I bought one a few years ago for $20 from a GameStop closing sale. It’s neat.

u/DFogz Mar 08 '26

Same! Got a plasma pistol too!

92

u/radicalelation Mar 08 '26

I got the rifle, pistol, and power fist.

All three, and so much more, were stolen during a break in of my home, and while I didn't recover the rifle, I still have the first, and I gave the pistol, and some pizza and GameStop gift cards, to the two neighborhood kid siblings that helped me track down one of the local junkie thieves cars that had some of our stuff.

Trailer park living... Glad I'm out of there... Those poor kids aren't though.

12

u/Smufin_Awesome Mar 08 '26

Wait, these things are legit?

14

u/radicalelation Mar 08 '26

Yeah, they were getting cleared out of GameStop years back. Mine were actually like $10 or less, and in the same order I had grabbed a talking Power Rangers Saba Saber, which I do still have after pulling out the thief's car. The cool box it had was gone though.

u/TWW34 Mar 09 '26

I miss the boat on that by about a day and I'm still pissed about it

"Uh, ma'am your kid is pulling candy off of the shelf and opening it"

*woman pulls unwrapped chocolate out of her kid's mouth and then proceeds to put it back onto the shelf like this isn't her responsibility

310

u/Keianh Mar 08 '26

Largely unrelated but the one thing I hated as a cashier was parents trying to give me the apple their toddler slobbered all over when snacking on it so they could pay for it; no thanks, we'll just call that one a sample.

Also, if your kid is that hungry, just buy the apple or whatever it is now and go back to shopping.

99

u/AngryCrustation Mar 08 '26

Where I worked parents would just decide to turn a blind eye to their children when they were standing in line, as their kid isn't crying if they have candy in their mouth, and then when they got up to the register would pull a whole 'oh no I didnt notice, its not my fault so I guess I will just put it back'

Tbh it wasn't as common as I'm making it out to be, but it did happen regularly enough that every couple of days you would find a bunch of chocolate smeared across the candy shelf

21

u/thatoneguydudejim Mar 08 '26

Oh good!! A new thing for me to hate people for

9

u/analogpursuits Mar 08 '26

And here I thought we had a long enough list amassed for all the other stuff lately.

27

u/Karddet Mar 08 '26

I think I had that happen one time while I had my kids at the store, I stuck the sticker on my finger so that I could scan it that way and not make the cashier try to play with those sticky ball of slime

2

u/FoRealDoh Vault 101 Mar 09 '26

If a shit cashier was having shit day they might scan that sticker and put a gallon of milk on the scale lol

12

u/MysteriouslyAlone Mar 08 '26

I always took an extra to be scanned or weighed. No one wants to touch something a child has slobbered on.

5

u/Momma22girlz Mar 08 '26

I have seen moms give their kids two or three bananas while shopping. Then hand the peel to the cashier and expect them to weight it. I have kids, I never let my kids eat food in the store. Pay for it then eat it.

9

u/Angus_McFifeXIII Mar 08 '26

In the Netherlands most supermarkets have a basket with fruit for children. They can take one during shopping, free of charge.

5

u/Dunderklumpen42 Mar 08 '26

Very common here in Sweden as well

Our local Kroger has a shelf for kids with bananas, apples and cuties in the produce area for them to snack on

4

u/SeattleSteve62 Mar 08 '26

The coop grocery store I normally shop at has a policy that kids get 1 free fruit or veggie to snack on.

7

u/lelescope Mar 08 '26

i worked in the service industry. I fucking hated it when I was extremely busy, and parents wanted to use me as a learning opportunity for their dumb kids.

"Hand them the card and say thanks honey." blank stare  "Hand them the card... HAND THEM THE CARD HONEY."

lady, shit is on fire and I have 10 other tables waiting on me. 😑

2

u/VannguardAnon Mar 08 '26

In Denmark, most super markets have a bowl of free fruit for children shopping with parents. Or a free bun, if there is a bakery attached to the supermarket.

13

u/lisaizme2 Mar 08 '26

Our grocery used to give kids cookies. Corporate put a stop to that.

2

u/MandolinMagi Mar 08 '26

In the US here, when I was young I remember a grocery store chain giving kids free cookies. Think it was Big Y?

2

u/misterstevenson Mar 08 '26

The Kroger where I grew up (central Ohio) would give free cookies to kids in the bakery section. I probably haven't thought of that in twenty years!

as someone who works overnight shift for 7-Eleven I feel this on levels I'm not comfortable admitting in public.

