Now imagine it being month four if the pandemic, Shikari tease something new coming out, you jump to the YouTube premiere, and seeing that

59

u/Echelon1337 4d ago

The new one Higher Ground tbh, that high pitched 'spread the love around' just comes across too on the nose and a little cringe

11

u/TedClaxton94 3d ago

The whole of the new one for me 😬

5

u/ChuckChuckChuck_ 3d ago

yeah, and plenty more on last 2-3 albums

21

u/ChuckChuckChuck_ 3d ago

I don't mind that part, I'm just really sad they've stopped writing proper bridges :( once you heard the intro, first verse and chorus, you've heard the whole song

4

u/01ympu8 3d ago

Same. If they either pitched it down or kept it the same tone it'd be better

1

u/Horror-Tadpole-9370 1d ago

For me same song but "because the silence you seek is at the peak"

1

u/Hour_Brave 7h ago

I feel like it reminds me of the powerpuff girls song when the town was all black and white and they had to make it colorful again. 🫣 i can t stop thinking about this

19

u/ChuckChuckChuck_ 3d ago

Hahhaha, reading through these comments out of context sounds like we all actually low key dislike most of what Shikari have done haha

12

u/Mr_Bagginses 3d ago

Some craaaazy ones in here

31

u/Actual_Big_Jake 4d ago

Honorable mention to the crowd chanting "of science!" On myopia. That part just sounds super corny to me but the rest of the song is top tier

42

u/MDevonL apøcoholic 4d ago

Just gonna say the Big Narstie part of supercharge so we can all get that out of the way

32

u/herefornoreason211 4d ago

I like it lol

6

u/penguin62 Just a fucking goldfish 3d ago

Fuck that, I love that verse

"How can you separate the cunt from the body, you can't, you have to separate the cunt from the mind"

3

u/manemjeff42069 3d ago

They call me Viagra boy because I'm always hard

5

u/EnvironmentalEar3098 4d ago

Most rap artists I like have a feature in the middle of the song that totally kills the song. For example Rockstar by Post Malone

-3

u/Musical-Dev 4d ago

Genuinely think you might have picked the only one with a bad section 😅 If I like a Shikari song, I usually like the entire thing

8

u/Dunnohye 3d ago

Not a song per se but I really disliked the collab with Sam Ryder for satellites in 2024

3

u/penguin62 Just a fucking goldfish 3d ago

Yeah, idk if Sam was just having an off-night, but he's all over the place in that show.

2

u/smolbabypanda 3d ago

Was my first time hearing it live since coming out as a trans man I was lowkey so mad 😂

As much as the song means to me, especially the second half, An Ode To Lost Jigsaw Pieces has the line:

“I miss them like the majority of modern mainstream music misses an original metaphor for missing someone”.

I don’t know, it feels clunky, too lengthy and too on the nose compared to Rou’s usual writing.

Another is Deadwood; i adore the beginning, but i feel it falls off in the latter half, with the repeated “I want to feel the way you feel”.

and finally would be Radiate, which is just too damn long imo. could’ve easily been cut down by one chorus at least.

3

u/squidgy7sb 3d ago

I mean they did write Radiate in the dark...

2

u/ChesterKiwi 3d ago

I've always considered being on the nose as a trademark of his lyricism. It's part of the charm for me.

7

u/dr3wtube 3d ago

The breakdown in Arguing with Thermometers has the weakest drums I’ve heard from this band. “WE’LL TAKE YOU DOWN” bongos

6

u/oktimeforplanz 3d ago

The first time I heard Arguing with Thermometers, it was when they played it live before the album release and it was INTENSE. So imagine the letdown when the album came out...

I know they play around with songs live, so I knew it wasn't going to sound exactly like the live version, but it did throw me off...

3

u/dr3wtube 3d ago

Flash Flood has a load of very odd production choices in an otherwise banger of an album.

3

u/matrixrory 2d ago

Oh man I'm not built for this thread. So many mentions of my favourite parts but I have to respect all of your opinions

3

u/adampayne 2d ago

“Wish I was back at the Dreamer’s Hotel” in Jailbreak. In fact, all of the song title references throughout AKFTWW feel incredibly clunky and shoehorned in.

