New Rule : Please use the Search function before posting.

As this subreddit has grown over the past years, our regulars have noticed that similar questions get asked over and over again by people interested in the amazing variety of food available in the GTA. Today we're rolling out a new rule to try to reduce the number of repetitive posts that we've been seeing too often.

We're simply asking that posters use the subreddit search to see if their question may already be answered before they post asking for recommendations and reference their research if its not. We also ask that they include specificity like location, cuisine, etc in their request as the GTA is a huge area.

We wanted to announce this change widely so everyone is aware, and hopefully this will be a positive change for the subreddit. We're interested in feedback if you feel the rule has room for improvement.

Birthday cake for myself

I will be celebrating my bday alone this year and i want to get myself a cute small cake. Does anyone have suggestions in downtown for that?
I have vava near my home but i have never tried chiffon cake, so if anyone has any idea. I like mild fruity flavours with chocolatey notes, not very sweet

Hello. Any good recommendations on St Clair West between Bathurst and Dufferin? Preferably not Italian. I already tried Pura Vida, Albert’s, Queen of Persia. Any hidden gems? Thanks!

Ramen Tabetai - Late Night Ramen Flight $26 after 10PM Fri/Sat

Post image
76 Upvotes

Decided to try the Ramen Flight since I was downtown late last night.

Dishes:
1. Mazemen Tabetai: 7/10 (front)
2. Spicy Saito? 6.5/10 (left)
3. Non spicy Saito 6/10 (right)

Quality: Overall kind of disappointed with the dishes. Found them to be extremely salty with the non spicy Saito lacking flavour. It reminded me of a very light low salt pork broth without any complex flavours.

Favorite dish was the mazemen! I personally think it would have done better if you got the full size dish as the extra noodles would help offset the saltiness. They do provide a side of vinegar to help cut through! And the green onions help a lot.

Would probably try a full size portion before deciding whether I pass on this restaurant.

Best chocolate dessert

Hi Toronto, what's the best chocolate dessert you've had and crave from time to time? I'm craving a rich indulgent dessert and want to see what others love to eat. Bonus points if it's somewhere close to Etobicoke Lakeshore.

massive schnitzels where?

Used to frequent an amazing spot on far-east Lakeshore called Golden Pheasant, but see it closed down- shocking as it was always busy with lots of takeout and genuinely the very best such food I'd had anywhere maybe in the entire country. Dude knew his craft wholly. Those schnitzels were absolutely gargantuan, but besides that, tasted absolutely divine and texturally were perfect, all while being great value- truly rare combination.

So with that place unfortunately no longer around, I'm wondering, where are the dino-sized schnitzels for us big-backs with bottomless pits for guts?

I'm not asking for best schnitzels (tho if it happens to be that as well, by all means...), but schnitzel monsters. The bigger-than-your-mamas-head schnitzels you can either a) split between 2-3 adults, b) enjoy over the next 24-48 hours, c) gluttonize to the max, put it all down, play Russian roulette with yer arteries, hope for the best (the devil will be playing tricks on you, as you'll feel as if in heaven while scarfing it down).

Hit me.

Post Dinner Drinks

Taking my gf to Lucie for date night and hoping to find a place nearby with live music and lounging options for after dinner drinks.
Have looked at the lobby lounge at Shangri-La but wondering if anyone has additional recommendations that provide a romantic/intimate setting!

Thanks all!

Sit at the bar without reservations

Reading a recent post about Linny’s, I really want to try the chicken liver toast so I wondered if one could get a seat at the bar for just a cocktail and appetizer without a reservation. This was a thing back in the days that Linnys is harkening back to. After digging around on their website, I don’t think they offer this. So I wondered if there were other fancy restaurants that keep the bar or some seating first come first serve?

I heard years ago that Korean Grill House had a late owl special though I have never been late to take up on the promo. Is there a promotion like that now, somewhere, anywhere?!

Recommendation Request Need help — My Partner’s 30th Birthday!! Restaurant Recommendations

Hi everyone!!