3

u/Altruistic_Win_2861 Mar 08 '26

once you've cleaned literal human faeces off the CEILING of a convenience store bathroom for the third time you learn to put an out of order sign on the door during night shift (and most of that was taxi drivers). "Yeah I called the plumber to get it fixed but he won't get here till 8am, sorry for any inconvenience".

2

u/Weak_Midnight_6286 Mar 09 '26

Corporate has recently put a stop to keeping the restroom closed at night. Oh, and to having a second person in the store at all times. Six 7-eleven employees have been killed working night shift in this state in the last year alone. That's four more than any other place a person can find employment in Oklahoma.....dafuq, 7-eleven? Chipotle FIRED me for violating security policy by being the only person who didn't quit and staying in the building till my job was done, 7eleven just be all like "your sacrifice is unnoticed, no matter how many of your brethren fall to the evils of night shift."

4

u/TheBleachDoctor Mar 09 '26

I rescued a Genshin Impact Raiden spear cosplay prop from a local thrift before some kids could decide it was a NERF toy and obliterate it.

I was shocked at how much it's actually worth, since I got it for chump change.

2

u/rob_cornelius Mar 08 '26

My great aunt would grab a bunch of grapes and eat them as she walked around the supermarket. She was in her 90s. If anyone said anything she would just laugh.

2

u/lisaizme2 Mar 08 '26

I saw a local attorney steal blueberries out of a carton , then put it back for others to buy. Always rinse your fruit folks.

2

Edit: when said attorney ran for county prosecutor, they did not receive my vote.

65

u/squishee666 Gary? Mar 08 '26

Now they don’t put the good stuff out, and instead put it online. This leads to scalpers now looking for resellables there and bidding on things til they are at eBay prices. I’ve also watched items for days with no bids only to be counter-bid within 15 min, again pushing the price up to what can be found elsewhere online. Either bots, scalpers, or goodwills own people are doing this and it has gotten to the point where I don’t want to visit the store since it’s just the crap and I can’t use the site since it will appear to drive its own price up.

16

u/Dry-Season-522 Mar 08 '26

It's like onlien poker where the other 5 players are actually bots that share their screens so they can predict what you have.

7

u/MistSecurity Mar 08 '26

I can assure you that Goodwill doesn't bid up its own items.

The logic of it makes no sense. They bid up the items to unreasonable levels just to what? Have them get relisted at a lower price just to do it again? There's very little incentive for them to bid their own items up.

While Goodwill doesn't bid up their own items, they do not do nearly enough to stop others from dropping fake bids.

The strategy I've seen, and heard about, is that resellers will monitor items, and watch them until they're about to close. If it's something they really want, and the price isn't what they want to pay, they just bid it up to beyond where it makes sense. They 'win' the auction. Then they simply do not pay. The item gets relisted lower a few days after the non-payment, at which point the reseller can hope that it has less interest the next time around.

Goodwill will ban you for doing this eventually, but there's literally nothing stopping the people who do this from making a new account. Goodwill doesn't ban based on address, credit card, etc. So it's trivial to make a new account when one ends up getting banned for doing this.

3

u/Yodoggy9 Courier 4 Mar 08 '26

As an occasional eBay seller, this shit is unbelievably annoying and eBay does very little to counter it. I’ll even have accounts with similar names win a bid, ask me to cancel because “oops item wouldn’t get here on time/I actually can’t afford it” and then re-bid when it gets put up again despite me blocking them after.

The only solution I’ve seen that kind of works are requiring bid winners to set up an auto-pay an hour after winning a bid. They can obliviously still cancel/just delete their account, but if they forget that they bid I get paid after an hour and can refuse to cancel. But even then: not a great solution.

u/MisfitPotatoReborn Mar 08 '26

I mean good for them. People actually looking to buy specialty/expensive stuff can get what they want more easily instead of taking a crapshoot at a second hand store, and Goodwill makes more money.

26

u/Grabmbythetrump Mar 08 '26

Meanwhile, physical goodwill stores are all trash now. Legitimately everything good is taken and resold on the bidding system. Fur coats, designer clothes, Pokémon cards, baseballs, fancy hats, button collections, stamps, sunglasses, luggage, books, records, cds. They don't even carry records at all at my store: cashier said they sell them all online now. No more goodwill vinyls, I won't pay 23 bucks plus shipping for a used, uncleaned Michael Jackson vinyl that would have been 2 dollars in store.