13

u/neoPie 3d ago

Just a few very specific nitpics. Idk why but in Live outside it always bothered me that Rou says "I keep taming, keep training, keep taming the Horse", I'd find it better if it was "this horse" instead. Maybe bcs that would make it more clear that it's a metaphorical horse?

The "I want to see your body"-line from undercover agents

And lastly in Leap into the Lightning (which I otherwise really like) the rubbery soundeffect that comes right at the beginning and after the chorus, I don't know how its called, but it always throws me off

Oh and while we're added: The Autotune in Bloodshot.

8

u/rmhutchings96 3d ago

I love …Meltdown but cannot abide the part of System… where Rou does the “when I was little, I dressed up as a…’ section. For some reason it cringes me out even though it completely sets up the song’s wider themes

8

u/duck-shovel 3d ago

It always bothered me in The Sights, Rou says "yeah, my head's a bit stir-fried"

I get what he means, but that attempted colloquialism just doesn't land for me

38

u/Mr_Bagginses 3d ago

I absolutely love that line.

2

u/5yearoldAngie 3d ago

Satellites - when the minions come in with the laalalalala

2

u/JoPa1887 3d ago

The Part after the Fafare and the first „this kiss for the whole world“ at the beginning

2

u/EmLahLady 3d ago

Not a dislike per se but everytime I listen goldfish I hear: "you are the goldfish I am the bowl, you're swimming in circles I AM A TURTLE"

And I want so bad for it to be the line. Or the crowd to shout it instead. Its almost more suited to first picture, FIRST PICTURE x2

2

u/cocamola 2d ago

The “ I really don’t know man” in Juggernauts in that faux squeaky American accent

2

u/Maximumbeans5 2d ago

Not exactly disgust but the guitar solo in Stop the Clocks. I feel like Rory can do more than that, surely.

2

u/RaviFennec 2d ago

Supercharge when Shikari perform vs Supercharge when Big Narstie says anything

2

u/Bushwacker1404 2d ago

Gonna get absolutely crucified for this but: “tonight! We’re wide awake!’ in Mothership

I have no issue with Rou’s screams being a bit rough round the edges on a debut album, same as the songs themselves. But that one is a hard listen.

Also a few lines in the Lose Your Self album (which I fucking love btw, just some rhymes like ‘isolated/intoxicated’ make me role my eyes a bit. Same in Spaceship Earth II when there’s something about ‘pricks coming home to roost’)

2

u/ThvrstnMcSvenn 1d ago

The beginning of The Revolt of the Atoms was amazing.

I remember exactly where I was when I first heard it: I was in a park late at night fitting a bodyweight workout in and spinning The Spark for the first time.

Then the first drum fill came in and the rest of the song slowly deteriorated into fuckassery.

It is the only song in their entire discography that I dislike strongly, and it's because the intro was so promising juxtaposed to the rest of the song which was a massive letdown.

2

u/MDevonL apøcoholic 1d ago

The live version on the last spark is so much better

2

u/roochub 1d ago

Mastodon aunt Lisa

4

u/Bread-Zeppelin 3d ago

The high pitch screech at the beginning and end of Radiate. Play it through headphones and it's an ear bleeder every time.

4

u/WildAlocasia 3d ago

this is my favourite part 😭

5

u/Actual_Big_Jake 4d ago

Its ok Its ok Its ok Its ok

6

u/WildAlocasia 3d ago edited 3d ago

I actually really like this chorus, yes it's simple and repetitive but I think it makes the point of the song very well. Activists are repeatedly dismissed and told "there's nothing to worry about" regarding our concern for the fact the world is burning. The dissonance – if that's what it's called – of the 2nd and 4th "it's okay" alludes to the fact that if folk are paying attention to more than simply the words being spoken, they'd be able to see through the bullshit.

5

u/Ihsahn_ 3d ago

Yeh, I can relate Cos yeh, when I was a little boy I used to dream of growing up & maximising shareholder value

It's a twee phrase that trended online for a short period and was already out of date by the time the album came out!

