Thoughts from tonight's 3-1 .... Win?!?

- Michkov and Martone. Boy was that nice to see. First bit of life all season for this team and it's because of them.

- Vladar looks like last year Vladar after the 1st start vs PIT. Also nice to see.

- PP actually looked competent tonight. Provided the GWG!

- not to be negative but Bunting STILL played more than Martone and Michkov lol. Unfathomable.

- low-key don't mind Jiricek man. He has some wtf moments, but he moves it well, big shot, looks natural on the PP. Even threw a good hit!

- Nice to get a W. Nice to hear the crowd into it.

- point still stands. Fire Tocchet.

Tocchet played Michkov less than 2:50 in entire last period …..that’s fucking unacceptable. Michkov gives him a W finally and that’s how he rewards him

Tocchet still HAS to go. His line choices vs Detroit the other night were an absolute fireable offense, tonight doesn't change that.

His 3rd period management was atrocious, that's not how you win games.  He has no killer instincts

12

u/AirborneDJ 13h ago

Sure. Let's throw the fourth fine, which has gotten embarrassed all night and is made up of .5 of an actual NHLer, on the ice in a tie game with 5 minutes left. Genius. 🙄

u/hoobon 13h ago

It was still bad tonight. Michkov only had 14:29 on ice

So is he going to hold last offseason against him for the rest of the time he's here? Does he just not like Russians? What the hell is it?

10

u/Inner_Chain746 13h ago

It’s 💯 he doesn’t like Russian players, he has shown this with every team he has coached

Interesting

He doesn’t like players from outside Canada and the US.

Happy days! But to your point, idk how you explain this after the first 2 periods

17

u/TheSoundOfRaptors 13h ago

1st and 2nd star 14 and 13 minutes of ice time. Tocc needs to go!!

Yes. To all. Especially the last one. One win in ten games is not a good startm. If he doesn't change the amount of ice time for M&M after this, then he doesn't want to acknowledge that his scheme isn't working.

Amazing isn't it. The taco system was working, high danger shots, they get the lead and he goes away from it.

Tocchet still should be fired.

I like Barkey long term but same with him as bunting. I don’t see any world they are on the ice more than Michkov and Martone. I get protecting the lead and PK but they haven’t looked like plus defenders.

Hard to tell if Jiricek looks really good or Benoit looks so bad that he's prime Lidstrom in comparison. Probably a bit of both. I really like how he and Bonks games are coming along at the NHL level. Taliban Tocchet is still a terrorist though as always. Idc how well his systems and style matches the front offices vision even if they were good in theory he's so laughably incompetent at game management that it negates anything positive you could possibly conjure up about him as a coach.

Benoit is a terrible hockey player.

u/butchy_boyz 8h ago

Yeah, he was a dump in the trade, he's gone after the season.

Michkov saving Tocchet’s job feels ironic.

Toc = fun sponge I can't stand him

Mich has been fantastic, he needs more minutes. Marty is finding his game, he needs more minutes too

Tocchet got kalshi money on TOI for his own team or something man.

7

u/Aromatic-Attitude279 13h ago

All our skill players will underachieve their potential so long as Tocchet is headcoach. Zegras was the only real example of a skill player seemingly doing well under Tocchet, and he's really just gotten worse the longer he's played under Tocchet.

Foerster has been nothing short of awful.

Insane that he makes the same money as Suzuki, Jack Hughes and Clayton Keller

u/Blev088 It was Andrae all along 13h ago

I wonder how much that shoulder actually healed.  He doesn't look right and has been making fundamental mistakes and doesn't look as aggressive as I remember him being.

2

u/Totgemoon2021 11h ago

He actually can’t skate

5

u/Material_Director_49 13h ago

Yeah he is a slump. Contract is based on his potential m, of which he has tons of. He will break out of it.

5

u/The_Mauldalorian 09 Drysdale Truther 13h ago

He’s been awful but he’s earned the benefit of the doubt given how good he was before the bicep injury.

We always gotta have a cap albatross on the team

-1

u/butchy_boyz 8h ago

They have 1 more, no offense to Couturier is, TK and Dvorak (he might be already) will become albatross contracts.

1

u/Sabunn 0m ago

Lol they could trade TK for a kings ransom tomorrow if he waives his NMC.

The anti TK narrative is so weird.

Dvorak also easily traded the center market in the nhl is painfully thin.

u/larkhills #1 tippett hater 11h ago

im tired of giving players the benefit of the doubt just to watch them fail over n over

1

u/butchy_boyz 8h ago

His defensive play is fine, his shot isn't getting off. He's not on a line with a good offensive center either.