I don't donate to goodwill for my purchases to be put in an eBay bidding war for rich people. I donate so that poor people can have nice things and my stuff isn't wasted. Now, poor people can't have nice things. Only people with money, way too much for someone's used goods, can own anything worthwhile.

Half the customers are depop resellers to begin with, so all the half decent stuff is depopped for 3x goodwill prices + shipping. The good stuff was already taken to be ebayed by goodwill themselves.

Not to mention they sell designer shit like it's authenticated. Nobody wants to spend 500 bucks on a (probably) fake coach bag bro.

13

u/squishee666 Gary? Mar 08 '26

Exactly this, I looked for a used psp go. Not a GameStop repriced used psp go, not a eBay +$200 scalper fee +shipping used psp go, but a beat up in a drawer forgotten about and donated by your mom psp go. And I found one for 15$ on shop goodwill. And within two days of bidding the scratched PoS no one would touch or want ten years ago was $250. Fuck that, with both hands. Everything anyone can get any fun out ofis driven to max price because the people buying it are going to just sell it for more on another platform. It’s lame.

4

u/FeebleUndead Mar 08 '26

I MIGHT have an old one lying around somewhere. If you want I can look tomorrow. Can't remember if it was donated to Goodwill along time ago or not (joke/pun not intended).

2

u/TheBadGuyBelow Mar 08 '26

It's called shill bidding. There is a reason most Goodwills do not use eBay, and that's because they would be banned pretty quickly.

3

u/MistSecurity Mar 08 '26

They don't use eBay because they have their own eBay where they don't need to pay a cut of every sale they make, and can charge extra for packing and shipping.

For a company as varied and large as Goodwill, it makes a lot of sense to have their own platform.

What's their incentive to shill bid? If no one buys it they relist it at a lower price. Most Goodwill already have more than they can handle, at a certain point the space is more valuable than getting an extra $10 on an item sometimes.

And people without much money can’t afford what they need and want.

1

u/MisfitPotatoReborn Mar 08 '26

Have the state give them money then. Welfare to the poor via Goodwill inventory mismanagement is a dumb way to run the economy.

That plasma rifle goes to the enthusiast, not the random Goodwill shopper who finds a "gem" for $12

In Houston, Goodwill employees hide things in the back or buy them early all the damn time and there’s rarely anything good anymore because of it.

Good on you for keeping to the rules, I honestly would’ve broken them for this though.

311

u/RainbowPickle2009 Mar 08 '26

I went to my local goodwill in Katy and there was…nothing. I remember being able to thrift and find hidden gems but not anymore.

148

u/nihility101 Mar 08 '26

All because of resellers, people who don’t need a cheaper item, but instead are flipping it for profit.

38

u/jschne21 Mar 08 '26

I mean, that is Goodwill's entire business model? Scalpers just do it a second time. Or third if you count the original she when new.

42

u/nihility101 Mar 08 '26

Not exactly, originally anyway. That part was meant as a way to get goods to lower income folks.

But now, as goodwill saw that those items weren’t going to the intended market anyway, they hold back “the good stuff” and sell it online and funnel that money into their main goals of helping people get jobs.

16

u/Ok_Reception_8729 Mar 08 '26

Goodwill never gave a fuck about poor people that’s a common misconception

They also have a track record of exploiting disabled people for 10-30 cents an hour of pay.

8

u/jschne21 Mar 08 '26

Yeah, if you look at their mission statement, it's not "give poor people the opportunity to get decent good cheap," it's giving people who can't usually get jobs a job. In other words, they pay people with disabilities or other challenges less than minimum wage to clean donated goods and sell for a profit. Said profit gets directly injected into the lifeblood of their executives.

3

u/Ok_Reception_8729 Mar 08 '26

Yeah people confuse them with food banks for some reason

u/OhNoDontBanMeLol Mar 08 '26

I used to live in Katy and you’d think with how well established the area is there’d be some nicer stuff, not the case unfortunately. Even the ones in The Heights and Woodlands are being picked clean by employees alot of the time.

I used to resell stuff from thrifts to help with debt and bills and I’d spend hours hitting multiple GWs just to come home with 3-4 pieces to sell and 1 for the collection or my closet. The smaller thrifts are alot better. I do have a badass vintage collection now though so years well spent I guess!

