Jett Luchanko's first pro goal!
I know everything about the Flyers is depressing right now, but at least there's this. Jett has 6 points now (1 G, 5 A) through the first 5 Phantoms games.

I haven't wanted someone to succeed as bad as I do Luchanko in a very long time. Let's fucking go Jett.

u/EasilyEnabled 1d ago
5 goals? In one hockey game? The organization better sit the Phantoms’ coach down and tell him to play his 4th line more and just try to force OT. I mean, who wants to see a team you root for score 5 goals, right?
10
u/JonvonNeumann 20h ago
Last year they made a big deal of having the AHL team play a similar style to the NHL team so the players can be ready when they are called up. This is such an unserious organization...the players down there clearly don't know how to play tockey
1
u/Feeling_Interaction8 23h ago
Don't worry, they still lose, sometimes in OT after blowing 2 goal leads in the third.

I mean that’s a fine looking shot! Dude needs to shoot more

u/mucinexmonster 22h ago
The Flyers as an organization need to shoot more. They do not prioritize shooting, drafting shooters, or planning around shooting. They have, for maybe 25 years now at least, prioritized scrums around the net. And when it comes to the draft, if you have a +wrist shot, they don't want you. They avoid that skill hardddddddd.

also please don’t even think about calling him up until rick gets canned for the love of fucking god

Anyone who's followed Luchanko closely knows how whacked his last couple of seasons have been with the lingering core injuries and trades and position moves and missing camps etc. No excuse, just context. Good thing is, after surgery and recovery this summer, he said he's fully healthy and ready to go. So far he looked good in the Flyers preseason games (centered the best line with Knuble) and is over a PPG in the AHL after 5 games. Good start. If he stays healthy this season we should finally get a legit look at what he is and could be.
18
u/5988 1d ago
So many people insisted he was definitely a bust and yet here he is doing quite well.
The concerns about his lack of shooting were valid but too many people were insisting he's definitely a bust and only has a chance of being a 4C if he even makes it. He obviously isn't totally in the clear until he gets fair opportunity and proves it in the NHL but all of the ability he has been showing lately has always been there if you bothered to look at more than just the box score of his OHL games.

u/Prestigious-Set9303 20h ago
He’s always been projected as a middle six player. The problem is that many fans think every first round player is supposed to be a superstar. The truth is closer to every 4th line has a 1st round pick on it.
0
u/pauerplay 16h ago
I don’t think every first round player is a superstar but when you pass on a D that drops to you who was projected to go much higher while simultaneously stretching for a reach pick, it kind of sours the selection.
I’d have rather them taken Buium (who we also needed) and attempting to trade up to get a later first for Luchanko if they wanted him so badly. It’s not JUST the pick for him, it was what they missed by doing it when they did.
6
u/5988 10h ago
Vancouver fans are not happy and doubtful of Buiums play right now… I’m not saying he’s a bust but stop pretending he is a genius slam dunk pick because he’s favored by Twitter scouts. He is a risky profile and fell for a reason.
Jett was a late riser, late risers happen every draft. Not everyone wants to pick them but the flyers made an understandable bet on him considering he was also very young for the draft on top of it.
3
u/Sabunn 6h ago
The way people talk about Buium you would think he is already a star. Kinda insane to me
1
u/pauerplay 34m ago
A star? No, but he’s in the 2nd season of his time in the NHL as a defenseman when Luchanko isn’t cracking it as a forward…kinda insane to me how you don’t see that.
1
u/KoozDoingBetter 7h ago
Yea, looks like they didn't like Buium for whatever reason, and after his initial jump to the league, he's very much come back to earth, so it's possible in the long run passing on him will look smart. They did trade back before taking Jett, and I agree it would have been ideal if they could have moved further back based on Jetts projected draft slot, but they either couldn't find a partner or weren't confident he would still be available at wherever they could have moved back to. Oh well, we're gonna have to play the hand we were dealt.
0
u/Prestigious-Set9303 10h ago
This is all trickle down failure. If they don’t bungle the ‘name we don’t speak’ and trade him for Drysdale, then they don’t draft at a need (center) over best player available a defenseman.
2
u/pauerplay 10h ago
Having Gauthier shouldn't change the BPA strategy in anyway because he isn't a C or a D. I'd have still taken Michkov and Martone
1
u/Prestigious-Set9303 9h ago
Michkov/Martone were the proper picks. What I’m saying is that by trading an elite scorer for a dman (they’d never win a scorer for scorer deal) they chose to NOT draft Buium and instead select a reach at center in Luchanko.
And, I think Luchanko will be a fine pro…I’m just not sure he’s a relevant Flyer until they address the skill at C.

