Lapland in November / December

Hey! So I am visiting Rovaniemi for a few days (27 Nov - 01 Dec). The plan is to hunt the northern lights, to walk around the forests, expierience the sauna and refresh in the Kemijoki River.

I am wondering if buying snow boots is necessary.

I have my mountain boots and wool socks that I used in Helsinki in January (-18 Celsius). I was walking in the forests and by frozen lakes for a few hours and it was ok like that for the most of the time.

As I read the northern lights hunt might take up to 10 hours so should I buy some snow boots?

What other important things should I know before the trip?

Please Critique this November trip (please be kind). Oslo, Tromsø, Lofoten, and Inari, Finland.
Other than spending time with my family, I love to wander and go to woodfired saunas on water so I can cold/ice water swim or plunge. A dream would be to swim under the northern lights. I’m not sure how many solo trips I have left in me and so I do want to explore different places in this 12 night trip. I also love to eat and go to bakeries.

Lapland in Dec/Jan

Hello everyone,

Here’s our plan for a 1-month trip.

Route

  • Travemünde (Germany) → Helsinki: ferry
  • Helsinki → Rovaniemi: VR train
  • Explore the area and Ski at 1 or 2 ski resorts (Levi, Ruka, or Saariselkä)
  • Ski resort (TBD) → Narvik (Norway)
  • Narvik → Lofoten
  • Lofoten → Rovaniemi
  • Rovaniemi → Germany: train and ferry back

We want to bring our dog, drive our car, ski equipment, winter gear, and food.

Our car needs new tires anyway, so we’re planning to get 3PMSF-rated tires, plus snow chains. We used to live in Canada, so we’re used to some snowstorm/blizzard driving in eastern Canada. A few years ago, we also drove around Tromso and the Abisko area in November.

Last year in the Dolomites, our diesel Volkswagen Passat (FWD) froze up 3-4 times. The mechanic said we likely had non-winter fuel before heading deep into the Alps. But even after refilling an almost empty tank, the engine froze up again.

I’ve read on forums that it’s best to arrive with a nearly empty tank and fill up in Rovaniemi. With the Arctic temperatures, the engine could freeze again and again. The rentals in Lapland are so expensive for the number of days we need.

Is it even worth bringing our car? Another option I researched is renting a newer model 4WD petrol car in Germany and driving that over (same plan as above), but they won't have the 3PMSF-rated tires in most cases. What would be the best option here?

First-timer Helsinki/Lapland Christmas Trip

Hello, traveling to Helsinki and Lapland over Christmas this year with a family of 4 including 2 kids aged 6 and 9. Looking for recommendations and tips to make the trip as enjoyable and easy as possible.

Helsinki:
- Just spending one night here before catching the overnight Santa Claus express to Rovaniemi. If I could only see or do one thing in the city, what would you recommend?

Train:
- First time long distance train journey with the kids. Got 2 private cabins with bathrooms. Any tips to navigating the train journey is much appreciated.

Rovaniemi:
- Spending 3 nights here over Christmas. Picking up a rental car for convenience. How easy is driving? Are the roads cleared regularly and any recommendations for safe driving there?
- I’ve heard it gets crazy here during Christmas, any tips/tricks to manage the crowds and have the best experience?
- Planning to do reindeer sleigh rides, husky rides, Santa Claus village, Snowman park, etc. Anything else you would recommend?

Levi:
- Spending 2 nights here. Planning to stop by the Snowhotel on the way there. Hopefully a Northern Lights Snowmobile safari. Anything that’s preferable to do in Levi over Rovaniemi?

Other:
- How much daylight should I expect and should I be planning around that?
- I know it’s hard to predict but hoping to see northern lights. What are the chances and any recommendations for capturing pictures of them?

I’m hoping this is a once-in-a-lifetime trip for the family and the kids while they still believe in Santa. Hoping you guys can give me some insights to make that happen. Thanks and appreciate all of your time and thoughts!

