Edward Bellamy once imagined that music on demand would be "the limit of human felicity." A modern apartment is full of things that once drew the same kind of awe.

Today’s version:

“A felicitousness: home, un-shadowed by prying ears and eyes, no invisible taste-makers’ insertions in our tongues and fingertips. Neither Roblox nor Prime Day. Dripless and unironic. Unbounded attention spans, human minds seeking musical and artistic achievement, social connection, maybe even some fucking semicolons.”

Boredom and creativity are siblings. I’m not trying to get all rose-tinted about people who had to draw by whale oil lantern light or compose around that one busted key on their clavichord or the much worse state of the many people who didn’t have lanterns or clavichords, but you have to wonder if they’d see how we live as utopian or dystopian. I think Wall-E got it right.
