Ask El Paso I have a Question about tattoo artists

Im looking to get a tattoo soon with my buddy's tattoo artist. But my friend said that he tipped him after he paid like $700 for a tattoo. Is a tip required? Or just whatever the guy is charging is enough. The tattoo is expensive enough for hil to want a tip after lol

The tattoo artists that don't have their own space sometimes have to give a portion of the tattoo fee to the shop as part of their rent. Not unlike what salons might do with hairdressers or etc. The tip doesn't count towards the part they have to kick to the store.

As a tattoo artist why not just include what you bump up to the shop in the price of the tattoo?

bc the amount the shop charges might be a percentage. so, if the shop takes 20%, and you charge 400, the shop take would be 80. but if you bumped it to 480 to try and cover it, the shop fee would be 20% of 480, which is 96. if i tip you 80 on top of 400, im reimbursing the shop fee!

We tip our tattoo artist really well because it's always a great experience on top of his excellent work. We've tipped anywhere between 18-25%.

Got it. This would be my first time getting ink so that's why I'm asking

I totally get it! I had the same question the first time. But it was a bad experience so I didn't tip much. Now we have a new fantastic tattoo artist (in Phoenix) & the experience is completely different.

Usually tips are expected for tattoos

Whats acceptable? Like is there a percentage? Or just whatever im feeling? Depending how good the tattoo came out

I think 20% is common

Tipping is always a great idea if you like the work and the experience but it is not necessary. Experienced artists will set their rate at what they feel they should earn.

You should never feel pressured to tip, they should set their prices to what they want to charge, including rent and anything else but when I have the means to, I’ll add a tip in, but not every time, I also usually bring snacks/monsters/treats that I know my artist likes but that’s just preference