Lots of Goodwills are just shipping anything of value to their e-commerce hubs https://shopgoodwill.com/ so you’ll never find anything good anymore in stores since they just post it online and let the buyers decide the value

11

14

As a retail worker, putting stuff on hold for yourself is one of fhe very few perks of the job anymore. Discount at my store is not that great. My friend af Levi's has a sweet discount though.

I could see how at goodwill it would happen on a larger scale just because of the pricepoint of items, but anywhere I've ever worked has always allowed employee holds.

2

u/Jindujun Mar 08 '26

Where I live it's either that or someone looking up auctions on the internet and then putting absurd prices on the wares that is nowhere near what they're worth since they do not understand the concept of "listing price" vs. "price for items that actually sold".

What happens at goodwill type stores when something "good" gets donated. I doubt it will ever reach the sales floor so who gets dibs?

6

u/Musical_Trashbin The Institute Mar 08 '26

i can actually answer this, as i used to work there: it goes to e-commerce, who takes it & lists it on the website! A lot of locations have certain price margins + brand names they'll give e-comm, and sometimes people will put shit out anyway .

if the thing is "good but broken / stained / etc" it usually ends up at one of the bargain barn stores; normally it's stuff like clothes and misc stuff the main stores aren't allowed to put out on the floor, but occasionally you'll see some busted electronics that weren't worth handing to e-comm

speaking of electronics, most stores have to send phones and stuff to e-commerce, and most times ecomm (and the actual location the donation is sent to) won't wipe the devices so it's better to try to wipe it yourself, or take it up to a best buy / similar store and let them scrap it.

6

u/Big_Librarian_6306 Mar 08 '26

I did community service at a salvation army for a couple weeks. I worked donations and a lady in a brand new land rover dropped off a box of Armani and Hugo Boss suites. She screamed and said " they would fit you perfectly!" Unfortunately we weren't allowed to take donations and the lady was super upset when she heard the supervisor say this. Long story short the lady met me around the corner and I got 4 suits for my 2 weeks of community service.

Worked at a goodwill myself, it was so annoying that they never let us buy stuff before sending them out, so many cool things(that were too big to put in my pocket)

2

u/biophazer242 Mar 08 '26

I still have one of these as well as the plasma pistol and power fist up on my shelf. Got these from gamestop when they were doing clearance on all the fallout 4 merchandise. Pretty cool actually. It comes in parts and you put it together with little fake plastic bolts. Great attention to detail.

2

u/TobuscusMarkipliedx2 Mar 08 '26

Dude Naiwal is quitting skits.. damn

2

u/CyberViking949 Mar 08 '26

I found one of these at a gamestop years ago for $20.

No regrets. Sits right next to my mini-nuke, and pipboy

2

u/mr_caligula Mar 08 '26

Looks like it’s made by Dyson.

2

u/Misterpartytime Mar 08 '26

That’s so badass. Any chance you can get someone to buy it for you? I’ll send money lol

2

u/PokieState92 Mar 08 '26

Damn, a perfectly good phased plasma rifle in the 40 watt range

2

u/Dreaming_of_Rlyeh Mar 08 '26

No glowing green bits. Must be out of juice.

2

u/Hybrid-moments88 Mar 08 '26

Is it in the 40 watt range?

2

u/PurinaHall0fFame Mar 08 '26

That's way better than the box of dildos we got when I was working there.

2

u/JackslegionTW- Brotherhood Mar 08 '26

Holy gem 💎

2

u/AdOdd5121 Mar 08 '26

Did he by any chance look like an older gentleman in robes and be muttering something about a casino?

2

u/jepordy3 Mar 08 '26

Those are nice, I remember them being some of the first 'cosplay grade' props, I got one for about $140 because someone turned it in to Gamestop. There's a button on the side that makes the plasma batteries light up.

2

u/Jaym97 Mar 08 '26

I found the super sledge for $5 bucks in the toy section of the thrift store next to my sister's workplace 2 weeks ago. It has a slight bend on the handle, like the previous owner tried to smash something for real and bent it. I don't know much about plastic moulding so I'm just going to take a heat gun to it and bend it back when I have time.

