Not too many that serve traditional Finnish food as such, many ala carte resturants do serve some traditional Finnish foods such as salmon soup. 1h+k is right in the city center and has some dishes made from local fish. Fröj and strampen also serve some typical Finnish dishes but again mostly European kitchen style food.

Ironically if you want to eat Vaasas speciality kebab shops typically serve dill macaroni salad.

Dill macaroni salad sound so perverse that I might enjoy it. If I'm ever in Vaasa, what kebab shop would you recommend?

I personally enjoy La Bella but pikku Quattro and Wanha Mestari are also good. Unfortunately my favourite one Lindas closed down during covid but they were absolutely amazing.

The Dill Macaroni is for me an essential part of the Kebab shop experience, I was stunned when I found out it was only a Vaasa thing. They usually don't charge for it and it's part of the salad buffet that's included in the meal price

I'll chime in with Food Point and La Strada. Good kebab rolls.

Not traditional but 1H+K and Hejm deliver some of the best nordic fine cuisine Finland has to offer and for two years in a row EIJN has delivered the best dish of the year (not finnish per se). E: also Fröj.

and this is coming from someone living in helsinki and who works with restaurants daily.

Absolutely. Great restaurant. It is finlandssvenska, but all the best restaurants in Vaasa are from finlandssvenska. Finnish-speaking people mainly maintain chain restaurants there. Like Amarillo. Best restaurants there are maintained by Swedish-speaking people. Strampen will serve great Nordic cuisine. Looking at their current menu, fish platter and lamb tenderloin or pan-fried arctic char sound very nice Nordic dishes.

Finland doesnt have "traditional Finnish food" restaurants. You wont find makaroonilaatikko, or kermaperunat, or sisnkinmakkarakeitto etc in a restaurant. Theres ala cante, random china buffets or fast foods. If you really want traditional foods, I suggest some bigger Prisma warm food desk They sell traditional foods too.

There are plenty of traditional Finnish food restaurants in Finland, what are you talking about?

Not the same as most of central Europe has. Its mostly fancy ala cante and I dare you to find a restaurant that serves what I listed. Its lohikeitto and porokäristys mostly, if even.

I‘m aware that the majority of restaurants don’t serve traditional food, but i thought I would ask if someone has a secret tip. We had lounas in a very small cafe the last day and they had some things we dont know from germany.

Bank or Fondis.

Both above average restaurants with nice atmosphere.