It took 22 games to record his first goal between NHL and AHL. He had no offense last year anywhere. Its fair to say the expectations of him ever turning out to be top 6 are gone, and on a team riddled with “glue guys and culture”, we’re looking for skill. Theres already a log jam at where he’d fit up here. Theres no fair opportunity left.

u/KoozDoingBetter 7h ago

He's not even old enough to drink a beer.
Theres already a log jam at where he’d fit up here.
It'd be very easy to make room for him if his play forces the team to.

u/Milksteak3919 6h ago
Nothing about any part of his journey shows thats going to change. Choosing to be ignorant isnt a solid reason to think there will be a sudden change.
Like it was very easy to move alex bump, who has had better metrics at every stage (and currently). Wait a sec, that didnt pan out either, because it wasnt easy. Nobodys clamoring over bottom 6 nobodies.
1
u/KoozDoingBetter 3h ago
Hopeful=/=ignorant. The reports about his core injury hopefully finally being healed and the chemistry he's shown with Knuble are positive indicators. Who cares about a sudden change - we need him to be good over the long term.
Like it was very easy to move alex bump
Bump WAS moved, and easily. He's waiver exempt and is in the minors so he can develop further and get additional ice time. You're not making any sense.

Dvorak? The guy leading the Flyers in points ? You’d put the scoreless NHL rookie in over him. Ok. We will
Never agree on Jett haha 😆4
u/5988 1d ago
yep!
ofc Im talking about his play beyond just this goal. He has been consistently impactful in his phantoms games so far.

u/Limp_Bar6899 1d ago
I really really hope so. After the draft I was very invested in watching him play and was very underwhelmed. Seems like a Scott
Laughton 2.0 and that just doesn’t excite me1
u/5988 23h ago edited 23h ago
I think there are some similarities between the two but I think Luchanko has some higher end plus attributes that Laughton doesn't have. He shows playmaking ability with smart high end passing. His physical speed and the speed he plays at will be really fun to watch if we can match him with linemates that compliment him. If you watched preseason, maybe you noticed how well he and Knuble were playing off of each other, with so limited time to develop chemistry. I hope he and Michkov bounce off of each other well, they could potentially complement each other really well.
Luchankos biggest flaw is the tendency to differ too much on shooting opportunities, but it seems he's really working on it and making progress. Tonight was the first goal, but he has had a few close calls in previous games and has been racking up fair SOG attempts in those games. Snowden seems to be coaching him well and he's in turn making the effort.

i swear ive seen jett smile like 6 times since draft day and even this celly on his first pro goal is just a quick fist pump and its right back to business. you can see it when he turns away and starts skating to the dap line. thats a level of stoicism i'll never achieve because i have poor decision making skills and worse anger management but we should all be more like jett lol

Or, do they & I’m just missing them?

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it here: all this guy has to do is win faceoffs and setup MM and Martone while he centers a line with them. I genuinely believe he’s the guy for the job
-4
u/RadkoGouda 22h ago
You cant have a 30-45 pt guy, like hes projected to be, as the 1C no matter how much you think their games align.
Hes not going to be anywhere near good enough to play that role.
2
u/WooderFountain 8h ago
You obviously have no clue what Luchanko has been through the last couple years. You're basing YOUR projection on production that was severely hampered by injuries and other real, actual factors.
1
u/KoozDoingBetter 7h ago
It's like this guy doesn't realize it's literally impossible to outplay your projection. Once you've had your 20th birthday, your fate is sealed.
1
u/bcarey34 20h ago
He works be a 60-70 pt guy between the two of them though. But I am fully getting behind him
Being the guy for that super specific job and line.

You don’t need this kid to be a 50 goal scoring 1C. You need him to be a 50+ assist 1C that is good defensively and dishes the puck to Martone and Mich. he needs to be the backstrom of this franchise. We watched backstrom play sound hockey for years and dish to ovi, that’s what you need Jett to do. Yes it’ll be great if he continues to chip in goals, but his vision, skating, passing and IQ is what mich and Martone need on their line.