2

u/jsmoke814 Mar 08 '26

i’ll send you my life savings for it. 2,000 caps

2

u/VergeofAtlanticism Mar 08 '26

lmao nah i’m putting that thing on the floor, quitting, and buying it and taking it home

I stopped donating things to goodwill a long time ago. Back in the day, not sure if they still have these, they had big donation bins in the parking lot so you could drop off donations when they weren't open. One night, about maybe 8 or 9 I took a bunch of clothes to donate after my friends mom died. It was a lot. Nothing super crazy but nice clothes, and were probably kind of expensive when she bought them new. It took me a few minutes to unload everything and put them in the bins. As I was driving away 2 people got out of a car at the other end of the parking lot. Walked right up to the bin and unlocked it, so they were clearly employees. I watched them go through the clothes and pull out Individual pieces and put them in their car. I was so pissed and I thought about doing or saying something but I knew I couldn't really do much but yell at them and potentially start a fight which didn't seem worth it over clothes. But I never donated to another goodwill and all the rest of the stuff my friends family donated went to the salvation army and to a local church.

I highschool I had a teacher with last name of Fuchlich. So I would always say, WTFuchlich.

... What the Fuchlich is that?

2

u/ShotAd1771 Mar 08 '26

Not homemade. They give these away at various gaming conventions. I've even seen a Junk Jet and a Big Boy.

My mother volunteers at a donation place and they once got a pipboy and had no clue what is was until she showed me the picture.

2

u/Baman2113 Mar 08 '26

Damn, and I thought the fallout 4 guidebook that came in to my work the other day was cool, this beats that by a mile.

2

u/mmbaker910reddittcom Mar 09 '26

When my daughter was small enough to sit in the cart, I always fed her before we left home. That way, I wouldn't feel it was somehow the market's responsibility to feed my hungry kid.

2

u/Ailyx Mar 08 '26

I hope the husband knows it's there

1

u/Ocolof Mar 08 '26

Boy ain't no way! 😨

1

u/HybridP365 Mar 08 '26

Yeah, this would be worth finding a new job over. I'd have put a $5 sticker on it, quit on the spot, and then bought it and walked out.

1

I would lose my job for stealing that.

1

u/Harpua111 Mar 08 '26

Some poor kids mother donated it lol

1

u/Harpua111 Mar 08 '26

Was this recent

1

u/KineticKurt Mar 08 '26

What is the name of this weapon and which Fallout it came from? I'm curious cuz I don't use Energy Weapons that often, occasionally uses the Laser Rifle btw

2

u/GuardsmanJim Mar 08 '26

It’s the plasma rifle, specifically the design used in Fallout 4/76. It exists in the older games but with a slightly different design

Very cool! What would this go for?

1

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '26

You took it before it even seen the front of the store.

1

u/Scurrin Mar 08 '26

It must have rolled bad legendaries.

1

u/No-Market425 Mar 08 '26

You probably don't have enough energy points to use it anyway.

1

u/Aggravating-Gap-6381 Mar 08 '26

What are you a valuable dweller? That's good fortune my freind!

1

u/Dear-Smile Mar 08 '26

Fuck Goodwill. I worked at one for almost a year. You get paid minimum wage and you don't even get the benefit of getting first dibs on new items. It had to be on the sales floor for over 24 hours before an employee is allowed to purchase it.

All the stuff that doesn't sell at the store gets shipped to a wharehouse where people literally fight over the scraps dumped in bins and then the rest get sold in bulk to developing nations. Not even donated.

1

u/RadsAndInk Mar 08 '26

I live just outside Chicago and you’d think I’d find cooler stuff thrifting and I never do. 🥲 I’d lose my mind if I found something fallout related. 🤣

1

u/FaceOfTheMtDan Vault 101 Mar 08 '26

I got mine while helping my neighbour move out and get away from her ex. She saw me eying it and handed it over.

1

u/monsterlynn Mar 08 '26

OMG, OP, have a friend do a straw purchase for you!

1

u/null_input Mar 08 '26

What is it

1

u/hey_yo_mr_white Mar 08 '26

"Someone's wife" donated it.

1

u/AlexiosPPPP87 Mar 08 '26

Wow do you work near the season 3 set?!?!,

1

u/MtnMaiden Mar 08 '26

Brah....it's a gun, illegal sale, toss it in the trash.

then come later at night.

1

u/AmberRosin Mar 08 '26

GameStop was practically giving these away years ago

1

u/SkinnyNecro Mar 08 '26

OMG. That's a beauty

1

u/Template_93 Mar 08 '26

That’s crazy to just donate that. I still have mine when I pre-ordered it, along with a good chunk of the other replicas that came out the same time this did.
