All it took for the entire world to come out against him was for him to criticise ballet.

Eh, he's been sowing the seeds over the past few months. That was just a cherry on top.

Bes8des being extremely cocky, self important, and entitled, he called childfree peoples existences sad and that the point to life is to breed. (Misogynistic and right wing talking point, neat!)

He was at a concert on an elevated platform casually flicking cigarette ash onto the plebs beneath him. (Rude entitled selfish rich person behaviour.)

He was in the epstein files, because someone in there said he secretly supports woody allan and regrets that he had to donate his paycheck from the film they worked on together in order for a chance at the Oscar that year. (Fake woke, doesnt care about woody allans issues).

Constantly hangs out, admires, supports, works with abusive men. Plus his gf is a kardashian. Who you spend your time with says everything you need to know about a person.

Everything else he has "done" is just constant foot in mouth syndrome. He says distasteful things that paint him as incredibly entitled and unlikable.

The reason its a big deal is because of how he presented himself just a few years ago as a soulful sensitive artist. Big fall from where he was.

u/DazzlingCapital5230 it’s a bit dystopian but also kinda fun Mar 07 '26

Also people noticed that he was clearly referencing a Seth Rogen interview when he went on his thing about being childfree! At some point, when you keep saying/doing rude, thoughtless things, you might just be rude and thoughtless.

202

u/Troumbomb Mar 07 '26

As in he was talking about Seth Rogan being child free or?

Timothée relayed a story to Vogue about watching a celebrity interview with a friend.

According to Timothee, the celebrity bragged about having so much free time to do other stuff because they didn’t have kids. He and his friend that he was watching with turned to each other “like holy shit. Oh my God. Bleak.”

People have pieced together that the celebrity interview where the person talks about being able to do other stuff due to not having kids is Seth Rogen. (Seth Rogen said something to this effect a couple years ago in an interview.)

I’ll also share anecdotally that a friend of mine did a theatre production with Timothee Chalamet and he said Timothee would refuse to participate in fight calls and generally wouldn’t follow fight choreo protocol so he almost choked out his scene partner once. That was years before he became a big name.

I never knew he was this insufferable, thanks for sharing. He's geniunely such a loser that I cant understand why people fawn all over him

373

u/ForkAKnife Mar 07 '26

He was an indie darling and cute which sustained his likability until he started sharing his opinions.

It’s not that he’s aging like DiCaprio as much as he’s chosen to swallow his foot and act like an ass.

Sarah Paulson mentioned on some kind of podcast or talk show or something running into timothee at a restaurant or something and he apparently without asking took a cookie off her plate and started eating it in front of her and apparently had a very "yeah I just took your cookie, in timothee chalamet, what are you gonna do about it?" Vibe as he ate it.

I knew it was all marketing because all his early social media shows he was just a talented frat boy. So many people projected a starving artist aesthetic to him and I was always mystified because nothing he was doing then justified it. I think it was / is willful blindness. Tbh I think it would still be there if it wasn’t for his girlfriend. Lot of the worst of his stans dropped him after that.

He has basically been acting like Marty Mauser irl. Many initially thought he was just Oscar campaigning but it’s becoming clearer that his performance felt so natural because that’s literally who he is irl

246

u/Hikesny Mar 07 '26 edited Mar 07 '26

I've always thought he was full of himself. I was a year ahead of him in nyc and knew some of his hs classmates and a couple weren't too fond of him either.

I was confused for a bit because I thought it was all a marketing act for the movie. Even the "I want to be one of the greats" speech he made I thought he was still screwing around promoting the movie and staying in character lol I guess not

It's rap but mentions dick, Arrakis and Mordor, I'll never listen to it again but I can't hate this.

75

u/Fluid-Cut Mar 07 '26

Apparently there was a joke (or conspiracy) that this UK rapper (whose name I have already forgotten despite just watching the video) and Timothee Chalamet were the same person. So Tim leans in and does some bars with the guy. And true to rap, Timothee’s verses are self mythologizing and grandiose, talking about dating a billionaire and having an Oscar, being young. I mean, at one point he says something about lean and you know this is a joke.

All of that said, I still think the guy is an asshole. But what the fuck do I know? I’m just a childless 41-year-old lady, so clearly I’m miserable.

in addition to everything the other commenters have said, lots of people also sideye timothee because he has praised/appears to be friends with shia labeouf who is notoriously an abusive asshole, among other things.

also in the recent epstein files drop, there’s an email timothee’s previous publicist sent to epstein claiming that the only reason timothee donated all of his earnings from his work on the woody allen movie ‘A Rainy Day in New York’ was because of the bad PR. apparently he felt he was forced by his team to give the money away. seemingly he didn’t actually care about the allegations against woody allen, only about his Oscar chances.

Proves love of ballet and opera remains strong.

665

u/Walking_the_dead Mar 07 '26

I think it hit a nerve bevause a lot of people wished they could enjoy ballet and opera and can't due to money/geographic constraints, etc only to see a motherfucker who grew up around the scene and have the means saying this shit.

225

u/GullibleBeautiful Mar 07 '26

Even still. I grew up extremely poor and rented taped copies of operas to watch from the library. I played clarinet in my school orchestra with funds scraped together out of nothing. The younger generations are interested, people are just writing them off because of the loud douchebaggy ones they see on social media.

53

u/Curiosities Mar 07 '26

Are you me? I played clarinet in school, wanted that instrument most, loved it, and had to fund my reeds. (whyyyy do they love to crack? ) My mom was already on disability and my parents divorced so we were super poor. Between PBS and the library, I got to see operas, musicals, borrow librettos to read and remember performances while sometimes getting the tapes to listen to/watch.

