Installation Help!

Hi I’m trying to install GIMP. Have a mac. M1 Pro. Sonoma 14.7.2 OS. I’m trying to download the most recent version of gimp (also tried older versions). The program will not launch.

I had GIMP before and it worked no problem. A recent message showing I couldn’t open a gimp file indicated that the version I had downloaded and used successfully before was not current enough, so I thought I would upgrade.

I download and drag the app into the apps folder like all Mac programs I’ve done before.

When I launch the program, it appears in the side bar and just bounces until it stops. No window opens. I asked the AI for help but I can’t get it working. HELP !!

Hi! Which version did you download? There's an install for Intel Macs and Apple Silicon Macs, and they only work on their specific architecture.

I tried both. Same problem.

On an M1 make sure you grabbed the Apple Silicon (arm64) dmg, not the Intel one. If it still bounces, try right-click > Open on GIMP in Applications once (macOS sometimes silently blocks the first launch), and if that doesn't do it, run this in Terminal and try again: xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/GIMP.app
