Wonder if this is due to the new food dye restrictions and the company just kept the old container design

Yeah I actually prefer this! Looks like real food.

...Except it still doesn't have enough dairy to be called ice cream...

...You shouldn't be putting that much sugar inside you anyway, what does it matter what it's coloured like?

u/ccfox84 5h ago

Bingo

u/wellwaffled 5h ago

It used to look like that. Less artificial coloring now.

Four years ago, Turkey Hill put out a limited edition flavor called... Mystery Flavor.

You could mail in your guess to them and if you were correct, you won free ice cream for life.

The flavor was Blueberry Pancake.

u/TerriTuesday 5h ago

Sounds more like they were trying to get people to come up with ideas for them lol

Given the complexity of flavor science and how it’s often teams of people mixing various chemicals, and trying to get as close as possible…

I’m calling BS that they had precisely nailed down Maple Blueberry Pancake and that only one person from North Carolina could guess that.

Most likely it was just the guess they liked best, with the winner acceptably palatable.

Notice it’s not allowed to be called ice cream either.

Pure trash, doesn't even have real vanilla

u/Sad_Ad_2524 6h ago

It literally says it on the container.  "Vanilla with chunks of black cherries."

u/WloveW 6h ago

Why is the Pic on the carton pink?

55

u/BadZnake 5h ago

Real answer:
People would think its chocolate chip. In food marketing you can't have two things look similar or pwople will buy the wrong nearly half of the time

13

u/OttersandSunflowers 5h ago

And then blame the grocery store they bought it from

6

u/BadZnake 5h ago

Yeah there's only so many ice cream returns a grocery store will get before they notice its the same item and they'd stop ordering that particular item.

You ever see a burger or cereal on TV?

The burger is clay and the milk in the cereal is glue.

30

u/molly302 6h ago

Even so, they don't use pink clay for the bun, do they?

Already walked away, not a hill I'm willing to die on.  Rock on you cherry ice cream warriors!!

18

u/Expert-Yam6577 5h ago

You're notifying folks that you've already walked away?

-22

u/Sad_Ad_2524 5h ago

Yes.  I am ridding myself of a ridiculous argument.  You should try it sometime.

17

u/Dry-Lingonberry-9701 5h ago

Did you do it yet?

8

u/mah131 5h ago

How is it?

-4

u/Sad_Ad_2524 5h ago

Living my best life with just puuuuuure vanilla ice cream.  No cherries.  Nom nom nom

25

u/OhGr8WhatNow 5h ago

In civilized countries, companies aren't allowed to advertise falsely on packaging

1

u/geeoharee 2h ago

People going "they changed it" as if that doesn't oblige them to change the image

1

u/FreddyNoodles 2h ago

Christ. I have lived all over the world and they do this shit EVERYWHERE. It is not US centric by any fucking measure.

In my family turkey hill ice cream was considered a punishment.

It you didn't do your chores, you can to eat the turkey hill.

That shit is nasty.

I’ve never tried this brand as it isn’t widely sold in Canada, if at all for that matter, but the dead giveaway that it’s something to avoid is the artificially flavoured vanilla in the description. You know ice cream is made as cheaply as possible when they can’t be arsed to use real vanilla when it’s supposed to be the main flavour profile.

12

u/imnotnotcrying 5h ago

Even if it was pink it still wouldn’t be cherry flavored ice cream. The picture is definitely a bit misleading, but it tells you right there that the ice cream itself is vanilla

8

u/ObscureOP 5h ago

I've seen this so many times posted on reddit I'm starting to think it's a Kroger marketing stunt

5

u/Atrinoisa 4h ago

Turkey Hill isn't a Kroger brand. I buy it at Food Lion all the time.

1

u/ObscureOP 3h ago

Oh, you are correct.

At a glance, i see that Kroger sold them in 2019

16

u/dundunndon 6h ago

THE CONTAINER SAYS VANILLA WITH CHERRY CHUNKS

23

u/OhGr8WhatNow 5h ago

THE PICTURE ON THE FRONT OF THE CARTON SHOWS PINK ICE CREAM

3

u/Frosty_Dessert_9131 5h ago

The words on the front say ARTIFICIALLY FLAVORED VANILLA. Everything about this carton of "Premium Quality" ice cream is contradictory.

2

u/dburr10085 2h ago

It never says ice cream on the box anywhere

3

u/dundunndon 5h ago

oh yeah...literacy is important. and not available to everybody. 3 people I went high school with are illiterate adults. they are people that have to buy food and rely on pictures or symbols representing allergens. they all vote too.

1

u/ninetiesqueen 3h ago

Who tf gonna read that when you got a picture of the product

2

u/IdealTruths 4h ago

Why don't they just use beet juice?