What is Sisu?

From what I have read online, there is no way to directly translate it to English, and I've heard it's not the same thing as willpower or determination. Can someone explain the difference to me?

Travel on a budget in winter

Hello, my friend and I would love to visit Lapland this winter, but we don’t have a big budget, as we are students in Denmark.

Do you have any tips on how to go from Helsinki to Lapland and stay there with a low budget?

Thanks in advance for any information you could share with us. We really appreciate it!

Local Train trip recommendations!

I live in Tampere (5 years now), I'd like to get acquainted with more cities in Finland while I'm not busy travelling abroad. I love trains, and I unfortunately don't have a car, so I thought I could take train trips to different cities, maybe one every other week till December. Probably not staying overnight, I could sleep in the train since it will be dark and won't see much anyway.

Some background, you don't have to read all of it:

I'm quite familiar with the main Helsinki area, I've been to Porvoo, Suomenlinna, and in general, I think Helsinki is a great summer place. I looked at the theatre and opera programs but nothing caught my eye, so probably Helsinki is off the table.

I've also seen most of Turku, only the islands left and that I'll do maybe next summer.

I also like Hämeenlinna a lot, I might actually go again, I like walking in Aulanko. Recommendations for what else to see there are welcome!

I liked the art scene in Oulu, I loved that they had a quilting exhibition, and a bug-related one that used carousel projectors and crafts with different materials.

I love sitting at lakes and reading/grilling/drinking, old buildings, books, craft beer, wines, game meat, everything rye, savory pies, cute cafes, antique/vintage stores, I collect cassettes and CDs. I'm also interested in local histories and crafts. I would love to go to all the famous nature spots, but I think that's difficult to plan for only one day and without a car, so focusing mostly on beauty that is accessible via public transport and legs.

TLDR: Which cities should I take a day trip by train to in the next 2 months? And what should I check out in them?

Couples lapland trip

Hi I am looking to plan a cozy couple trip 25F and 24M around december-january this year. I’ve never been in snow coming from a warm climate so i want to choose somewhere that’s like a winter wonderland with things like sauna, cozy cafes, little bit of shopping, northern lights, etc. Somewhere where it’s nice to just relax in a cabin but also has some nice activities to do. I’ve never been skiing so not sure if i care about it. I was researching lapland finland. Which city would be best to stay for a couple wanting a relaxed vacation but also do some fun things? I really would like to do the husky sled and see reindeer. Ive also always wanted to go to norway or iceland so im thinking they could also be an option. Can someone help me decide between these places? Any recommended cities/towns for a cozy winter getaway?

First-timer Need some guidance for trip to Rovaniemi in JAN 2027

Hello Mates,

I have my tickets booked for Rovaniemi from 8th Jan 2027 to 11th Jan 2027. I will reach Rovaniemi airport around 11:30 AM in the morning. And my departure is on 11th is at 10 AM in the morning.

I am excited for Aurora Lights and I am aware of the fact that one cannot predict if it will show or not on the day one want :XD, but coming with full hopes, let's see.

I was doing some research regarding areas to book for accommodation under £500 for 3 nights, and about activities and transportation. Came to know that transportation is very sparse. As a solo traveller, I just wanted to have some tips from you guys. Please forgive me if my questions sound dumb, but I just want to gather information and then proceed.

Any kind of help will be really very appreciated. Any tips/tricks are welcomed.

PS: Regarding the temperature, I was reading it will be around -30 at that time, so will pack accordingly.

Thanks in advance!

Inari to Ivalo airport by bus - schedule question

I am travelling from Holiday Village Inari to Ivalo Airport in late February to get a plane to Helsinki. The flight departs at 09.15 AM. The bus from Holiday Village Inari -> Ivalo Airport will, according to the Matkahuolto website, arrive at Ivalo Airport at 07:50 AM (departs at 06:45).

That's around 1 hour and 25 minutes to do baggage drop and security. Is that enough time?
