The lack of safety training in most of the truck drivers I worked with was staggering. And im talking about those huge trucks that have up to 2 trailers and 16 axles. On a few occasions I had to refuse service to drivers that insisted safety standards are “just there for bad drivers” and were insisting they could safely carry 18 vertical feet of product. No Bill, I will not in my right mind do that, not because I think you’re a bad driver, but because if you get hit by an unusually large gust of wind, you may kill a family driving next to you
•
u/KingSnugglewumps 8h ago
Load looks very secure... Nothing came off the top despite it getting tossed on its side.
That said, all that siding gear on top makes for a top heavy trailer, and the wind likely got the best of it
•
u/ELLinversionista 7h ago
Wind was really strong in this area earlier today. I saw this on my way to a friends house and figured wind has something to do with it

Seriously? Is this a rage bait title?
It’s a flipped over work trailer. I see them twice a week. Considering how windy it’s been these last few days, I’m kinda surprised at how few I’ve seen.
In this case, I think Deadpool and the Thanos dude were trying to find a kid.
Or something.

Wind or a maneuver that starts the trailer fish tailing out of control.
If there is a large enough unsecured load inside the trailer it will magnify the effect.
