Connor McDavid’s 17 Points Through 6 Games Is One of the Best Starts in NHL History

Post image

After yesterday’s Frozen Frenzy game, Connor McDavid is up to 17 points through his first six games of the 2026-27 season.

He’s just the 11th player in NHL history to record 17+ points through his first six games to start a season.

• Cy Denneny (1917) (18 points) (Ottawa Senators)
• Corb Denneny (1919) (17 points) (Toronto St. Pats)
• Babe Dye (1922) (19 points) (Toronto St. Pats)
• Bobby Hull (1965) (17 points) (Chicago Black Hawks)
• Guy Lafleur (1975) (17 points) (Montreal Canadiens)
• Wayne Gretzky (1983, 1984, 1993) (18, 17, 17 points) (Edmonton Oilers, Los Angeles Kings)
• Mike Bossy (1984) (20 points) (New York Islanders)
• Brent Sutter (1984) (17 points) (New York Islanders)
• Mario Lemieux (1986, 1988, 1992, 1995) (17, 22, 19, 17 points) (Pittsburgh Penguins)
• Jack Hughes (2023) (17 points) (New Jersey Devils)
• Connor McDavid (2026) (17 points) (Edmonton Oilers)

God the start to that season was annoying. So many people talking about how Hughes is now the best player in the world, winning the Hart, etc. Then he had 57 points in 56 games to finish out the season (and obviously missed 20 games).

Brent Sutter also sticks out like a sore thumb. Moreso than Hughes IMO. Just 3 P/GP seasons and sub 830 points in 1111 games almost entirely played during the highest scoring era in history.

Mario doing it 4 times, including both 19 and 22 point performances.

Sheesh.

Didn’t the regular season start 2ish weeks early this year? Doesn’t that give an advantage to players this year?