Martone and michkov are both waiver exempt. I say when the flyers are eliminated from playoff contention (around mid January) send them to the phantoms and load up for a championship!
1
u/jgruntz1974 17h ago
The best thing for Luchanko is to leave him in the AHL for the year. Let him play a full season uninterrupted without a call up and just let him focus on offense. His first pro goal is exactly the kind of thing you want to see from him - getting the puck and firing it immediately without looking to pass to someone else. He's off to a strong start. Let him continue to build off that.
1
u/bigcracker Plan Brière 17h ago
Luchanko is looking really good with the Phantoms. I really think he is going to prove a lot of people wrong because I think he is going to be a very capable NHLer.

1
u/BigHead1012 9h ago
Man I’m praying I was wrong about Luchanko. If he can become a viable center for Flyers, it would be a huge plus for this organization
1
u/Alarmed-Low795 8h ago
Were the Flyers against him getting core surgery last season? It would be par for the course. He’s definitely looked better in the NHL preseason and AHL than he did in the OHL and WJC last year

I am so tempted to talk about the two dudes drafted after him, but I should probably not jinx it...
1
u/BrokeBum19 23h ago
We should probably relax about Helenius being some stud until he actually becomes a top half NHLer. He has 7 pts in 20 NHL games and 4 of the points were in one game. In his 16 career regular season games he has scored points in just 2 of them.
3
u/Due-Mulberry3600 23h ago
That's actually the point I wanted to make... both he and Buium may have been vastly overrated.
3
u/Sabunn 23h ago
Well yeah people are dumb. Its what you get when you judge prospects like development is 1-1 in every single situation. People are way too quick to give up on guys and even faster to declare draft picks a success. Just what you get when the majority of the hockey world are starting to watch hockey through spreadsheets and charts instead of trying to understand there is nuance in every situation.
I have never been high on Buium, but its pretty hard to judge a guy that started on one of the best teams in the NHL getting sheltered minutes to get traded mid season in your rookie year to one of the worst teams in the NHL and getting thrown to the wolves.
It's really asking a lot for a 19/20 year old. If he came out and looked great after all of that he might just be the next Norris trophy winning defensemen.
-1
u/Worldpeacee007 16h ago edited 16h ago
still would go at least 10 picks ahead of jett in a redraft. just the unfortunate truth
7 points in 20 games as a 20 year old in the league while the guy picked in front of you has zero and is playing in the ahl
jett failed to be a point per game in his 19 year old season in the ohl on one of the best teams in the league. he wasn't even the 1c on his ohl team playing kids much younger.
we can all get excited about this highlight and how hes gotten some assists for the phantoms, but we shouldn't get carried away.
rooting for him though. I love his skating ability
0
u/Sabunn 6h ago
The problem with any argument like this is we just ignore any nuance and decide your ppg totals in juniors makes you a good prospect or has any real influence on if you are going to make it in the NHL.
Not every situation is 1-1. If anyone is to blame for his season last year its the Flyers fucking with his development. Had him make the team when he should not have, instead of letting him prepare for the season properly. Then he gets traded to a new system and a team with major expectations compared to Guelph who were not very good. Then he goes to world juniors and hardly plays instead of being able to build chemistry and get used to his new team. On top of that he was playing with multiple injuries towards the end of last year. (obviously him playing at the world juniors was his decision but looking back it was definitely the wrong one)
They spent way too much time moving him around instead of letting him get comfortable anywhere.
0
u/Worldpeacee007 4h ago
nah man.
if you actually read my response, I dont simply discuss his ppg game totals...
the guy was benched for team canada.
he self admittedly struggled last year and is behind schedule in terms of his development.
People in the organization have said to be concerned about him.
hes had a nice start in Lehigh but the irony of your lack of ability to understand nuance is striking
1
u/Due-Mulberry3600 3h ago
How much of his struggles do you think has had to do with his core injury that finally required surgery after trying to play through it for 1.5 years? He looks like a different player this pre-season moving forward... from what I've seen.

1
u/chloethedoc 11h ago
While Luchanko's first pro goal is a nice highlight, his 1 goal in 5 games isn't enough to distract from the Flyers' team struggles this season.