I grew up one of the many poor kids in NYC. I got to see my first Broadway musical as a birthday gift from an aunt when I was in my teens after always dreaming of seeing live musicals and loving them thanks to PBS/the library. I later got to go to the Met for operas while in college (cheap student ticket batches = amazing), and more theater, from indie weird plays to more Broadway with the discounts.

I don’t care about either, what hit my nerve - perhaps just as a millennial - is trashing anyone’s work at all. We’ve been getting robbed for decades to the point you’ll go bankrupt if you get *too sick; whatever you’re doing, you automatically have my respect**. My only hope is you’re getting some enjoyment out of it, be it an opera singer, bricklayer, nurse, waiter, I sincerely don’t give a shit. You do you, get that money before they snatch it away, and find balance in your life. I salute you.

*Except politicians, if not a couple others. There can be bad apples in anything, but generally speaking, I definitely don’t respect them.

**Seriously, fuck these corporate puppets.

I've never seen a ballet or an opera, so no opinion on them, I just think it's an extremely shitty move to make disparaging comments about one's collegues on a slightly different field. Regardless of one's job.
It would be just as tasteless if a highschool teacher dismissed kindergarten teachers.

59

u/scalectrix Mar 07 '26

Or vice versa, which is far more the case here (no diss to kindergarten teachers). Ballet and opera take a huge amount of training. Being a movie actor not so much. Frankly, most theatre actors are generally more highly trained (though obviously not mutually exclusive).

u/Chained_Wanderlust who deemed this meeting of the minds necessary? Mar 07 '26

What he did was hit the core foundation of every trained dancer- do they all specialize in ballet? Hell no, I didn’t- but will they all come to ballet’s defense since its so foundational? Definitely. Same with Opera, no opera is not everyone’s thing but is it respected by most musicians who understand how hard it is? Absolutely. He insulted the entire performing arts with his comments, not quite “14 cents” he thought he did.

47

u/Temporary-King3339 Mar 07 '26

The video celebrating opera was epic. So lush from beginning to end it made me wish I liked it better for the sheer spectacle of it. The costumes alone were amazing plus the power that the singers have is pretty epic as well.

81

u/firesticks a role model for the next Asian kid that wants to get railed Mar 07 '26

Yeah, I think this nails it.

It’s a bit of that oversaturation that often bites theatre kid style personalities. Like Anna Hathaway. We don’t see it as often for men but in this case he’s more legitimately been a dick and a brat than any of the women that get dragged.

There’s also an element of drinking his own kool aid, the arrogance of previous comments starts to establish a pattern.

Is great actor really a stretch? Put aside your bias, he's been nominated for the academy award for best actor 3 times before the age of 30. There isn't that many other people to achieve this.

I didn’t get the abject hate that he got because it felt like there just wasn’t anything behind it, before I guess Marty supreme and having a sex pest involved with that.

But this past week has really really really made me dislike him. I am confident that there’s no amount of money that would make me do something like this.

Chalamet worked with Woody Allen, and only due to backlash did he express regret and performatively announce he'd be donating his earnings from the film. If we're going to be splitting moral hairs, all of them are problematic, and will each get their day in the backlash sun one way or the other.

It's Timmy's turn now, let his haters bask in peace. When/if MBJ's turn comes, we'll let you bask. Cheers.

I'm assuming all this is someone else's oscar campaign tbh, which honestly makes it a bit less fun. I love dunking on celebrities but I hate being a tool for someone's weird beef. Like however dunk-worthy Chalamet is, anyone stirring drama as part of an awards campaign is even more dunk-worthy

I’ve heard he’s a diva and nightmare from people who’ve worked with him and that was over 4 years ago. He plays the Hollywood game of politics well. I really just thought the diva rumors were rumors or maybe someone had a bad experience. But that breakfast bit? Yeah… that is some diva asshole stuff right there.

177

u/Thexer0 Mar 07 '26

I read on here not too long ago that he yelled at someone on the set of the Bob Dylan movie because they were using their phone to take pictures of the 2024 eclipse. Apparently he was pissed about seeing an anachronism on the set of his period piece. It was just a reddit comment so who knows how true it is but the dude does seem like a guy that thinks acting is the best thing anyone could possibly contribute to society.

100

u/woke_pug Mar 07 '26

I know someone else who worked with him on that film and said he was a bit paranoid about paparazzi, but otherwise a perfectly fine and nice person. Not like a saint that'd give an unhoused person the shirt off his back, but definitely not a monster. So idk 🤷‍♀️.

Full quote, this guy was praising Timothee the whole podcast then the hosts asked him to say the worst thing about him.

"I said what are you cooking this morning, he said I do like 3 different things for Tim and he'll have one thing, and then Tim went hey man why don't you have the other two things and that became ideal(our deal)? so actually again it's a nice thing"

Maybe a hot take: More than anything — more than the glib statements, more than the alleged antics, even more than the Karjenner of it all— I think this backlash is the result of his being completely inescapable for the last two full years at least.

Apparently Denzel told MBJ that overexposure is what kills movie stars, and that seems spot on. Timmy needs to take a few years off post-Dune 3.

I hate when everyone turns on a celebrity and decides everything they're doing is morally bad. This current one is also extra irritating to me because of the bad faith interpretation of Chalamet's comment about opera and ballet. I think a lot of people are disrespecting their own intelligence pretending it was an insult towards opera and ballet and not an accurate assessment of their popularity in the culture.

This is so strange to me. I’ve worked on many film sets with A-list stars, I’ve worked on many successful TV shows and my dept works really close with actors and not once have I met a star who has a personal chef, everyone gets their food from Catering like the rest of the crew with maybe some special dietary requests. Is this a UK/International thing, because as I’ve seen in my 20yrs in the game this is not normal for American Hollywood film sets.
