Picture Which of these would you most like to play?
1.3k
u/Pale-Candidate8860 Mar 10 '26
Fallout San Francisco would just be a fully developed civilization. NCR. The outskirts would be probably the Silicon Valley whereas SF and Oakland would be extremely urbanized.
I would love to play a fully developed real city in Fallout instead of a “city” with 30-40 NPCs.

u/Dreaming_of_Rlyeh Mar 10 '26
I've never played FO2, but I have heard that SF was in pretty good shape.

u/DarkSoldier84 Commie ghost who doesn't know he's dead Mar 10 '26
SF is under the control of the Shi, whose mastery of technology exceeds even the Brotherhood of Steel. The Enclave would have reduced it to a crater if 1) Van Buren had gone into production and/or 2) Bethesda not had Obsidian remove a reference to its annihilation from FNV.
119
u/Feralp Mar 10 '26
Someone in 2010 thought: "Wow, so kind of Bethesda to stand up to preserve an important city of the classic games and not let it be leveled by a nuke!"
61
u/Cranyx Mar 10 '26
At the time Bethesda said they might have future plans for the city. Avellone wanted to blow it up because he hated the city and the factions in it (I at least agree that they were definitely underdeveloped and the Hubologists thing was not very funny).

u/Deluxe_24_ Mar 11 '26
I'd rather San Fran be not nuked as it gives potential for a future game to be set in an actual developed city.
Yeah the series is focused on the apocalypse, but it's a post-post apocalypse. I wanna see how a real city functions in a world as fucking insane as Fallout's is.

Well, he did grow up in SF, just likely under Shi control. IIRC, the Shi have an agreement with the NCR and do trade with them, but they are independent. We could have NCR in the east and south side of the bay though.

Seattle's geography is perfect for an RPG like Fallout. Pike Place is already cental and basically on the water as the main town, 5/6 military installations and shipyards around the area. The Sound to divide the early and mid game with a long route south across the Narrows Bridge to Kitsap Penninsula for 1st playthrough with a secret boat route for repeat playthroughs. Mt. Rainer as final area with an enclave.
Just make sure Mercer Island is full of mutants

Seattle. Northwest native so I have a soft spot for it. That being said I fucking hate Mirelurks. East Bay SF could be cool and then dropping down into the water. Same for Portland if you had a bit more of 84 E in the game. Fallout 4 and NV did a good job of grabbing various local areas but making it all feel natural or together.
Salt Lake has the mountains. I just see the Last of Us episode when they’re walking on I-15 to find the fireflies. Good question!

You could have it like FNV where you need to go around the bay to get from the north to SF.

Absolutely!
You could start in lawless Oakland. Make your way to the technologically advanced San Jose area. Finally on to cosmopolitan San Francisco

u/thesplendor Mar 10 '26
No I would have you start in the Marin Headlands army base and walk out to see a beautiful Golden Gate in the distance. As you get closer you realize how worn down and broken it is so you have to gather equipment to be able to head through lawless Oakland which is the first big skill check
→ More replies (2)7
u/geek_of_nature Mar 10 '26
Yeah its a great way to direct the player where they need to go at the very beginning, but could also offer two different beginnings to the game. If the Vault or wherever else our character starts is on the opposite side of the bay from SF, approaching it from the north through the Golden Gate Bridge could intentionally be a very different experience from approaching it from the South.

IMO San Francisco would be too boring because it'd be too developed by the time of FNV, as they're entirely controlled by the Shi. It'd be a post-post apocalyptic scenario where it'd have to be in a different genre (maybe a sort of cyberpunk 2077 kind of game?). Unless they go full tv show and just nuke them too to make it a post apocalypse scenario again, or set it either before the events of fo2
25
u/soulsofjojy Mar 10 '26 edited Mar 10 '26
New Vegas already is borderline post-post apocalypse. I'd be very much down for a spinoff game, canon or not, that takes that even further and shows us a fully rebuilt society. One that's begun to advance technologically and culturally beyond just picking up what the old world left behind, for both good and ill.

Fallout doesn't have to just be a bunch of rusty scrap metal shacks filled with the intellectually infirm like Bethesda seems to think.
It'd be nice to have an actual civilization like we had in Fallout 2.
→ More replies (1)13
u/Lord_Fagdington Mar 10 '26
Yeah, that's why I said it'd have to be a different genre from the usual "explore the wasteland" all the other fallout games had. It would be really cool if there's a game set in San Fran, and after the events of FNV or the tv show, and the main questline is akin to cyberpunk 2077, where you have to overthrow the Shi or something. I would buy and 100% that game in a heartbeat

Current SLC resident, the Mormons and their secrets could be excellent dungeons. What would live on the Temple, or that secret vault in Little Cottonwood canyon. So many hospitals, an air force base, I-80 to park city. Plus knowing how the world was headed, they probably build a giant bunker under the hill the State Capitol in on

Honestly the Mormons are such doomsday day preppers they might have their own versions of vaults.
I live in SLC too and I can't think of another area that has a big city and as much nearby natural diversity as we do. For those who dont live here, SLC would look totally different than New Vegas.
Yetis and wild nuke snow storms in the Wasatch, weird Salt crab monsters from the salt lake. Miles of salt flats, red rocks deserts, high desert, the Uintas nearby.
Add to the nature with odd religious sects, a few huge airbases (they say Dugway is the real Area 51), doomsday preppers as mentioned above.

