You probably have a 10$+ subscription to something you don’t use right now. This is how much you could help animals each month by donating that money to effective charities instead:

I’m trying to figure out where I want to donate to help animals this year, so I created a handy little table for myself to make it easy to understand what impact my donation would have if given to a selection of organizations. (Se my previous post: https://www.reddit.com/r/EffectiveAltruism/comments/1x7mqdz/what_would_you_all_say_is_the_most_effecitve_way/ ) Thought this might also be a useful / motivational sheet for some of you to see.

Darker green = The three that feel like the biggest overall impact for 10$ to me.

The list is mostly the organizations recommended by Animal Charity Evaluators. https://animalcharityevaluators.org/recommended-charities/ with some I have personally donated to in the past added in to make them comparable to me. Data for most is also from Animal Charity Evaluators, estimates for Veganuary is from their 2026 Report, estimate for Local Sanctuary is from Google.

Why would I pay people to eat Vegan?

From how I understand it - They work with institutions like schools & hospitals to offer more Vegan options and this is an estimate how many more Vegan options are eaten because of that program. You dont pay anyone directly to eat Vegan ofc.

That makes sense. Do you think the biggest barrier to veganism is access or acceptability?

Both, but it's more specific than that. Meat/dairy alternatives will not claim a major market share until they are equally affordable, tasty, and convenient. If we are being truthful, the average consumer doesn't care as much for ethical, sustainable, or health considerations.

'Affordable' means equivalently priced to the animal-based alternative.

'Tasty' means scoring equivalent on palatability as the animal-based alternative.

'Convenient' means that stores and restaurants carry a comparable variety and selection to the animal-based alternative.

Oat milk is a good example of fulfilling 2/3 of the criteria (tasty and convenient but not affordable) which is why we see good market penetration for oat milk compared to other non-animal alternative products. Most meat-based products score poorly on all 3 metrics right now (at least in the US).