I wanted to ask for recommendations for restaurants that accommodate group dining for 15 people. My boyfriend’s birthday is coming up within the next two months. It’s his 30th birthday and I really want to make his celebration special. I am planning to surprise him with a family lunch. I’ve been trying to look for restaurants, but it’s been rough :(

Some things Im looking for:
- preference is private group dining but semi-private space is also okay!
-Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Filipino, Thai, Vietnamese, or Italian restaurants are preferred (due to the preference of his family from what I know so far), but also open to considering steakhouses!
- Open to Mississauga / Toronto / North York areas, but not too far.
- Reasonably priced

Does anyone have any recommendations?? Your help is super appreciated!!

Had the chicken katsu box for $13.99 pre tax for a dine in lunch. It was actually the perfect size because their regular menu items are massive. Chicken was a bit thin but other than that a great lunch. What are your best cheap downtown lunches? This is in the Annex Bloor and Spadina. For the price and value I'll be back. Good, prompt service. Nice vibes inside. 12pm to 3pm

Korean bbq

Hi everyone! I’m looking for recommendations for the best Korean BBQ in the GTA! I’m willing to drive anywhere in the Greater Toronto Area for a really good spot. It can be all-you-can-eat or à la carte, as long as the food is worth the trip.
I’d love to hear your favourite spots, especially places you keep going back to. Bonus points for great-quality meat, good side dishes, and an overall great experience!
Thank you so much for your recommendations!

Right by Dufferin subway.

Not sure if the restaurant made a mistake and I was only supposed to get two tacos, but four for under $10 with complementary sides & sauces is an amazing deal!

I ordered from Ubereats since they had a BOGO promo there, but the shop is actually running the promotion off Uber too, so I'm gonna call them and order the BOGO directly next time.

$9.99 Jajang Udon with 4 banchan at Seor Ak San

Post image

Huge chunks of fatty pork in the jajang sauce. Very home cooked vibe and super substantial portion. Jeon as a banchan is appreciated, as is the slow jazz standards playing.

A contender for best value meal in Toronto for me. Also in the running are:

- most places a banh mi are under $5 (but especially the one with $3.50 takeout meals on Spadina)

- Nepalese buffet on Roncy

- handrolls at Maki Mart

-2 for $5 birria/barbacoa tacos at Venerica Meats

- Village on the Grange

Toronto Star An iconic Toronto peameal sandwich is hiding on one of downtown’s quietest streets

Post image
149 Upvotes

Despite being an iconic Toronto dish, the peameal bacon sandwich isn’t a ubiquitous menu item in the city.

That’s why Cabano’s owner Kevin Boyd added his version to the menu at the end of September.

Found on a brick-lined road overlooked by most Torontonians, Boyd’s version starts with five-and-a-half ounces of thick-cut peameal bacon seared in beef tallow.

It’s then topped with two tomato slices, American cheese and a choice of regular honey mustard or spicy honey mustard, all tucked into a soft pretzel bun.

Recommendation Request Any Bento Boxes?

I am wondering if Toronto has any good, affordable bento boxes for lunch that are similar to Taiwan train bentos or lunch bentoes in Japan. Ideally either Japanese owned or Taiwanese.

Help me build the best meal for a single dinner at Linnys

odd post, but I was able to swing it where I was 1) able to get some personal time and 2) line it up with a single seat rsvp at Linnys.

Help me! I want to make the most of this but am realistic about how much I can order/ eat as single dinner here. I can only over stuff so much. Help me build the ideal order for the night.

Only thing I know is, 1) i won't get this chance again in a while, 2) the pastrami is what got me really wanted to come here 3) the chicken liver toast seems like a must?

I Ate A Thing La Flota Takerias

Post image
29 Upvotes

I discovered this place via an Instagram ad and while that usually isn't enough to make me go I decided to take a chance. It might be my new favorite Mexican place in the city (slightly edging out Taqueria el pastorcito). The al pastor was especially good, it reminded me alot of my time in Mexico City - they actually use a proper trompo for it which probably makes a big difference. The prices were also great. The only real downside is if you live in the core and don't have a car, it's definitely a bit of a journey to get there.

Anyone know where to get a edamame milkshake/zunda milkshake in Toronto? Or edamame ice cream?

In Japan, supposedly a popular flavour of milkshake is made with edamame, and is also known as a zunda milkshake. Anyone know where to get one of these in Toronto? Or at least edamame ice cream? thanks
