In phylogenetics, it's impossible to evolve out of a clade (a group of animals of shared ancestry). All apes evolved from a common ancestor in the old world monkeys, so if old world monkeys are monkeys, and new world monkeys are monkeys, apes are also monkeys.
Monkeys and Apes are all primates bit our last shared ancestor was around 15 million years ago and we are now quite distinct from eachother genetically.
Tails are the most obvious physical difference since most monkey species have them while none of the apes do, but there’s also significant differences in intelligence and pelvis shape and thus posture as a whole

Son Wukong isn't limited to Journey to the West tho. He has had so many iterations in so many stories that Dragonball might as well be one of those stories.

Not full thing - you can get some fragments; and there were subtitles to the official film; but no official full books. I heard someone somewhere on the internet made their own unofficial translations. It’d probably be too much effort to publish - it is surreal and uses a quite unique language, with puns, wordplays and jokes that would be difficult to translate, and it’d still probably be pretty niche publication and not sell much copies…
In before half the replies confidently drop Donkey Kong, Caesar, and Winston right before the taxonomy nerds sprint in to scream that apes aren't monkeys because they don't have tails

Would it be super pedantry to point out only one of those is a monkey? Abu is the only one with a tail and the other 3 would therefore be Apes.
What you'd want to say is "Favourite Primate"