Exactly, they do already have a big vault in slc, plus the temple and convention center are so larger, it could probs house a couple thousand in dire situation! As for creature, small stuff getting just big enough. Not radroach, but foot long radiated centipedes, ants would be here still, they love the area. In big cottonwood canyon, the porcupines would adapt to have the spikes thanks the radiation. The could learn to fire them or just shed them, their bodies build immunity to the rad’s but they don’t ghoulify, yet some speak whispers of a larger glowing porcupine out there

I'm definitely hometown biased here, but I would love an Atlanta game. The downtown has a pretty extensive underground area where they just built over the burnt city in the late 1800s, it's the greenest big city in the United States (in terms of trees, grass, etc, would be a good location for them to make a game not set among dead trees), there's the airport that could be a major location, and it would be the perfect place for a Nuka-Cola global headquarters. Then there's good options to travel for DLCs, you can go to south to the swamps, east to the barrier islands on the coast, or north to the lower Appalachian mountains.

A setting based on the Great Lakes would be awesome. Metropolises with storied histories like Chicago and Detroit, there can be some creepy new age religious revival groups near Battle Creek, and we can fight Rad-mooses. There can be a faction of Quebecois rebels fighting to reclaim Canada and there's tons of indigenous folklore to explore
33
u/mrturner88 Mar 10 '26
For me, it’s always Detroit. Downtown Detroit has 3 casinos and 4 sports arenas. Museums for Science, Art, African American History (like the museums we find in FO3). A university (and several others in the metro area). Plenty of space for warring factions. There are also a lot of buildings that give us some verticality. You have suburban areas that give you that FO3 feel, but then you have other areas with huge mansions. Right outside of the urban sprawl, you have vast farmlands. There’s the Detroit River and on the other side is Canada, where there is another casino. Go down a little bit and there’s Lake Erie. You can blend elements of FO3 because of all the water around the state, that could lead to greater levels of irradiation. Which could equal more ghouls, almost making it like a Fallout zombie game. The upper peninsula and Lake Superior could be a dlc, focused around the dense forest, blending some elements of a Red Dead Redemption. Then you could blend elements of FNV with the gambling and casinos. Auto capital of the world so hopefully by that time, we can have working cars for transportation, opening the size of the map. Chicago and Lake Michigan could be another dlc, centered around mafia-like factions. The amusement park, Cedar Point, in Ohio isn’t far either and could be yet another dlc, similar to NukaWorld. All of this could be done in the snow so in hardcore or survival mode, you have to worry about the clothes you wear. So many opportunities.
16
u/aSpookyScarySkeleton Mar 10 '26
You would have to consider Detroit as it would be in the fallout universe.
Which would be even better, imagine the motor city in a world where it didn’t have a gutted period and continued to pump out those crazy nuclear vehicles and probably even had advanced robot manufacturing plants.
And the MUSIC omg, so many Motown and Motown adjacent hits to use.
Could really be some fallen utopia vibes in the post apocalypse. They could introduce vehicle travel and combat as a core and main mechanic too.

Seattle, cover all of Puget Sound, make huge map or DLC to add Portland & the Gorge. Another DLC could be Vancouver, BC or the Olympic Peninsula.

Should do the whole PNW, FO2 was a vas area in CA so do Seattle to Vancouver.
Then DLC1 - Portland "new Oregon trail" DLC2 - Return to Anchorage

Fallout: Los Angeles. With the pier, Downton full of ghouls, and have a player base in the Malibu hills 😂

I'm more interested to see what became of the central states. We've seen the coasts, time to see Minneapolis, Chicago, Detroit, or St. Louis, even New Orleans!
Heck, go even more off the beaten path of the continental regions, Honolulu or San Juan.
Maybe even delve into Canada with Toronto or Winnepeg.

Salt Lake: the effects of the nuclear apocalypse on the lake itself could turn it into a deadly horror area on par with the glowing sea, bandit factions like the white legs and 80s would be both fascinating and terrifying, and New Canaanites being a faction would be really cool.
The one downside though is that all of the famous stuff in the Salt Lake City area is really really far apart. If there was a Fallout: Salt Lake, I think the best way to handle it would be to have a fast travel system in the form of a motorbike.

Northeast also isn't THAT culturally distinct. We need a Southern Fallout.

Seattle has Boeing/huge industrial aerospace industry, Space Needle, hidden underground city, crazy shipping/docs infrastructure, tons of tunnels, dreary weather, Cryptozoology myths, extreme hills/streets, wild blackberries everywhere, tons of local native American culture... it would be an amazing setting.