4

u/Cativa 5h ago

Because the ice cream isn't dyed a black cherry color it's no longer Black Cherry ice cream? 🤨

4

u/OkNectarine9239 3h ago

This is like the 3rd time I've seen this exact complaint about this exact ice cream this week.

Why don't you idiots read the carton before making a purchase? I don't think I've ever bought ice cream without making sure it was what I wanted.

1

u/Jackesfox 5h ago

"It literally says vanilla..."

My brother in christ THERE IS LITERALLY AN IMAGE OF A PINK ICECREAM ON THE BOX

You guys dont have PROCON and it SHOWS

-1

u/Sad_Ad_2524 6h ago

Wow, there is a powerful and aggressive group willing to die on this hill!!  You go!  Fight the cherry battle!

1

u/Kingsmen99 5h ago

I swear I saw you post this very recently

1

u/Main-Raisin4430 3h ago

Artificial flavored frozen dairy dessert.

1

u/Chunky_flower 1h ago

"Artificially flavoured vanilla with chunks of black cherries"

Should have just left this one on the shelf

-1

u/TDYDave2 6h ago

Should have read the label rather than just looking at the picture.

29

u/WloveW 6h ago

You blame the consumer for falling for false advertising?

Why should the manufacturer not be blamed for the disconnect between the product, photo, and description?

5

u/YcemeteryTreeY 6h ago

They must've forgot what country theyre in. This is US-buyer beware. In others they actually have to answer to this monstrosity

0

u/TDYDave2 5h ago edited 5h ago

Because unfortunately in some places the picture almost never matches the actual product.
Of course the manufacturer could have added some artificial food coloring to make it match the picture, but that wouldn't have made the product better.

-3

u/CongealedBeanKingdom 6h ago

It says 'artificially flavored [sic] vanilla with chunks of black cherries' right there on the carton.

-4

u/Kind_Advisor_35 5h ago

If the picture had been white ice cream with chunks of cherry, there would probably be complaints like "I thought this would be chocolate chip!" from people who didn't read. Always read.

-1

u/aminervia 5h ago

People who love to be contrary get off on blaming customers for trusting the picture on the label without reading the fine print... You shouldn't have to read the fine print on every tiny thing you do, the advertising should match the actual product

2

u/PigeonLily 3h ago

It’s a picture of some pink ice cream with generic looking dark flecks in it. Do you know how many other flavours there are that are pink? If you’re bypassing the label/description and just going by the image, how do you know you’re not buying strawberry, or raspberry chocolate, or a slew of other flavours?

I’m blown away by all these comments in here saying that reading the description shouldn’t be needed when there’s a picture. Maybe I’m an anomaly, but I’m not buying anything unless I’ve read the label and checked the best before date. I like to know exactly what I’m planning to consume and/or feed others.

I’d also be happier opening this ice cream to find it wasn’t full of food colouring. Because knowing what we do now, who wants their food tainted with red dye #3 or #40??

1

u/Kaimaxe 5h ago

You should ALWAYS read the packaging on everything you buy. It's literally common sense. I remember a story not that long ago of parents trying to sue Chips A'hoy because their daughter with a nut allergy didn't look at the packaging while at a friend's house and had a reaction.

Always, always, ALWAYS READ THE THE PACKAGING

2

u/aminervia 5h ago

Nonsense. When I buy junk food I assume its junk inside and don't expect anything else.

Your example doesn't apply to me, I don't have food allergies

1

u/Kaimaxe 5h ago

If you go around just grabbing any packaging that looks remotely like what you want, you can't be pissed off when it's not the thing you wanted...

Regardless if you have allergies or not. Somebody in your life might one day.

2

u/aminervia 5h ago

...If I was buying food for someone with a food allergy then I would check to make sure that food was safe...

If ice cream is pink on the label it should be pink inside. If the food isn't a pink flavor like cherry, they shouldn't advertise it as pink

u/YcemeteryTreeY 6h ago edited 5h ago

Marketing dept hears: we should add more colored carcinogenic flavoring to trick 'em. Happy Halloween!

-1

u/ohaimark22 5h ago

Get Halo. It's small, but it seriously is my midnight heaven

1

u/imnotnotcrying 5h ago

Maybe it’s gotten better over the years but I tried Halo once years ago and the texture was so bad. It was like airy and dry and almost gritty 😬

1

u/SignificantRoses 5h ago

eww i had it recently and it was like this. big yuck

-2

u/pgn674 5h ago

I saw that New England post, too, and had just put it on my shopping list. My grocery store has this brand, and now I know not to get their black cherry ice cream. Thanks!

-5

u/Shantotto11 5h ago

The Trump Administration is even whitewashing the black cherry flavor!… /s
