8k for a 6 hour flight doesn’t sound like a good way to spend your money to me
526
u/Chowder1054 Apr 15 '26
I would do it for a long international flight.
But for 6 hours? It’s just a waste of money

I got upgraded on a flight from Australia back to the US
Holy shit that was fantastic, but I would of never actually paid the cost of it out of my pocket

You would spend $8k for a 10 hour flight but consider it a waste of money for a 6 hour flight?

u/hughesy1 Apr 15 '26
I am going to do it for a 14 hour flight from East US to Japan. I'm a bigger guy and have a horrible time in the normal seats, 14 hours is like torture. Absolutely worth it just to not have a day or two of my vacation eaten by recovery.

u/Fl_Funky_Jam Apr 15 '26
I did that trip about a decade ago. Miami -> JFK -> Shanghai -> Okinawa. I legit had knee issues the first day or two from being so cramped in my seat. Fellas, 6'3 ain't all its cracked up to be.

Yeah, but for a longer international flight the cost will go up substantially. I flew from LA to Singapore last summer (16 hour flight I think), and these pod seats were something like $25k - $30k on United airlines I believe. For reference, I got the upgraded Premium Plus seats, and it was only like $400 more than the standard economy seats. Money well spent for those seats, but if have to take out a loan to get the pod upgraded seating.

It's often company money. I travel a lot for work. I have also never paid for Delta One, because with status I get upgrade certificates, more miles, and same-day upgrades at the gate.
That being said, work travel sucks balls. Nicer seats take the edge off of the grind.

I know of companies that will book business class tickets for any flight longer than 6 hours. This applies to anyone, regardless of their position.

u/tawishma Apr 15 '26
Tbf most people that take flights for this amount of money aren’t doing it on their own dime, it’s usually a business expense, coming out of family trust, or just simply an upgrade for points.

Not going to lie, if I was rich and flying >6hours, I'd consider paying 2k, maybe even 3k for a round trip like this. My flights to/from London from the US were... Painful. (and I'm seeing round trips between Detroit and London at 3k for first class. 2k for business.

I tried, but failed using an usb-c to HDMI connector. I just wouldn’t seem to work. Maybe on a tv it might, I tried on a monitor at work.

u/WillowUPS Apr 15 '26
I have one of the little 3rd party docks for my Switch 1, which functions as a full dock without the bulk, separate USB C power cable and HDMI sockets. Works a treat while travelling. I'll give it a shot on my next long haul flight.

Not sure how to add to the post but the setup was via a laptop plugged into HDMI on ANA the room business class.
I'm very lucky to be able to do this and it was my first time flying business for our honeymoon. The watch is a £120 citizen bullhead not a Richard Mille or anything crazy.
I understand how fortunate I am to do this, sorry to kill everyone's hatred but I'm not some billionaire I'm just a guy that saved hard and values travelling.

I work with these systems, and the screen connection is isolated, at least on the systems I work with, maybe Thai has a different system that actually lets you connect external sources.

I have been in business class before (almost 15 years ago now 😮💨) but they didn’t have accessible inputs for the displays, that’s insane!
So obviously something is running it, offscreen. I’d be very curious how one changes the inputs on the menu of the display, I can’t imagine the airline offers it on purpose, lol, at least not for free. Be careful, they’ll start offering “HDMI+” subscriptions to let you do it.