0

u/biggest_mac11 3d ago

Genuinely the only definite skip of Shikaris catalogue when listening to the albums. I don't get the love for it at all

5

u/Jciesla 3d ago

I've been chastised for this opinion before, but satellites and the "online they discuss whether I exist, and in the courts they decide who I can kiss". I don't disagree with the message, but I hate the lyric and delivery.

3

u/Clom_Clompson 4d ago

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, in Waltzing off the Face of the Earth (part 1) right before the end of the song when the whole waltzing comes crashing down, there is a broken, squealing horn that comes in like 2 bars before everything else, and I hate it

3

u/bubbaodd 3d ago

Oh did i mention? Im from another dimension

2

u/EmLahLady 3d ago

SHHHHIIIIIAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN

2

u/ukmint 3d ago

Just yeyeyeyeyeyeyeyey

2

u/MYSTIK_MINX 3d ago

the intro to Rat Race 🙃

5

u/dr3wtube 3d ago

Their best ep. They really blend the chaos and catchiness into 1 on this one.

2

u/robertosnow 3d ago

The wub breakdown in pack of theives did not age well at all imo. The rest of the song is a banger but everything after “now change the world” is bad

3

u/dr3wtube 3d ago

Yeah bad transition in an otherwise great song. Listening back they really threw every part they could ever think of into every song on Flash Flood.

3

u/robertosnow 3d ago

To be fair it was great when it came out.. just didn’t age well

1

u/r0b3r71s0nf1r3 3d ago

Dead in the water... the waaaaater (background vocals)... ruins it for me

1

u/XPeepshowX 3d ago

"Why does that sound like Louis Armstrong"

1

u/smolbabypanda 3d ago

The repetition in airfield, I love the beginning love the end but always find myself skipping the middle after the first set of “ so your down on your luck your down”

1

u/XenoCraigMorph 3d ago edited 3d ago

The very end of Gap in the Fence when the guitars come in is just pure noise and always requires me to turn down my headphones.

3

u/RoadmanJM 3d ago

Best bit!

-8

u/duck-shovel 4d ago

"Yeah, yeah, we're nice guys..

UNTIL WE'RE NOT"

48

u/communistkangu 3d ago

That's the best part

1

u/Beginning_Computer56 3d ago

A kiss for a whole world x

-5

u/life-on-a-plate 3d ago

last garrison "I CANT FEEL MY LEGS"

-3

u/herefornoreason211 4d ago

Honestly, I hate the beginning of the last garrison. soon as we get to the "this is the tragedy" it becomes peak.

u/Spudgunhimself 3d ago

Down with the sickness

When they started doing dub remixes of take to the skies tracks, not a fan

-2

u/Caltron34 3d ago

“I’m the lion, you’re the witch” grow up

-4

u/Joshouken 3d ago

The repetitiveness and the roughness of the main synth on Juggernaughts

-8

u/Pleasant_Statement64 3d ago edited 3d ago

The ending of we can breathe in space

When angiosco transitions to maestoso

Key change in no sleep tonight

Edit: In case you couldn't tell, I read the thing wrong, I thought it was the typical template where the SpongeBob is for "that one part"

15

u/Mr_Bagginses 3d ago

Those are all great haha what the heck

2

u/Pleasant_Statement64 3d ago

Wait I dont care about the downvotes but im genuinely curious if Im curious ir if I somehow pissed people off

Edit: I saw the template wrong

2

u/Pleasant_Statement64 3d ago

I'd probably say the electronic breakdown in pack of thieves, I dont really care for it

Maximizing shareholder value

7

u/Clom_Clompson 4d ago

Why that part in particular? The whole song is like that

-8

u/Talpy12 4d ago

I know that's the whole point, I'm just a bit tired of the overuse of this phrase nowadays. Every joke is about "oh haha that's my life goal to maximize shareholder value" and just simply didn't expect it to hear in a shikari song

9

u/Nik778899 3d ago

Every joke?

-5

u/Benjaminthomas90 3d ago

“I’m not saying that we could do better, but given the chance we’d try”