All that said, I never liked his contract, thought a bridge deal would've been better.

1

u/Philefromphilly 3h ago

Didn’t he take a pick to the hand? I’m sure he’s not gonna be right for some time, once he’s fully healthy I also have faith he’ll find his shot

1

u/tittsburghfeelers00 13h ago

Tyson has a cap hit of $3.75MM this year. The new contract kicks in next year, give him time.

0

u/Strong_Weird_9358 8h ago

It’s cuz I bought a Foerster jersey, blame me haha - But I still have faith he will find his game again. His SPCT is 5.3% - his shot is too good to keep up like that. He will start to find the back of the net.

0

u/Worldpeacee007 8h ago

do you really believe his shot is that good or is that just what youve just been told by other fans thus adopting that belief?

his shot is fine. I really dont think its particularly special. his fastest shot has topped around 80 mph this year post his shoulder exploding. who knows if it will every be the same

3

u/Strong_Weird_9358 7h ago

Sports medicine says it will be the same. The ligament is strong but fine motor skills take time to redevelop, it’s normal. He will work his way back. Have faith. He’s fighting it right now, but he’ll find his way.

3

u/El_Guadzilla 11h ago

Jiricek is going to keep having WTF for most of the year - the hope is that they reduce and he becomes a cromulent 5-on-5 Dman by next year. That and his shot will justify his roster spot - anything else is gravy.

Tocchet - ugh. His coaching system is very good for a team looking to match up against better talent, as we saw last year: low-event hockey reduces the disparity in talent. But it’s not the system that will make Martone and Michkov 80-100 point players. But i dont know that they will fire him 2 years into a 5 year contract.

He had said he was going to open up the offense this year - i am still hoping that once the team stabilizes, he will do that.

3

u/TheMightyCatatafish 8h ago

If anything, I feel like this gives the front office the chance to say “see? Tocchey works!”
Still hardly played out two young stars.

We’re not a serious franchise until he’s gone. And that’s honestly just the start.

5

u/The_Mauldalorian 09 Drysdale Truther 13h ago

Did Tocchet seem to not give a shit??? He immediately went into the tunnel and didn’t seem pleased.

4

u/Most-Iron6838 13h ago

He has money against the team. How else can you explain playing Bunting more than M & M?

2

u/Active_Gas_6488 13h ago

Team still sucks. Coach still sucks. Rebuild is still flawed and stuck.

2

u/Silencer_ 11h ago

If this is our season to tank you give Jiri big minutes. He definitely has PP1 potential but the big question remains if the rest of his game can catch up.

I dont necessarily mind Martone seeing under 14 minutes a game in his rookie season, I just don't. Sure Mcjesus got 18+ and Mckinnon got 17+, but 14 I think is an okay number for him right now. Michkov at under 17 a game is insane. INSANE.

Goaltending was as good as it has been almost every game this season.

Don't fire tocc yet, I don't want to pick 10th

2

u/Leto1974 11h ago

They skated well.

They attacked the Sens net as a unit .. not as much one and done.

The PP .... actually looked ok They threw pucks at the net and drove to the net

It was step 1.

2

u/dgood527 13h ago

I imagine the idea was that we actually have a lead so lets play for 2 way or defensive minded guys. He took it way too far of course, but thats probably the thought.

1

u/kakallas 13h ago

What was the idea against Detroit?

1

u/dgood527 12h ago

Couldnt tell ya. Im not defending it, just saying what i think his thought process was. Cool the hostility bro.

1

u/Blev088 It was Andrae all along 13h ago

1st unit power play looked good.  They need to move Jiricek up to the 1st unit.

The 4th line, Bunting, and Benoit just all need to be waived at this point.  Maybe go get Glendening back.

Maybe we hit the point where enough of the guys who were playing like dog water were out injured to win?

1

u/kflosw 13h ago

I just don’t understand the TOI situation… why isn’t he playing them?

1

u/ekgoalie34 10h ago

For a coach that seems to hate skilled players i am scratching my head as to why Z was on the ice in the final minute of a 6 on 5. He is horrible defensively lol. Almost an active attempt to sabotage and get the game tied

1

u/KorryBoston 2h ago

Watching it on tv? Jim Jackson is by far the best commentator. Ever. With that open net, he says, “Hallelujah!”

Best commentator. Ever.

1

u/WollyChaps 13h ago

Toccy Hokky fits the cadence of Chicken Jockey. That's the only contribution I can make, as right now that is the only thought I have.

u/Fx08 11h ago

Winning is fun but this was not a fun win. Almost would have preferred a loss to get rid of Tocchet quicker but I’m happy the kids got it done in the second before Tocchet limited their ice time in the third.
